One dose 10% protection!

The Telegraph, this evening, is saying one dose of AZ/Pfizer only gives 10% protection against the Delta.
Is this accurate?
I had AZ in March with prolonged nasty side effects, and may not be able to have any further vaccine. I feel 'damaged' by the vaccine, please tell me this is not all for just 10% protection?

@ MRex.

Thank you.

Way past the ovulation concern, much too old, lol.

I keep waiting to be properly recovered, I wanted to be back to my pre-jab self before any more vaccine, but I can't wait forever, Delta is scary, - comes a point when I have to bite the bullet for one vaccine or another. Or stay hiding in this cupboard:)

The disadvantage of having these studies and scientific papers available for the world to see is that the majority don't have a clue what any of it means. They pick out a few sentences without looking at the context and start threads with alarming titles

It’s not just people posting on forums, so-called ‘journalists’ have been doing this since the pandemic began. Many of whom also haven’t got a clue what they’re reading.

I don’t have a clue, either. I’m not a scientist. But at least I am aware of that fact!

@takemetocedarpoint

So in this study the AZ is performing better than the Pfizer?
Ive read that the AZ continues to build immunity after doses whereas the pfizer reaches a peak protection.

@penni00 my Df isn't having Pfizer jab for similar reasons , it's worrying especially as he uses a bus daily and can't wait to get rid of his mask

olivethegreat · 09/07/2021 21:58

Second jab that is. I don't feel I can put pressure on as I know he's scared to take the second jab . He had some sort of eye reaction to it which is ongoing .

Grimbelina · 09/07/2021 22:02

penni00 I am in a similar situation and am currently delaying having a second AZ until I am feeling better (which is of course taking a chance...). I have been offered Pfizer but worry that I could be even more ill and with more and different issues if the mixing gives more side effects as some studies are showing. Your neuro's advice lines up with my own thinking from all the reading I am doing.

MRex the problem is there really isn't any advice for many of us. It can be hard enough even getting a GP to take vaccine side effects seriously (especially if you already have some health conditions) let alone get in front of a consultant. I am waiting on referrals and have had some incredibly unhelpful conversations with doctors over the last couple of weeks.... they could be months away.

I know there are plenty mixing vaccines abroad, but likely these are people who didn't have really bad AZ reactions, so following with a Pfizer doesn't seem so much of a gamble. It is different for those of us with bad side effects from AZ. The thing is, if us bad AZ side effect people all bottle out of trying the Pfizer after the AZ, there won't be any case studies! We need case studies so that we have more of an idea of the consequences ...You first!!!

I saw the article and seems like low number.
Husband 48 due 2nd az in 2 weeks and me 41 due 2nd pfizer 3 weeks time unless can bring forwards.
Husband had no side effects other than sore arm.
I have very sore arm and was tired for days.

The issue is level of protection does vary with each varient and sometimes each person.
The tests they done are in labs and trials so quite possible doesn't look at delta varient.
Our local hospital is doing a az booster study for the South African varient although that varients never really taken off big time in UK that I know of delta is the most dominant..

I also read people get worse reactions if they already had covid.
My sons teacher got ill from jab not sure yes single or double jabbed.
He recently caught covid and was quite poorly no walk in the park.

I just don't want to get ill I have chest infections every winter I'm not classed as vulnerable group 1-9.
Opening up knowing so many not had 2nd doses is irresponsible .

As for America they have used more moderna / pfizer and haven't used az.
They have less delta varient over there.
Also mitigating rules seem vary from state to state.

One dose 10% protection!

Friend of MIL had a bad reaction to covid last March with long Covid (lots of heart issues etc), then a bad reaction to AZ that seemed to set her back with symptoms. She had similar advice to you, she was told if it isn't an allergy then better to have the original vaccine for fewer side effects. She was quite poorly with the second one too unfortunately, so dizzy she had a fall. Apart from the hip bruising (hospital trip), she was mostly recovered after 2 weeks, so faster than with the first but still not good. She's still getting some flares of her chest pain, but that's been since covid. I suspect this'll make you feel even more nervous, but as MIL mentioned it and you want real examples I thought it best to tell you. Her long covid might be having an effect too that's hard to unpick, so if you haven't had covid then it might not be as relevant to you.

@penni00. I had some similar side effects to you. I had that weird tingling electric shock thing. Not wobbly legs though, I had severe pain in my bones which was odd but didn’t last too long. I also had headaches and extreme tiredness and just didn’t feel right. Weirdly I didn’t feel better until I had the second dose! After the second dose, I had pain in my bones again but only for a few hours and then I started feeling better, more like myself before the first vaccine.
I am someone who tends to overreact to medicines and chemicals too, I think probably because my livers not recovered from long term chemotherapy many years ago.
