We've booked 5 days away to York, we're in Scotland. The cases seem to be rising everywhere but looking at the covid postcode checker on the BBC York seems to be doing better compared to my local area. But im still having a wobble at going. I think its because we'll be on holiday so in and out of various different places rather than being up here but not going to perhaps 2 different restaurants /bars a day plus extra in-between lunch and dinner.

Plus the weather goes from amazing to rain the day we arrive and stays rubbish for the duration so we'll be spending money to be in the rain when we can do that at home for free!

Its our 1st trip anywhere since 2019 so I was really looking forward to it. Im just pretty nervous.

Funnily enough I live in York and we are off to Scotland next week for our holiday (should have been Singapore). City is busy but we are one of the top vaccinated places in the UK and it's all very safe. You will love it here.

elevenses75 · 16/07/2021 09:26

Scotland too, we go to Norwich in a week staying with family so need to be careful re crowded places just going to take it easy and enjoy visiting parents I’ve not seen since December 2019 my kids have grown so much they’ll hardly recognise them. My mum is cev but starting to relax now she’s double vaccinated. Hopefully you will get some good weather and have a lovely holiday, York is lovely.

littlepeas · 16/07/2021 09:27

Very comfortable. I don’t particularly like crowded places but not because of virus fear (just prefer quiet). We’re in Cornwall, staying just outside St Ives - St Ives is rammers and pretty awful, but it’s possible to find quiet spots. The biggest irritation is all the performative crap - masks, sanitiser, etc - and the lack of spontaneity.

lightand · 16/07/2021 09:33

I am bearing in mind that most things could be shut down again in say 4 weeks time. Shudder.
Dome most "normal" things now, except cinema. Cant bring myself to do that one.
I hesitated at indoor swimming, but felt ok.
I thought I would be ok with trains as had assumed ventilation. The one I was on had no windows that could be open. Felt uncomfortable. Would do it again if had to.

Snailhaterz · 16/07/2021 09:42

I'm 60 and double-jabbed and I've started going to/through London again, for a combination of work and pleasure. I've been to the theatre, gone into shops and cafes and am going to an art gallery next week. I feel pretty comfortable in doing so, although I did find myself swerving a really busy tube station last time and taking a long walk to the next one - but then what idiot tries to go to Oxford Circus on a Saturday afternoon? I've also been taking a few lateral flow tests to check I haven't bought anything back with me. I'm keen to enjoy things whilst I can, tbh.

Plump82 · 16/07/2021 09:43

@Oblomov21

Nervous of what exactly?
Well ive been wfh, get food delivered, keep going to shops to a minimum. I do have anxiety so for my own well being this has worked for me. Any time we've eaten out recently has been in the local beer garden where they do 2 4 hr slots a day and it all feels very safe. However being away for 5 days means being in multiple different places each day and its very different to how I've lived my life since this started.

A lot of places do outdoor eating that didnt do them before. Here to stay apparently.
Even indoors, doors are open to increase ventilation[can you tell I have a thing about ventilation?!].

Op, as I mentioned upthread I’m in York at the moment. If you do come and are still feeling a bit nervous I’ve noticed that Deliveroo and JustEat are doing a roaring trade - they’re zipping all over the city centre - get a delivery to your accommodation 😀

There's a restaurant that does Deliveroo that don't take reservations so will bear that in mind. We have tables reserved but its good to have a back up. I just feel I've done well not to catch covid now and just worry this trip will be when im most exposed. Saying it sounds daft I know but its just the way im feeling.

Doesn't bother me - covid is rife where I live so it can't be any worse than being at home! We were away two weeks ago and most of the time we spent outdoors anyway.

tappitytaptap · 16/07/2021 10:30

Very happy going away in the U.K. The threat of additional restrictions/quarantine/positive tests is what’s putting me off going abroad, I’m relaxed about the virus itself. As we have young kids the thought of the hassle involved is too much!
We have a couple of U.K. breaks planned and will make the most of the beaches/pubs/ restaurants/walks for this year. Not really avoiding indoor places but love eating outside if the weather allows (as I do every year!)

I think that’s really good that more places have outdoor dining, just a pity about our unreliable weather 😂
MikeHat · 16/07/2021 10:47

OP I live not far from York, there are masses of places that have outdoor seating, under cover in case of rain.

I've been away twice this year and booked again for August. All apartments.
In May and June it felt fine going out to restaurants but numbers were very low.
My next trip I'm not so sure. However even self cateringcab be a holiday. There is no way I am cooking on holiday. I will get a food delivery on arrival for snacks, drinks and breakfasts and for other meals if we don't feel safe going to restaurants we will just get takeaways.

MissDollyMix · 16/07/2021 11:05

I’m near York. Covid levels are high but a lot was initially due to an outbreak amongst the students (who’ve now mostly gone home) and then it’s run through several secondary schools. Everyone I know who’s had it recently has caught it from a school pupil. Vaccination levels are high here as has been compliance with isolating, social distancing and mask wearing. Personally I feel very safe here, although the city centre is always a little too crowded for me even precovid!

misssunshine4040 · 16/07/2021 12:13

I'm due to go to London for a gig and 3 day trip the middle of August and my dd has just got covid and I'm waiting my results.
I'm was worried before but I don't even know what to think now

DappledThings · 16/07/2021 12:24

Very happy. A bit tedious having to book everywhere still and being much more organised about what we are doing in the days so far in advance but zero concerns other than potentially missing out on stuff because of the bookings

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 16/07/2021 12:26

We are very happy going away in the UK. Enjoy!

TerritorialPissings · 16/07/2021 12:29

Good grief. I think the main risk you face is the journey there, but people seem to think the only risks come from Covid.

Well who wants be struck down sick on holiday? No thanks. And yes you could've caught anything be unwell but it's known covid is rife everywhere so ..
Mrstreehouse · 16/07/2021 12:32

We were in York recently and while I was a bit nervous beforehand, I was fine when I got there. It’s a lovely city and lots to do. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and was glad to be out and about tbh. There’s a real culture of pavement cafes now so feels a bit like being abroad.

SmallestInTheClass · 16/07/2021 14:34

Yes, going away in the summer. We're doing self catering though and expect to spend time outdoors at the beach and in the countryside and at the cottage. We won't be doing indoor activities, but will probably get take-aways like we do at home. The busiest place we're likely to go is the motorway services on the way.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 16/07/2021 14:57

Fairly comfortable. Where we are going there is space for kids to mix etc. My concern is that people won't test with symptoms or isolate in case it ruins their holiday, without giving a toss about making other families ill.

ButteringMyArse · 16/07/2021 15:00

Me, but I had a UK break last year and have had one already this year. Obv if the weather's going to be shit there's always the issue of whether it's worth bothering so there is that.

That sounds right up our street. Let's hope the weather's on our side!

Im concerned about this and also how vague Boris is being with whats allowed and not allowed and people will go wild come the 19th!
