To think Boris is walking us into another lockdown?

Urging us to be cautious? We won't know hospitalisations & cases will be like in a fortnight after the euros... I am double vaxxed, we have done everything the govt has asked of us.... I'm sure I'll be flamed for being a pessimist but I think there will be more lockdowns to come...

I hope not, but I don’t trust him for a moment.

What is really making me cross is that it is becoming clear that they don’t care if the under 18s get it. They are going for herd immunity for that generation rather than vaccination.
We have no idea about long covid for kids.

Homeontherangeuk · 13/07/2021 18:49

That's what I'm worried about... The kids need an education. 36, 000 cases today & 50 deaths... Roll on a fortnight after the euros & I dread to think what state we'll be in... I still don't know if he'll impose more lockdowns though... Or if he'll backtrack & blame us for not being cautious...

The cautious urging is just to get us to adjust our behaviour to spread out the millions of cases and thousands of deaths and hospitalisations July 19th is causing.

But yes, it's a very dangerous game, and I don't see how the hell they NHS can cope with thousands of covid admissions again without having to double the waiting lists again.

PrincessNutNuts · 13/07/2021 18:56

There are millions of people not getting the healthcare they need because the government is keeping the NHS too busy with repeated waves of covid.

Sooner or later those chickens will come home to roost in the form of increased all cause mortality and long term morbidity we'll struggle with for generations.

SonnetForSpring · 13/07/2021 19:05

Looks like lots back tracking will be happening.

But they’ll no longer be in power so won’t affect them. They are a disgrace. Back to me not being able to go anywhere again. 😭😭

The numbers today were awful... Terrible seeing 50 deaths... The Dutch prime minister apologised this week for lifting the restrictions too fast & has to impose them again...

I don't suppose ours will.

Even after a couple of doublings.

Nicola has spoken. Boris quite often follows her….

Suranjeep · 13/07/2021 19:38

Yes I suspect the PM will backtrack after the Scottish announcement. Although someone should remind Kranky that if there’s any kind of restrictions she can’t call it Level 0

Maybe Level 0.5 but 0 is no restrictions*

  • but with restrictions.

You may all be right ("everyone's an epidemiologist") but would you all just give it a fucking break so we can at least come out of this one first. However briefly.

PrincessNutNuts · 13/07/2021 20:11

It's awful @AncientandFabulous.

July 19th takes more freedom than it gives.

People just haven't caught on yet.

Take it up with the government.

If they had ever learned from their mistakes they wouldn't be so predictable.

But at this point expecting them to do what they've always done is a pretty safe bet.

EastWestWhosBest · 13/07/2021 20:15

I think it would be hard for him to call another lockdown, even if it was needed. He would lose face and votes.

My question, and I’m really not being factious, who is dying? Surely those who are vulnerable have been vaccinated.

AgnesNaismith · 13/07/2021 20:19

Hmm...have you read he last paragraph in that newspaper report?

Very possibly, people who are already very sick or elderly, and dying with covid because they've caught it in hospital when they're in for something else.

You have to look at the 7 day average, not one single day, to make any sort of comparison. There's always a Tuesday spike after the weekend lag. I think there were only 7 deaths reported yesterday (from memory, haven't checked).

The truth is we are a million miles away from the levels of hospitalisations and deaths when we had the equivalent number of daily cases back in Feb.
The vaccines are doing their job.

Deaths in June were below the 5 year average according to ONS.
We have to get on with life now, we can't continue as we are.

PrincessNutNuts · 13/07/2021 21:07

There have been more deaths so far in July than there were in the whole of May.

Deaths in 2021 so far are not down on the 2015-19 average according to the actuaries I follow on Twitter,

The reason deaths are down in some weeks is because as well as killing people years or decades before their time covid also kills people just a little early.

What about deaths from other causes? How many each of those today?

I think the important thing is we’ve convinced the public that’s not the case.

If nothing else, it’s been an impressive social media campaign.
