Signs of hope

A month or so back Blackburn peaked at 677 cases per 100,000... It's now halved to 373. That's happened without any lockdown or restrictions (apart from keeping masks in classrooms). Blackburn led the way with Bolton (which is also from its high) with the Delta variant so I'm wondering if it's reasonable to hope that we may as a country peak before too long.

Keeping hoping

userperuser · 12/07/2021 19:02

Cornwall now decreasing and it’s not showing on the government site yet but in Liverpool there has also now been a marked decrease in cases:

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 19:14

It could be due to behaviour change. Very difficult to say.

Orf1abc · 12/07/2021 19:20

They're expecting hospital admissions to peak in August, so whilst it's always good to remain hopeful, it might be a bit soon to think things are anywhere near over.

Orf1abc · 12/07/2021 19:22

In Nottinghamshire, rates have doubled compared to last week, so as in previous waves, different areas will see peaks at different times.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 12/07/2021 19:24

Marked decrease in cases in my area too

Florelei · 12/07/2021 19:25

I hope so. I live in the NE and cases are crazy high and I think still rising but it looks like the rate of growth is slowing. Fingers crosses

Florelei · 12/07/2021 19:26

Crossed

Torvean · 12/07/2021 19:27

After the criwds in Wembley yoyr cases are going to rise in about a week.
The same that happened when ppl travelled from Scotland to London.

Oh and the rate change is due to vaccination. Not due to the lack of travel restriction which meant ppl could go on holiday and spread it in areas with low cases.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 12/07/2021 19:27

School holidays should also have an impact

Blackburn is about a month ahead of other places so that fits with hospital admissions peaking in August. If so, that means autumn is looking more promising.

Bordois · 12/07/2021 19:32

The rate of increase in cases has dropped from around 70% to 28%. Cases are still rising, but not as fast as they were a couple of weeks back.

Dumpypumpy · 12/07/2021 19:34

I hope so - Blackburn’s natural immunity rate is the highest in the country - 15% of the population has had covid ove the last year. So surely the virus will hit the wall soon. Burnley nearby is second highest in the country for natural infection - 13% of the population has had covid (that’s just the official cases i am sure there must really be double that amount of locals who hav had the virus. ) Cases there are still rising in Burnley but not too fast. The current covid rates in the north east are crazy high at the moment.

Warhertisuff · 12/07/2021 20:06

The R number is markedly lower in the north-west than other regions.

What do people think of Tim Spector's (zoe app) assessment that cases in the unvaccinated have peaked now? I must admit I was a little surprised by it but great news if it is true.

That's good news... Maybe we're at, or close to, the peak!

Zoe has recently acquired funding from the government, so all their figures are now fiddled with to show support for Johnson's "let it rip" strategy.

I've stopped following Zoe.

Mintjulia · 13/07/2021 04:49

Let's hope so.

We returned to the office last month. Now we have two confirmed cases.our youngest two employees, so back working from home.

Everyone else has been double jabbed. Hopefully they will brush it off and then we can all relax a little.

I live in Bolton, according to the Bolton news cases are going up again 🙄

Do you have a source to show figures are being fiddled please?

Was wondering this too - are you suggesting they're lying about the number of people reporting symptoms, @NannyAndJohn?

NannyAndJohn · 14/07/2021 00:06

Not lying, but presenting the figures in a way that hides the government's incompetence as much as possible.

Prof. Spector's tone on Twitter has certainly changed, apparently we've been "at the peak" for the last month.

I'll be sticking to Independent SAGE from now on.
