Ready to cry over holiday and changing lists

Indoctro · 15/07/2021 13:07

Honestly I'm at my wits end with country traffic lights

I need to book a holiday abroad although I very much don't want to

My husband works abroad normally month away month home since covid he been having to do 3 months away 3 weeks home that's been taking its toll on our two young boys (5/7)

Now the country he is in has made a rule he can't be in UK 14 days prior to returning which means he can only get home for 4 days so unless I take kids abroad with him for 2 weeks he will only see them 4 days in 6 months

We literally were away to book Majorca today but they changed it yesterday and although I'm fully vaccinated I'm terrified of being abroad and the country we in goes to red and being stuck in a hotel in UK for 10 days with two kids on return - won't affect my husband as he will be flying off to work

I honestly don't know what to do, now I'm think Madeira or Croatia but again I'm panicking incase they change

Actually feel like crying and just want to be going to the cottage we had booked only 1.5 hours from our house, this was meant to be our holiday till the UK got red listed by the country he works

It's all such a mess and my kids are crying constantly for their dad Sad

Honestly? I would go to the cottage.

The holiday abroad sounds like a stressful complicated nightmare, and at the end your boys will still want their dad, and you will be even more exhausted and find it harder to support them.

Put your energy into what YOU need and then you will have a bit of capacity to help your boys see the good side of life. When they cry for their dad, its not totally HIM they want. Its their way of saying they want their old life back before covid. A fortnight with daddy isn't going to provide what they are crying for. But a fortnight of fun with mummy where you all recover a little from how hard its been, and have some fun times, is more likely to help them.

CustardyCreams · 15/07/2021 13:17

I disagree with previous post, I’d say they really do need to see their daddy. The uncertainty is agonising but imagine if you pull it off, it will be amazing to get that holiday! Gotta be worth the stress . What dates are you travelling?

Thisisworsethananticpated · 15/07/2021 13:18

So are you saying he can’t come
To the UK ? As if he does He can’t enter where He works ?

Can’t he come home and then stay somewhere else neutral on the way back

What country does he work in ?

I've cancelled the cottage unfortunately and lost £300 deposit too Sad I cancelled because stupidly I thought it was all good and I'd be heading off to Majorca soon.

The kids have been told there go abroad with dad , it's all they have been speaking about I'm not sure I can do that to them , not after the last 18 months. It's breaking there hearts he never home . I wanted my husband to quit his job but he feels it's utter madness in this climate to walk away from a job to nothing.

I just wish the government would give us some security with regards to travel.

I’m trying to understand if the problem is entry to UK

Or him getting back to work

He only gets 3 weeks off , it's two days to get home and he can't of been in UK 14 days prior to returning to The country he works as UK is on there red list even though he has to do mandatory government accommodation quarantine they won't actually allow him to enter if he recently been in UK .

Which country is it that is red for the uk but green for Majorca ? Confused

Getting back to work is the issue, he is exempt in UK because his job is on exemption list.

Aposterhasnoname · 15/07/2021 13:24

I’d be utterly astounded if they put a popular holiday destination on the red list without at least some notice, they simply don’t have enough hotel rooms to put all the holiday makers who’d be caught up in it in. I’d go to Majorca but book with someone like TUI and be prepared to come back early if necessary.

Indoctro · 15/07/2021 13:25

No one can enter the country at present unless working there, but they have included a extra rule just for uk also. But currently there are no commercial flights there anyway. Not that you would want to go anyway due to civil unrest and a coup going on.

MoiraNotRuby · 15/07/2021 13:25

Ah ok! So forget the cottage. Can you afford the UK quarantine hotel?

If so I would not bother trying to guess what colour countries will be. I would just plan for the hotel quarantine. Aren't your boys lucky, to get a family holiday at the beach with mummy and daddy, and then a hotel holiday with mummy with lots of colouring, stories, movies, indoor picnics, Hotel Olympics, etc etc.

I do think the foreign holiday sounds like a lot of pressure and would start minimising where I could. Reunions can be emotionally quite hard if everything is meant to be HAPPY and PERFECT....

Thisisworsethananticpated · 15/07/2021 13:27

I see
Does the country he works in have any exemptions? So for example i was able
To spend 130 hours in italy and not quarantine

I’d say step 1 is explore exemptions
Then if none , book somewhere neutral one week

Makes me so angry 😡

So do you think I'm just being silly.? And getting upset over nothing, I am a worrier and husband thinks it will all be fine but he won't be the one stuck in a hotel with two boys who fight constantly plus they would miss start of school as I will be returning the day before they start back in Scotland

Looking to go away first 2 weeks of august

PoorPawsPickPawpaws · 15/07/2021 13:28

Personally, I'd choose a green list country to holiday in. The chances of it going from Green straight to Red are lower than it going Green to Amber and for Amber countries you can quarantine at home I think?

I feel for you, OP. Sounds like a rough deal :(

Cheerio21 · 15/07/2021 13:29

Book your holiday op.
If I was in your situation, I would.

Serenschintte · 15/07/2021 13:29

I’m so sorry. I’m living in Europe. We thought that maybe the country we are in would go on the green list. But no.
It’s really bringing to feeling like a form of psychological manipulation and control.
Where we are we have always been ‘allowed’ to leave the country to go on holiday. Yes you might have to quarantine on return but not in a hotel.
I wonder how long it will be until I see my parents.

Indoctro · 15/07/2021 13:30

@Thisisworsethananticpated it's Burma , which everyone is banned apart from a very few international workers

No real exemption only rule in place is the uk one , any where else in world he can enter from.

OP posts:
MoiraNotRuby · 15/07/2021 13:31

Age 5 and 7, missing the start of school is fine. Honestly cross that one straight off the worry list!

Geamhradh · 15/07/2021 13:33

Hi OP, I think we've chatted on other threads about these nightmare restrictions. Have you looked at places like Malta, Greece and Croatia? I was hoping for Spain too but cases are going up so rapidly that I think restrictions there will only get worse.

That was the plan and if possible just book the day or two before leaving so left it last minute to make sure no changes , unfortunately his work pushing for me to book something so they know what country he will be in for returning to work

I think I might just go book a Croatia or Bulgaria and hope for the best. We gonna book a villia to stay away from people the best we can because I'm also paranoid about flagging up a positive test when trying to return home - just something else for me to stress about Confused

I wish I could calm down about it but honestly I've major anxiety over it ,

OP posts:
Thisisworsethananticpated · 15/07/2021 13:36

I feel your pain , my kids didn’t see their dad for a whole year

I took them there but it was expensive and stressful

I’d feel the fear , do it anyway and travel to a green country
Have a plan B is they turn amber xxx

Yes, my town went into 'high alert' today and I cannot leave it. ot even for the nearest town.

I would not book Spain.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 15/07/2021 13:39

Can I say I was crazy with anxiety about the trip

I still have jaw ache

But I’m so glad we did it and risked it

I agree do with Bulgaria or Croatia

Remember even if they turn amber it’s stay at home so no biggie

Geamhradh · 15/07/2021 13:39

@BillieSpain, thanks Billie for the update. Looks like my Seville-Granada-Cordoba triangle will have to wait again. Sad
Hope everything goes ok for you over there.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 15/07/2021 13:41

I agree with a op. Dc need to see their dad. What about Malta? Over 12s need vaccinating but you get don't do your dc are perfect ages. It's very unlikely to go red as currently fully green and most have been fully vaxxed.
