What reason would people be against hand sanitiser?

I’ve noticed now that there’s a parent of a child in my sons nursery who doesn’t let the teacher use sanitiser.

I also have another friend who refuses to use it when going into shops and won’t let her child wear it.

Does anyone know why you wouldn’t use it?

Diabetics get warned not to use it as it can screw up your blood glucose monitoring if you're using finger prick tests.

WhatHaveIFound · 16/07/2021 17:31

It's probably the alcohol. I'm allergic to it on my skin and my hands were red and bleeding at some points last year. Now I use Kindr sanitiser when i'm out and about and soap/water at home.

superblondie28 · 16/07/2021 18:29

I stopped using the stuff in the shop doorways a long time ago. It's very industrial. I had open cracks in my fingers and very sore hands around knuckles in winter. I used lashings of hand cream as recommended by pharmacy. I don't suffer from ezcema either. My hands only got better when I stopped using santizer and anti bac soaps 👐

pollylocketpickedapocket · 16/07/2021 18:30

@Skybluepinkgiraffe

I can't use it at all. Makes my hands so dry, red, cracked and very sore. Once a week at the supermarket, and I'm sore for most of the week. I'm so glad they've stopped insisting. DH had to do the weekly shop for a while.
They “insisted” with me and I said “no” Seriously, has everybody lost the ability to think for themselves?
RoseAddict · 16/07/2021 18:37

My daughter’s hands were so painful after the first week of using sanitizer and school it looked like she had severe sunburn. I also try and use soap and water

Elizabeth110100 · 16/07/2021 18:39

It flares up my eczema and causes me pain.

RubyGoat · 16/07/2021 20:22

It’s not the alcohol I’m allergic to, although it is extremely drying. Benzalkonium chloride, which is in a lot of them including one a PP linked to. I can’t use most eye drops or nasal sprays either. Annoying.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 16/07/2021 20:24

I get dyshidrotic eczema.

Honestly do people really care about this stuff. I have never used sanitiser and I've never had covid

Scottishgirl85 · 16/07/2021 20:36

Because it literally burns my skin off.... I will only use it if I am pretty much forced to.

What reason would people be against hand sanitiser?

This is exactly what I get. I had it before when I was a carer. It went away when I left. Came back a few months ago. I thought it was the gloves/sweat that brought it on but now I know it's the bloody anti-bac! I'm still trying to get rid of it now, and haven't used hand gel for a couple months now.
rainbowfairydust · 16/07/2021 20:45

Might be conserned about it altering their gut health..... If the kids eat after using it and it enters their stomach, I do worry about how it interacts with the good bacteria!
I use it, but alot less than when the pandemic first started. I would rather wash my hands now than keep using hand sanitizer but if we have been in a shop and touched items etc. Then we opt for hand sanitizer

XenoBitch · 16/07/2021 20:47

I use my own, and only when I have left the shop and am keen to get into a packet of crisps.
It is Covid theatre.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 16/07/2021 20:47

@SmokedPaprikaHotChilliPowder

Gosh it is so painful isn't it! I get it on my feet too...mini blisters Sad

The sanitiser would just mean I had outbreaks constantly

Yes DH and 2 of my DC get this too. It’s awful!
Siennabear · 16/07/2021 20:49

I don’t use it. I wash my hands often. Really don’t see the point. Surely you’re still breathing everywhere?

RobinPenguins · 16/07/2021 20:54

I’m amazed nurseries are using it! I don’t put it on DD, she’s too young and her skin too sensitive. They do frequent hand washing instead, but if they were using hand sanitizer on them I wouldn’t allow it.

Ifitquacks · 16/07/2021 20:55

Our nursery doesn’t use it and I’d be pissed off if they did. They wash their hands regularly with soap and water.

Bargebill19 · 16/07/2021 21:00

Some of them are not at all nice. Having seen the damaged caused to the plastic pump dispensers, desks and carpets, where they have dripped, I wouldn’t want them anywhere near my skin.

SinkGirl · 16/07/2021 21:02

@ohfook

I know someone who's kids have bad eczema. Since all of this started her kids hands are so painful looking and cracked. I wish she was against letting her kids use it!

Obviously I'm sure she's weighed up the pros and cons and she's decided it's better to use it, so I shouldn't judge.

When you next speak to your friend, please let her know about Gloves In A Bottle - I picked ours up from the chemist but have seen it online too, it’s been miraculous for this issue for my boys :)
igelkott2021 · 16/07/2021 21:12

I have never used it going into shops unless they stand next to me and force the issue (they do in the hairdressers even though you don't touch anything once there!), because there's no point. Hand sanitiser is generally antibac. Covid is a virus. It has been covid theatre from start to finish. Wash your hands. Use hand sanitiser only if you can't get access to a washbasin and soap.

Antibacterial ones are contributing to complete antibiotic resistance which will make Covid look like a walk In the park Exactly

actiongirl1978 · 16/07/2021 21:19

My DS won't use it. It makes him want to be sick, texture and smell.

I don't ever make him use it. He took his own soap into school which he pretended to use. He also hates touching soap!

This is exactly what was happening with my toddlers at nursery. Sanitiser plus excessive hand washing throughout the day. Had to have a word and send in own soap. No need to hand wash out with entering, before eating and after toilet.
Heatherjayne1972 · 17/07/2021 11:11

Lots of reasons

One colleague is allergic
another friend is convinced we will have a hand cancer epidemic in a few years as it’s full of carcinogenic chemicals ( it is)
Some people are wary of the alcohol content
Some people think it’s pointless / won’t be told what to do

Etc

WeHaveComeSoFar · 17/07/2021 11:33

A family member of mine won't use it because they have severe psoriasis on their hands.

aiwblam · 17/07/2021 11:34

I suppose because small kids do end up with their hands in their mouths and she doesn’t want her kid eating it.

My personal objection to hand sanitiser is twofold:

  1. at the entrance to Tesco/whatever they have a giant bottle of the stuff and you have to use your hand to press the pump. So every single person who enters Tesco touches this tiny pump. Filthy and weird that nobody thinks about this. Should be foot operated. I do understand that the sanitizer is “supposed” to kill whatever you touch on the pump, but IMO it’s safer not to touch it and once you’re in the supermarket, only touch what you’re buying.

  2. I’m ok with hand sanitizer that’s mainly alcohol but the stuff that’s alcohol free has all sorts of polymers in it. Wouldn’t want to risk ingesting that.
