Have you had covid twice?

I had covid in January, one vaccine and think I have delta now - all the symptoms, in my kids school and waiting on PCR. Back in beginning of the year, they were saying that it was very rare to get covid twice. Appreciate mutations and variants, but just curious how many have had it twice?

Following have had it once (long covid) and have also been wondering about this!

Also interested to see if you get a positive PCR as I have read of some people getting all the symptoms (and even being exposed) but keep testing negative, maybe viral load is lower or something..

LeaveHomeNow · 10/07/2021 20:35

Sorry about your long covid @Cherrub.

I will report back - it's been about 30 hours so hoping it comes soon (guy at testing station said it was four hours response at the moment!). It could be a bad cold - but I am in a hotspot for it. Started with very sore throat, headache, runny nose and now cough...feel worse this time around, although felt rough for a couple of days first time too.

I've heard of a some students that tested positive in October and have recently tested positive again. I think it's more common than people think.

Like with everything else there seems to be some kind of reluctance to admit this is a thing unless there are gold plated scientific studies to prove it, and so people who have it twice but don't need to go into hospital don't get picked up. You'd think with our 'world-beating' (ahem) test and trace system they'd be able to link two cases in the same person though.

Blueberry40 · 10/07/2021 20:49

My DS was covid positive in October and has covid again now- he’s had one vaccine

Blueberry40 · 10/07/2021 20:52

Sorry just noticed your question @Cherubb yes he had a positive PCR each time

Cherubb · 10/07/2021 21:04

I hope he is doing OK @Blueberry40 and that the vaccine helps him a bit.

Whathefisgoingon · 10/07/2021 22:32

Not me but my niece is currently on her second covid infection. This time around is worse for her but managed at home both times round. I think they were around 6 months apart. She did have an antibody test and about 4 months post first infection there were no antibodies detected.

LeaveHomeNow · 10/07/2021 22:57

Thanks for responses! I have heard of it happening more and more so it's interesting - just loaded details in Zoe, just in case. I haven't taken unnecessary risks but with my second jab two weeks away and having had it previously, I did think I was pretty safe for now.

I know people who've had it twice, and been tested, they work in care homes. One is part of a study because she had covid and a test really early on in the pandemic

Anecdotal, but I also know someone who works in an institution who says some inmates have tested positive 3 times

LilyPond2 · 10/07/2021 23:12

We have a government that is pursuing a herd immunity strategy in relation to a virus that can infect the same person multiple times. A truly horrendous state of affairs, with unvaccinated children at the sharp end of the policy.

LeaveHomeNow · 10/07/2021 23:32

Three times!! Goodness! Yes, I have also heard anecdotally about people getting it more than once, hence my concern for the overall situation. Seems quite logical that an illness that is presenting with completely different symptoms could reinfect, as it's clearly mutated to a significant degree. I do hope there is some common sense coming out of Whitehall on Monday.

Both my daughter and partner have had it twice. March 2020 and Jan 2021 (before either was jabbed). Someone at my daughter's work has it 5 times between march 2020 to present date.
Maggiesfarm · 10/07/2021 23:57

I haven't but a cousin had it twice; first time was early last year and he was very ill for a long time with complications but eventually recovered. Then he and partner caught it again quite a while later, second time for him, but were not very ill and it soon went.

Tootsey11 · 11/07/2021 00:14

I've had it 4 times.

Negative tests in between.

Antibody test via Gp after 3rd infection, had none.

Mixmeup · 11/07/2021 00:33

My sister is a nurse and has had it twice, second time post first vaccination.

Personally I'm not convinced anyone will ever have proper immunity.

CharleyChook · 11/07/2021 00:47

I tested positive for Covid about 8 months ago. I’ve been ill (in bed) all this week. I’m so tired and weak. I am double jabbed. No other symptoms. I have done a LFT. Negative. I’m not convinced… I’m going to a test centre tomorrow. I would hate to put my family at risk. That’s why I am isolating in my bedroom at the moment. I will do all I can to protect my family from this shitty virus

Babyroobs · 11/07/2021 01:47

My Ds1 had had it twice both times confirmed by a positive PCR test.

Indigopearl · 11/07/2021 07:44

Immunity from vaccination is meant to be much better than natural immunity which is generally reported to be around 6 months.

There are also now some reports about people being infected with 2 different strains at the same time.

MRex · 11/07/2021 08:00

About half of people who are infected with earlier strains can be reinfected by Beta or Delta according to a recent study, table attached. Vaccination protection looks much stronger than natural infection after 2 doses, but might wane; it's an EU study, so Pfizer was on a 3 week interval and might last longer here at 8-12 wks. Whether a third dose will last much longer or not remains to be seen, it's possible that a number of doses with longer gaps or mix of doses will create lasting immunity.

So you aren't unusual OP. I also know a couple of people who've caught covid since vaccination, but they have been within the initial weeks after their jab or had a single dose only. Unpleasant, but two are better now and one just infected last week seems to be improving (well, sending work email that isn't urgent and saying he's bored, so he presumably isn't still flat out on the couch feeling like death as he described on Wednesday).

MRex · 11/07/2021 08:00

I forgot to say, get well soon!

Frazzled2207 · 11/07/2021 08:03

This is worrying
I have read that if you get it multiple times it should be less severe each time.
Hope it’s negative

brittleheadgirl · 11/07/2021 08:11

Not me but a colleague has. The second time she got it she was also double jabbed!!

RedToothBrush · 11/07/2021 08:26

The issue isn't whether people get it more than once. Its whether it is as severe on subsequent infections. If it declines significantly in severity it isn't so much of a problem and its following the pattern of infectious respiratory diseases as you would perhaps expect.
Butterfly44 · 11/07/2021 08:58

I know people double jabbed who have got covid atm. They are ill but not hospitalised.

Responses to covid are such an individual thing. You simply cannot know how your body will respond to an infection. Some will be absolutely fine, another with similar health stats might be in ICU.

Vaccination does afford protection, although with this variant we are seeing cases of second infection, they are not going into hospital and death rates are low.....Currently

Sanguinesuzy · 11/07/2021 08:59

Ds 2 14 caught it end of nov, just had a cough and a bit tired. Then caught it about a month ago. Wouldn't have known to test but for having to self isolate from school due to bubble bursting. Again a mild cough which then seemed to turn into an ear and chest infection a few weeks later. He did get an email suggesting he was unusual from NHS England and to be involved in research.
