Is everyone taking vitamin d?

IHateFlies · 09/07/2021 09:39

There are a few studies now that shows that taking vitamin d could be extremely beneficial to reduce the severity of symptoms. It seems that many people are not aware of this.
Now that all restrictions are lifting, shouldn’t this information be more widespread?

I am - good to be reminded though. Thank you.

TartanDMs · 09/07/2021 09:44

I have been prescribed a high dose by my GP, who remarked that I have the vit d levels of Elizabeth Fritzl Hmm after recent diagnostic tests. Apparently a safe range starts at about 20, and mine was 7.

irritableshark · 09/07/2021 09:45

I do take it anyway but I thought studies had shown the difference is tiny. I recall reading Tim Spector dismiss it. The use of it as an in hospital treatment were mega doses not otc amounts.

Is that really what your GP said? That’s a terrible, inappropriate comment.

I am (largely down to DH who has an obsession with vitamins)

ElaborateSalad · 09/07/2021 09:55

Not during the summer, no.

Arsebucket · 09/07/2021 09:56

Yes, but i’ve taken it for years. Along with vit c, zinc, iodine (from sea kelp).

Holothane · 09/07/2021 09:56

Yes have been for a while, you can now buy a year supply at our chemist so might invest.

wasthataburp · 09/07/2021 09:59

Yes! I have been raking it all along.

megletthesecond · 09/07/2021 10:01

I was over the winter.
Not very often at the moment though. I'm outdoors a lot and take a multi vit and mineral all year anyway.

PositiveLife · 09/07/2021 10:01

I'm taking it because my vit d level is low and I've been advised to take it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/07/2021 10:02

Yes, heard this months ago and follow the advice. Should be D3, apparently, most effective.

DrNo007 · 09/07/2021 10:02

Yes have been since the pandemic began and we take a high dose one—lower doses not useful. Also zinc and vitamin c as all have been found useful and many docs in other countries are prescribing all these as prevention and treatment. As to why this is not recommended by nhs and our lot of “expert advisors”, I believe it’s down to money. Big Pharma is making a killing from patented vaccines but makes nowt from unpatentable vitamins.

As a side note a friend’s son is a hospital consultant in the nhs and he and his colleagues have been given vit d supplements by their employer—but his patients, general members of the public, are told nothing and given nothing. Go figure.

BlackKittyKat · 09/07/2021 10:03

Most people in UK will be low on vit D. It's now recommended that all children have supplements and is something my health visitor has asked several times.

I'm not sure how much it will help with covid symptoms but for general health and well being reasons me and my family are taking it.

kimlo · 09/07/2021 10:43

yes, but I did anyway. My consultant did recomend that I took a higher dose so thats what me and dh take now.

KatherineJaneway · 09/07/2021 12:34

Yes, been taking it for over a year now along with a good quality multivitamin

BouncyDaisy · 09/07/2021 12:38

I started taking vitamin D along with other supplements a number of years ago. I take a cocktail of supplements every day.

I grew up in poverty and with a poor diet that was mainly high in carbs like cereal for breakfasts, white bread buttered for lunch, chips with sauce on top for dinner. That was what my parents fed me and what I had in my teens. I made some changes to my diet in my 20s. I thought they were good changes but still not great looking back. A lot of processed foods and sugar drinks.

I was in my 30s when I has a ah-ha moment and I changed everything. My teeth were not looking great and I thought my bones are probably the same. My body was probably leaching minerals from my teeth and bones for a long time just survive.

I changed everything about my diet and added supplements. Vitamin D is one of many.

I think there is an improvement. I notice a difference in energy. Then there's the winter before last everyone around me came down with colds but I somehow escaped getting a cold. I dread colds because I was always susceptible to sinuses and chest infections which often followed on from colds. I do think something is working for me now. It's hard to say what it's attributed to.

AddsVsGeorgs · 09/07/2021 12:39

Yep. Me and partner is and made sure other members of my family have a good stock too

AddsVsGeorgs · 09/07/2021 12:41

All ECV (Extremely clinically vulnerable) people in England and Scotland were given a free supply in the post by the Government

ifonly4 · 09/07/2021 12:43

I took vitamin D over the winter. Not taking it now as walk to work, enjoy countryside walks and all my friends are still meeting outside for coffee/evening get togethers.

As it gets colder and less sun, then I'll start taking it again.

NotMyCat · 09/07/2021 12:45

Yes, 4000 d3 as my level was about 10 last time it was tested (I had a course of high dose)

NotMyCat · 09/07/2021 12:46

These are tiny to swallow and cheap

Is everyone taking vitamin d?
ppeatfruit · 09/07/2021 12:57

Not specifically but I have a very high in all minerals and vitamins, organic and nearly raw diet. (not from a bottle!).

I had a weak version Covid just before the first lockdown, it wasn't contagious and lasted for about a week . I only knew what it was because it was like nothing I'd ever had before and I lost my sense of taste and smell for 2 days. I gargled with t tree and sniffed ravensara, both work very well to kill bad bacteria\viruses. No medical professional will tell you that.

Oh and I took fresh garlic with turmeric, organic honey, and an organic whole lemon. Blended together, 3 times a day. That is an amazing mix to kill infection of any sort.

It's interesting with Vit D. dh spends lots of time in the sun but has a low vit D blood test results. he drinks a lot of strong coffee, I wonder if the caffiene removes some vitamins from our bodies?

JustMeAndWheatley · 09/07/2021 13:01

I only take as and when I remember in winter. I’ve had my levels tested several times over the last couple of years as part of routine blood tests and they’re always high.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 09/07/2021 13:03

No, unless it's one of the vitamins in my personal multivitamins. I'll have a look.
