Holidays Abroad

Will you? Would you?

DH and the kids "desperate" for a holiday abroad like most people and he wants to book something for August, Canaries/Balearics probably. I'm a bit more cautious as I have been through this whole thing but my god a week in the sun with the kids sounds amazing! He would book it today but I don't know.. Not sure what I'm scared of, the plane maybe? Catching Covid on the way out there and then being unwell and also what happens if you catch it on the way out there? How do you get home?!

So holidays, are you going abroad? Would you if you had the opportunity?

Just to add we are both double jabbed, early 40's and early 50's no health conditions.

I wouldn't risk booking anything until after the accouchement which is due tomorrow. It looks like Boris isn't allowing the end to self isolation until after 16th August at the earliest for people within the UK. God knows when he'll let people abroad.

The airlines are going to start dropping like flies from lack of revenue.

SonnetForSpring · 06/07/2021 15:19

I personally wouldn't. I don't want to lose money with all the uncertainty.

motogogo · 06/07/2021 15:26

We are on the verge of cancelling September, they change the rules at short notice

MaryShelley1818 · 06/07/2021 15:28

We have Menorca booked for September and absolutely can't wait.
With a negative test needed there's more chance of me catching it in Lidl than on the plane.
Life needs to start moving on.

LondonMummer · 06/07/2021 15:30

We're off to Greece for a fortnight on Saturday and I cannot wait! We also went to Lisbon when Portugal was green (both trips were booked two years ago and postponed last year). You have to be super organised with forms and testing but travel always involves a risk of the unpredictable and the benefits for us as a family are huge. It's a personal choice but my goodness we appreciated our last trip SO much.

Cosybelles · 06/07/2021 15:31

Yes I would go, but would book the week before travel, to be more sure that it would be able to go ahead.

earsup · 06/07/2021 15:40

Re booked for Turkey for oct 10th from last year...stats in turkey are now very low so hoping we can go...not vaccinated as currently exempt but cant face the hassle of the tests...can get full refund 30 days before we go so may cancel..??....

User1234123 · 06/07/2021 15:42

Do it!

I'll be hopping about a lot from mid August to the end of the year, lots of catching up to do!!

I think Merkel backing down over an EU wide quarantine policy for Brits is a much bigger shot in the arm for travel than people are realising.

Be wise, book no prepayment hotels with free cancellation, make sure you're comfortable with the airline cancellation policy, check that you're happy with insurance coverage etc..

99victoria · 06/07/2021 15:43

We're in Kefalonia now- it's amazing. Been on the beach this afternoon. It was really quite hassle free - you just need to be organised with the right paperwork!
Flight only half full, straight through Gatwick in no time, only 2 cases in Kefalonia currently.
We're doing Test to release so hopefully only 6 days quarantine. It was a no brainer for us

ineedaholidayandwine · 06/07/2021 15:43

Yep hoping for the Balearics towards end Aug, will book v last minute though seeing as how quickly things change

vaxmeup · 06/07/2021 15:55

Would love to go away but won't book anything until the last minute. I'm not hopeful that other countries won't change their stance on letting people from England in if our cases rise to 100,000s per day...

Cuzco · 06/07/2021 16:01

I've just been to Majorca and I'd do it again tomorrow. My greatest unease was that tests weren't required prior to outbound travel then but they are now.

I thought I'd feel more nervous during the flight than I did but it was ok. I think airlines are saying they will still require masks regardless of future rules and I wouldn't use an airline that doesn't require them.

The big consideration for any travel at the moment is can you manage to quarantine on your return if the status is changed to Amber? If you can work from home etc. as we could, then I'd go for it.

IncessantNameChanger · 06/07/2021 16:01

If dhs work / boss was understanding maybe. But seeing as holidays need to be booked months ahead with work we cant do the last minute gamble.

I still think I'm going to wait for next year. But if you can, you only live once. I do think our numbers are going to get very high soon so I would worry rule might change fast

Abraxan · 06/07/2021 16:07

Only reason we haven't booked for the summer is the uncertainty and the constant checking of green/amber changes and dh not being able to quarantine in getting home.

We have a holiday abroad booked for October half term. I can only go if I don't have to quarantine. I need to make the decision 3 weeks before.

I'd like to think by then we could go but who knows?!

MaryShelley1818 · 06/07/2021 16:12

They're making a travel announcement later this week and it's expected that double jabbed will no longer have to isolate on return from Amber Countries (and their children).

IsabellesMissingSock · 06/07/2021 16:15

Yep - I am abroad at the moment. Having a great time Smile

zafferana · 06/07/2021 16:58

I would definitely wait until you hear when the quarantine is due to end for travellers returning from amber list countries (which is due to be tomorrow apparently). I wouldn't be booking today ...

As to whether I will/am going to go - we're hoping to. I am stressed out though by all the tests, the risk of testing positive and not being able to come home, the hideous 'passenger locator form', etc. All of it is quite shamelessly designed to deter anyone but the most careless, bold, determined or desperate!

WhiteChocTwix · 06/07/2021 17:06

Yes just come back from Greece so currently doing 10 days at home. It was absolutely fine. Just be on top of the paperwork and have a plan for all your tests, as others have said. It was blissful and I'm seriously missing it now we're back in the rain! So far so good, all tests to date are negative!

namechange90832 · 06/07/2021 17:14

We are booked with TUI for a holiday in August booked before Covid, balance paid. If we can go we will go, if not we can move it to next year. Not really thinking about it too much atm, would be very happy to go but likewise would happily take the £5k (as we'll save the money not saving for next year's holiday even if we don't get a refund).

ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 06/07/2021 17:15

I'm going on Friday. Was beginning to regret it due to the faff of tests and the amounting costs, my lockdown weight gain etc, not because I'm worried about getting ill. But looking at the rain outside I can't wait to just lie by a pool with my kindle after a shitty few months. Praying it all goes smoothly!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 06/07/2021 17:20

Am in Majorca at the moment and it's bliss. Currently on my sea view balcony with a cold glass of rosé. Do it!

herecomesthsun · 06/07/2021 17:28

would we? no

👋🏻 me too! Lovely isn't it! 🌞
zafferana · 06/07/2021 17:31

I'm envious of those of you on holiday (which is why I suspect DH and I will cross our fingers and go!). I just want to feel the sun on my skin, to hear the sound of cicadas chirping, to be abroad again. It's been 18 looooooong months for us.
