DD lied to get 2nd dose of vaccine early

Hi all,
Just wonder what others think of what has happened. Obviously too late to change things now, but I'm a wee bit peeved off with dd. She's 24 and had her first dose of pfizer here in Scotland a month ago.

Recently she was down visiting friends in England and as they were walking through the local town, they were approached by a vaccination helper asking if they needed to be vaccinated as the centre was very quiet and they had spare. DD didn't say that she'd already had a dose. She knew that pfizer is really meant to be given 21 days apart, and she was past that. She sat down for the vaccine and was asked if it was her first dose, as under NHS england guidance they are only allowed to give first doses to her age group. As NHS Scotland have a different system to NHS England, their software had no trace of her record. She told them it was her first dose. Then she rang up the NhS line, and had it changed to second dose by providing proof.

If the doses were going to waste, surely it was better that she had her second dose? It's only UK government rules that mean she was meant to wait 8 weeks rather than 4. She says she has read into it heavily, and there is no proof that the pfizer vaccine is meant to be better over longer dosing gaps.

I asked her if she felt bad for lying, and she said no she didn't as 1. the dose was going to waste and 2. there will be another dose for someone's second dose freed up. 3. she is moving home to live with me and her gran, who has just come out of hospital and is really ill, so she wanted to be fully vaccinated.

Yes, but OP said "Then she rang up the NhS line, and had it changed to second dose by providing proof."
Which suggests OP's DD has a valid covid pass somehow, which I didn't think was possible yet.

Happymum12345 · 02/07/2021 21:31

She shouldn’t have lied, they may well have given it to her anyway. I wouldn’t be cross with her though, what’s done is done and she there is more protection for her and her gran.

cate16 · 02/07/2021 21:37

They're actually offering 2nd after 21 days to young people in our area now.

rainbowunicorn · 02/07/2021 21:44

@toocold54

I thought it had to be a certain amount of time to make it work efficiently/check for side effects.

I’d be more concerned that’s she’s had both but her records don’t show this. Will she end up missing out on things that need both vaccinations even though she’s gone them. And how come when they didn’t put her number into the computer it didn’t show she she wasn’t had one. That’s quite bad if someone suffers from dementia or something.

Did you read the OP? She has had her record updated. It didn't show because Scotland has a completely separate system.
sashagabadon · 02/07/2021 23:00

Can’t see the problem myself

MissConductUS · 03/07/2021 00:07

Given the way the delta variant is spreading I think she made a perfectly sound choice.

MMMarmite · 03/07/2021 00:20

They offered us second doses after 4 weeks to use up some excess locally. I checked the evidence, and decided it's still inconclusive whether 3 weeks, 12 weeks or something in between is best. The most quoted study found more antibodies with a longer gap but more T cells with a shorter gap. I expect the "recommended" 8 weeks is as much about the UK's supply and demand, rather than the optimal timescale for an individual.

Torvean · 03/07/2021 00:28

Doses are not going to waster. Her dose was provided for her by Scottish NHS. She should have waited.

Any vaccines left over will go into the Covax scheme.

Covids definitely shown a wide range of ppl only think of themselves first, and screw any consequences.

redandwhite1 · 03/07/2021 00:36

Surely she'll need another one for her records to show she's had 2?!

FlyingBattie · 03/07/2021 00:58

Don't see a problem with it.
She didn't take the dose from anyone.

Where do you get your news, Tory HQ?

Loads are being wasted. Israel has got (another) 1m Pfizer they’ve let slide too close to their expiry, end of July.

We won’t take them because the JCVI won’t budge on the dosing. When blatantly 3-6 weeks would be fine for under 30s. We could take those 1m doses and use them. Or better yet we could send a few thousand of our vaccinators who are sitting around, to Palestine and vaccinate 20% of the country!

Bobholll · 03/07/2021 07:36

The 8 week gap push by the U.K. is entirely to do with the supply chain.. there isn’t enough to bring the gap closer. So obviously, they are having push to keep people 8 weeks apart.

In my area, last weekend GP’s were calling up anyone post 3 weeks Pfizer as well had surplus vaccine.

Take a look at Israel & UAE - they all have Pfizer 3 weeks apart, doesn’t seem to be a problem does it .. but suddenly in the U.K., oh no, 8 weeks is best when the supply needs it to be 8 weeks.. RIGHT. 😂

UAE have single figure deaths & case around 1000-2000 despite being mostly open. Israel have 0-2 deaths a week and cases in the 200-300’s.. also predominantly open as usual.

The US also having good results but a far more complex picture, vaccine uptake is mixed across states as are restrictions. But let’s take NY where the vaccine uptake is high. Cases in the 500’s & deaths in single figures..

Speaks for itself really.

I don’t condone lying but hardly the crime of the century is it. People were lying & saying they were carers to get vaccines when we were still trying to get through the vulnerable, that was shitty. But now, well, she’s just taken a dose from another young person who’ll get one anyway. We waste plenty, better it be used by your daughter!

PeppermintTea2021 · 03/07/2021 07:46

My partner is a St John vaccinator in the North West and they're pretty relaxed about who gets jabbed. I don't expect you'd need to lie as long as the minimum period had passed. I'm in my forties and got my second just walking into a centre on the off chance with my card. They were happy to do me just shy of eight weeks with AZ. They want to use the doses and the authorities seem to turn a blind eye which is something of a blessing. Imagine the waste otherwise.

Howcanthisbe123 · 03/07/2021 07:50

Clever gal!

HUCKMUCK · 03/07/2021 07:51

@MissMissTorrance

Justifying it by mentioning her gran doesn't make it any better. She was deceptive. The people who gave it were also in the wrong. No record of her yet give her the jab? What if she was mentally ill and had already had both vaccines? What if she lied but was medically advised not to have the jab but was desperate to have it? What if she'd already had her first dose so wasn't eligible for her second at this time?Hmm
Lots of people are having vaccines without being on the NHS system. Undocumented migrants and people who don’t have a GP. There’s also a fairly large number of people from other countries stranded here because of travel restrictions, they are being vaccinated too. There is a very clear steer from government that people should be able to access the vaccine without an NHS number so the vaccinators haven’t done anything wrong.

I can’t get worked up about this. She would have got the vaccine shortly anyway. It’s one less dose that they were able to use up and not waste.

FlowerArranger · 03/07/2021 08:02

@jewdee - Please can you elaborate:

As NHS Scotland have a different system to NHS England, their software had no trace of her record. She told them it was her first dose. Then she rang up the NhS line, and had it changed to second dose by providing proof.

What NHS line did your daughter ring, and how did they manage to change her vaccination record?

I, along with many people vaccinated abroad, am running in circles trying to get an 'officially vaccinated' status. The NHS person I spoke to said contact GP surgery - surgery says they cannot. It is very frustrating.

Etinox · 03/07/2021 08:14

@jewdee & @FlowerArranger following with interest as we can’t prove a one in Scotland, one in London ‘vaccinee’ 🤦🏻‍♀️

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 03/07/2021 09:17

I have seen this saying that there is better long term protection when the jabs are 8 weeks apart, how true it us who knows 🤷🏼‍♀️
I don't think your dd should have lied

DD lied to get 2nd dose of vaccine early
Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 03/07/2021 09:24

Sorry, i posted before finishing 🤦🏼‍♀️😂
I was going to say, i don't think your dd should have lied to get the vaccine. She should have been honest and she could have asked if they would have given her the vaccine anyway. I don't believe she needed to lie, ofcourse it's good she wanted to get the protection and to protect others but noone needs to lie for it. We all have to wait our turn. Deceiving someone to get something you want isn't the right way to go about things so i would be disappointed in any of my children doing that but it's done now so there's nothing you can do apart from tell her she shouldn't have lied.

MiddleParking · 03/07/2021 09:37

Apart from it being really weird to be ‘peeved off’ with your 24 year old daughter for something this minor and not your business, I don’t understand why you say you’re peeved off with her and then go on to list the reasons why she’s justified? Which she absolutely is anyway. I don’t think she had to lie though, I bet they’d have given her one if she’d explained.

JustATypo · 03/07/2021 09:38

I’m in Australia and I had my two Pfizer jabs 3 weeks apart.

TheUndoingProject · 03/07/2021 09:51

I think being proud of someone for lying is bizarre. I’d be really ashamed if one of my kids behaved like this.

What, got a little creative with the truth in order to use a dose of vaccine that would otherwise have gone to waste in order to protect themselves and others in the middle of a pandemic? It's not like she took the last custard cream and blamed the cat Grin
