Maybe I'm really silly but the risk of central venous blood clots and thrombocytopenia is just one I don't want to take. These aren't just regular clots, these are very specific and difficult to treat so pretty deadly.

I had the first and I think I've fully talked myself out of putting it in my body again now. I don't think there's any going back and having a second for me to be honest.

However, of course cases are going up which is scary too. Am I alone in this ?

Me - second dose was booked for 10 days’ time, but I got a text from NHS a few weeks ago to say they’d cancelled it. I’m now 4 weeks pregnant so want to leave it til after 12 weeks as I’ve already had 2 miscarriages and don’t want to take any kind of risk.

crumpet · 14/07/2021 11:02

How long ago was it? If it’s left too long before the second dose, then does it mean you’d have to start the course all over again? I recall there was some concern when the government extended the period between jabs to 12 weeks rather than 8.

I don’t know anyone who has just had the one.

Silkiecats · 14/07/2021 11:09

I'm still waiting for second, scheduled for Thursday and really worried about blood clots. I have had pain in my side since the first one which has never gone and blood spots. I wish you could request a different second one or someone to phone for advice.

Hotpinkangel19 · 14/07/2021 11:20

I cancelled my second and I'm well over the 12 weeks now.

Gardentiger · 14/07/2021 12:22

I cancelled my second... Not really sure what to do now

PeonyTime · 14/07/2021 12:26

I'm in isolation. Due vaccination the other day, but couldnt go. If I catch covid off DS it will be a month before I can get it. Scuppers any "double vaccinated dont need to isolate" plans.

Having held DS while he cried out in pain most of last night, please get jabbed. And he's not got it badly.

Sunbird24 · 14/07/2021 13:00

@PeonyTime I do really want to get my second jab, I just have to get past the point where all my miscarriages have happened before I even consider it.

AlexaShutUp · 14/07/2021 13:28

Your risk of being hospitalised is significantly higher with the delta variant, and one jab offers very little protection. I would definitely get the second one with cases going up in the way that they are. I was anxious about the clots myself, but I'm now out of the danger period and so glad that I got double jabbed. I'd be terrified now if I hadn't had them.

PeonyTime · 14/07/2021 13:35

@Sunbird24 your plan sounds exceedingly sensible. I hope you get some good news soon Flowers

beattieedny · 14/07/2021 13:38

I'm not having my second as the first caused quite serious side effects for me. I've asked for an alternative but it's not available, apparently, so I guess I'll be taking my chances. I do have antibodies, but who knows. I'm not going through what happened the first time. I'd feel like I was deliberately making myself ill.

Remaker · 14/07/2021 13:49

I don’t have any stats to hand but certainly we have been told in Australia that the second dose poses significantly lower risk than the first one?

We had the age limit for AZ raised to 50 and then to 60, when we had zero cases, but now that we have outbreaks here (small compared to UK but significant for us) they’ve lowered it to 40 again. And while the optimum spacing is 12 weeks they’ve suggested those in outbreak areas get their second dose after 6 -8 weeks. I’m at 8 weeks tomorrow and just weighing up whether to bring mine forward as we are in lockdown and I’m working from home, so not much personal risk.

One dose of AZ provides very little protection against Delta.

rosie1959 · 14/07/2021 14:04

Having just one dose seems a little pointless You have taken the first step but without the second vaccination you cover may be reduced or ineffective.
If anyone has had really serious side effects surely they would be offered an alternative my SIL had a TIA unknown if it was connected to the vaccine but was given Pfizer for her second
If you had the first dose with no serious problem the 2nd is very unlikely to give you any problems My son and daughter had so flu like effect with the first nothing with the second both in their 30s

H1978 · 14/07/2021 14:08

Had my second on Monday. Was booked for 2nd august but went to drop in centre as it had been 8 weeks since my first.

MRex · 14/07/2021 14:12

Just to clarify, every type of blood clot is specific, and any type can be deadly if you don't get treatment. There has been a treatment protocol since March for this VIIT and any clots are treatable if someone goes to the hospital.
The number of second dose cases have been even rarer, especially for younger people.
It's fine for you to make decisions about not having a vaccine to protect yourself, but it is important not to worry others by unintentionally giving out misinformation.

SwanShaped · 14/07/2021 14:15

I was very reluctant to get my second. Felt very anxious about it and cancelled it. Then decided to get it coz of the whole vaccine passport thing and not having to isolate if you’ve had both. Pissed me right off. Anyway, it’s been a week and I’m ok so far.

MotherOfDemons · 14/07/2021 14:15

I haven't, but I have gotten pregnant since my last and I am worried about blood clots as they no longer give them to people of my age!

TulipVictory · 14/07/2021 14:17

@rosie1959 I had my first bank in March and my second was due around the time when all the clot news came out

That was a while ago had my first early March second in May. Can your GP not give you some advice

Cosybelles · 14/07/2021 14:44

At the time I got my second, about a month ago, there were no cases of blood clots following second doses. One jab offers a very small amount of protection from covid and the risks of covid infection are higher than any effect of the vaccine. It's not too late to book your second. Ring the 119 helpline and they will arrange it for you.

Warhertisuff · 14/07/2021 23:30

Not getting a second AZ jab because of the minute risks of clots, have got the risk analysis totally messed up.

The risk comparisons between vaccine and Covid shown in the Spring were for low levels of Covid (ie you were very unlikely to catch it in the first place, and even if you did, the risk was low.). That completely changes where a Covid rates are 50 or so times higher than they were back in April.

Oaktree55 · 14/07/2021 23:38

The first dose provides the protection against severe disease. The second dose adds very little, just adds to protection against symptomatic disease. One dose plus infection will leave you better protected against variants. If you are uncomfortable then wait. I’m sure U.K. will finally get around to offering mRNA booster soon which is far superior to 2x AZ. Don’t feel bullied into second dose AZ. 2nd dose mRNA is however more important. You could always do antibody test to check you responded to first AZ, lots available on line.

Divebar2021 · 14/07/2021 23:46

How can you think it’s just you when this subject has been endlessly debated on MN.? Endlessly. Just crack on if that’s what you want to do and all the best to you.

Patapouf · 14/07/2021 23:56

Yes the clot issue is a worry but the chances are so, so slim.

I think the threat of the delta variant and of Covid in general actually means it's worth getting the second AZ jab.

I've had both (youngish and pregnant) and haven't dropped dead.

Warhertisuff · 15/07/2021 05:37

I don't think it's true to say that the 2nd dose adds "very little" protection.

A recent well reported study showed that hospitalisation was reduced by 71% after one dose but 92% after two doses. In other words, hospitalisation rates in a population having had a single AZ jab would be 4 times that of an equivalent population that had had 2 jabs!

Of course you could argue that it's possible to be hospitalised for a short period with moderate Covid, but even so....

beattieedny · 15/07/2021 11:20

It'd be good if people could be less patronising to those of us who have had a bad experience and been essentially dismissed. Ofc, statistically, it's better to be fully vaccinated but when one is personally an outlier, then finger wagging about stats isn't adding anything. I am from a medical background. My entire family work in medicine, pharmaceuticals, and R&D. I understand the scientific and statistical numbers.
