Will they u-turn on masks?

SoSadAboutMyDad · 06/07/2021 17:40

I really hope so. I’m double vaccinated but still a bit concerned about catching Covid and I’m also not keen on the children getting it. Cases are completely out of hand and one of the hospitals in Scotland has had to cancel elective surgery today because they are full, mainly because of covid. So much for the speech the other day about how opening up is for the health of the nation Confused. England will follow Scotland for sure and end up with hospitals full. Scotland aren’t removing facemasks thankfully and there seems to have been a bit of shock that England is going to such as from Andy Burnham.

AIBU to think that they will u turn on masks by the 19th?

@byvirtue

Masks are the covid equivalent of Stockholm syndrome. There will be a minority of people who wear them forever but I think mask wearing will tail off quite quickly and it will be hard to reintroduce on a mandatory basis.
Agree Some people have embraced the whole thing and will persist, but should never be mandated again.
DillyDot · 06/07/2021 19:37

I love my mask! My eyes are my best feature, my nose and hairy chin my worst! Quite happy to continue wearing it to be honest, comfort blanket or not. Doesn't bother me one jot for wear it for several hours at a time.

Hardbackwriter · 06/07/2021 19:38

@GlutenFreeGingerCake

I don't think they will u turn but a lot of places will ask for them such as on transport and the Gov will say it's up to individual businesses, institutions and councils to decide their own rules.
I got the train on Saturday and was the only person I could see who wore my mask for the entire journey, so good luck to the companies enforcing continued mask wearing once it has no more legal force than the quiet carriage rules.
Geamhradh · 06/07/2021 19:48

"masks are the Covid equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome"

Just had a Google to see where that saying came from. American conspiracy theorist anti Vax websites, predictably. First three hits also listed on major Fact Check websites for fake news.

Unsurprisingly.

imeanreeally · 06/07/2021 19:48

@user432543424532 I was referring to the posters initial "cases are completely out of hand" in Scotland and asking how she came to this conclusion?

But as for...

Huh? Cases will go up once restrictions are lifted.

Regardless off all the restrictions that people stopped caring about a long time ago like household mixing... Did you see the Scotland fans? Both in the news and the ones who went round to their mates instead of travelling down?

I'm struggling to see how the peak cases after "super-spreader events" + schools having so many cases they had to start isolating siblings will be so much lower than...

Peak cases with schools closed but people stop wearing masks and pretending to socially distance and going to the odd wedding?

If we stopped the restrictions tomorrow (while schools are closed)... I think cases might rise slightly yes but look at the cases VS hospitalisations at the start of the year compared to the cases VS hospitalisations now.

You could double, triple, quadruple the peak cases and thus double, triple, quadruple the hospital numbers... and the hospital numbers would still be considerably lower than they were at the start of the year?

Because the vaccines have broken the link between cases and hospitalisations.

Precisely. So this hysteria over ‘cases’ is totally irrational.

Oblomov21 · 06/07/2021 19:57

Clearly you are the minority then OP?
Can't wait to ditch them myself. I'm not even sure they are that effective.

I’m surprised. Twitter seems to lean left and is full of the blue heart, WearAMask, FBPE types. I would have expected it to go I’m not going out and welding myself in and sealing up all windows for the next ten years route.

ThornAmongstRoses · 06/07/2021 20:03

Masks are just a security blanket, we've had them in place for a year now and the virus has still been able to infect people in high numbers. I really do think they are more a placebo than anyone cares to admit.

I absolutely agree, if masks are so successful at preventing transmissions then our numbers wouldn’t be so high.

I’m sure someone will say, “But just think how high the numbers would be without masks!” but I still stand by my point.

How can we know for sure that case numbers would have been higher if masks weren’t in use? A hypothetical argument doesn’t hold much value.

BlueSurfer · 06/07/2021 20:06

Israel backtracked after ten days. Be interesting to see which of our restrictions returns first and how soon. I gather masks and social distancing and pretty much a given for this winter.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/07/2021 20:08

That Laworficfion thing is supported by anti maskers. So l guess it’s no surprise that they voted that way.

Not supported by others though.

A lot of infections have happened through household transmission either within families or through people visiting each other at home, and obviously masks are not worn there.

It doesn't mean masks don't work, though.

I agree with both of you.

Where states/ nations have changed their mandates on mask wearing, there has been negligible difference in the trends on viral spread.

(And if I ate the wrong thing, I can still clear an area with a single fart despite it going through several layers of fabric, so I'm really not convinced about the unregulated items that the majority of people wear...)

Some businesses may request that people wear them but I suspect that the reality is that in the interests of security, conflict avoidence and comfort, few will be that bothered.

memberofthewedding · 06/07/2021 22:33

If they do then many people will refuse to comply.

Jellykat · 06/07/2021 22:42

Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance are saying they will still be wearing masks indoors, but clearly a fair few of MNers know better then them Hmm

PTW1234 · 07/07/2021 05:06

I don’t think they will uturn but in real life I think you will still probably see a large amount of people still wearing masks.

It baffles me the how people are so angry about wearing a mask. Going forward I will wear one - especially on trains/tubes etc much preferable to directly inhaling a fellow computer’s BO. Will also wear one if I have cold symptoms or in high pollution areas, it’s basic hygiene and common place in many countries.

Stuffin · 07/07/2021 05:14

I hope not.

SpringRainbow · 07/07/2021 05:34

As far as I am aware masks only work if the majority are using them correctly. This has always been the biggest problem with mask, people just don’t wear them properly and/ or hygienically.

However, if we are going to have less mask wearing, even if it’s only in certain settings. They will mean they become even less effective.

I don’t really see how masks becoming personal choice will work when they need to be something the majority do in order to work effectively.

I live somewhere where people will do exactly as they are told, no more or less. So unless the businesses round here tell them you still need a mask, then masks will be pretty much useless where I am.

lifehappened · 07/07/2021 06:02

I might wear mine on the tube (which I hardly ever go on) but that's it. Silly I know just we have to do what we feel comfortable with. Even if they u turn that will be my stance. Over it

SoSadAboutMyDad · 07/07/2021 07:32

70% on the latest YouGov poll want to keep masks and a lot of newspapers seem to be criticising it. Also article now to say it’s against Sage advice. So much for following the science Confused I can see a u turn coming…

Don’t forget that YouGov is a very biased site

It would be like asking Mumsnet in March 2020 “Should people stay THE FUCK at home” you’d get at least 90% yes result.

@User135644

Damage is done now even if they do. Every other person on the train or in the shop will have the lanyard on, or just won't bother.
I doubt it. I have to wear the lanyard. Two weeks ago in a local shop, I was wearing my lanyard and in that time a total of 5 adults came into the shop brazenly mask free. I was fuming as I am exempt and have made the effort to show this while this entitled people think it doesn't apply to them. I don't think thru could care less about wearing a lanyard. Thet already think they are above wearing a mask and don't have to justify it.
