DD lied to get 2nd dose of vaccine early

Hi all,
Just wonder what others think of what has happened. Obviously too late to change things now, but I'm a wee bit peeved off with dd. She's 24 and had her first dose of pfizer here in Scotland a month ago.

Recently she was down visiting friends in England and as they were walking through the local town, they were approached by a vaccination helper asking if they needed to be vaccinated as the centre was very quiet and they had spare. DD didn't say that she'd already had a dose. She knew that pfizer is really meant to be given 21 days apart, and she was past that. She sat down for the vaccine and was asked if it was her first dose, as under NHS england guidance they are only allowed to give first doses to her age group. As NHS Scotland have a different system to NHS England, their software had no trace of her record. She told them it was her first dose. Then she rang up the NhS line, and had it changed to second dose by providing proof.

If the doses were going to waste, surely it was better that she had her second dose? It's only UK government rules that mean she was meant to wait 8 weeks rather than 4. She says she has read into it heavily, and there is no proof that the pfizer vaccine is meant to be better over longer dosing gaps.

I asked her if she felt bad for lying, and she said no she didn't as 1. the dose was going to waste and 2. there will be another dose for someone's second dose freed up. 3. she is moving home to live with me and her gran, who has just come out of hospital and is really ill, so she wanted to be fully vaccinated.

And it is criminal. It’s self defeating wasting doses here whilst other countries are begging for them. There is a world outside the U.K.

There is no criminality going on, your head would explode if you knew how much wastage went on, there is always going to be wastage if you don't get that you are crazy.

And try working in the NHS you will see wastage on a huge scale.

NoSquirrels · 02/07/2021 18:37

Sounds sensible to me.

grapewine · 02/07/2021 18:38

Good for her.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 02/07/2021 18:42

I wouldn't care. Important to get vaccinated asap, I think.

AfterSchoolWorry · 02/07/2021 18:43

I don't understand what the problem is?

nordica · 02/07/2021 18:44

Why are people reacting like there is a vaccine shortage in the UK or that the OP's daughter somehow jumped the queue? Everyone over 18 who wants a vaccine has been able to book for a couple of weeks now, there are lots of walk-in clinics and those who want to move their 2nd jab earlier can also do so. If anything we need more people to come forward for their vaccines to have better protection for everyone by the 19th.

Treezan82 · 02/07/2021 18:45

Great job - we need as many doses in arms as we can get. She's one less person likely to pass it on now. I wish more thought like her.

Crunchymum · 02/07/2021 18:45

Personally I'm very uncomfortable with the notion of vaccines being handed out in the street. Especially as it's clear it isn't being monitored properly.

PicsInRed · 02/07/2021 18:49

@Boatie

Clever woman.
Yep, this.
toocold54 · 02/07/2021 18:51

I thought it had to be a certain amount of time to make it work efficiently/check for side effects.

I’d be more concerned that’s she’s had both but her records don’t show this. Will she end up missing out on things that need both vaccinations even though she’s gone them. And how come when they didn’t put her number into the computer it didn’t show she she wasn’t had one. That’s quite bad if someone suffers from dementia or something.

Abraxan · 02/07/2021 19:00

It was originally three weeks and many of those on the first groups were vaccinated with both doses after a three week wait.

It was changed initially to allow more people to have a first dose given to improve the overall effect of the vaccine across the country.

I had my second after 11 weeks but Dh was about 5.5 weeks. Both called by the GP Surgery at the sam time for second dose. I was group 6 so called before dh, who was the 45-50 age group. I will get a booster in the autumn but Dh won't be offered one.

Dd had her first 3 weeks ago tomorrow. She would like her second dose ideally before she goes to her first festival. The first festival date is 8.5 weeks after her first but she'd prefer to have it a bit earlier if she could to have better protection short term.

SingingInTheShithouse · 02/07/2021 19:26

I'd be very proud of her ingenuity & that she cares so much & wants to protect her gran. Wasted vaccine is criminal, not what she has done, breaking minor rules or not

Flowerlane · 02/07/2021 19:32

I’m shocked at how many people on here think this was fine and saying well done clever girl Confused

Pixxie7 · 02/07/2021 19:41

I don’t blame her at all for taking the vaccine however she shouldn’t have lied.

gibbertyofah · 02/07/2021 19:44

It's done now so it doesn't really matter. She's also an adult so doesn't really matter what you or anyone things about her choices.

But since you've asked - What's the point of it if it doesn't show on her record ? If she's that worried about her gran coming out of hospital and very ill at that, can't say it was sensible to travel to a place where they're touting vaccines on the street.

MollysMummy2010 · 02/07/2021 19:45

They are calling people here now after 8 weeks - I got my second last week, was due on July 17th I think. If they have them, use them.

Summerfun54321 · 02/07/2021 20:01

She’s been a tiny bit selfish but so have most of my friends and family in one way or another during this pandemic. Don’t hold a grudge over this.

Totallydefeated · 02/07/2021 20:15

Sorry, what’s your issue here? Why are you posting? Are you just after us fo judge your DD for what she’s already done?

Etinox · 02/07/2021 20:27

Good for her!!

MRex · 02/07/2021 20:33
  1. it's ridiculous that UK health systems are still not joined up in any way to check these things
  2. all centres should in my opinion have procedures to give the jab to any willing arm post 3 weeks Pfizer / Moderna or 8 weeks AZ, without anybody needing subterfuge.
  3. I strongly disapprove of lying and she might not have had the doses get joined up, BUT given she has, I'm really interested in how she went about getting that done. A poster was asking the other day about what to do with a DS at uni in Wales who had one jab in Wales and wants the second in England, so they could use the info.

Here’s the info for students (or anyone, tbh) on getting a second dose in a different location: FAQs.

Essentially, you can approach a GP in England, or go to a walk in. The NHS is working on getting the vaccine records to flow between Scotland/ England/ Wales and N Ireland but you can still get your second dose in a different UK nation even before the IT catches up.

gingergran · 02/07/2021 20:55

Our local pharmacy vaccination hub is giving vaccines to 16+ so they don’t go to waste

MRex · 02/07/2021 20:57

@Wigeon - that document still says they're "working on" connecting the records.

TillyTopper · 02/07/2021 21:02

Well done her!

Wigeon · 02/07/2021 21:04

I know, that’s the exact wording I put in my post! Grin
