Are lots of non-covid bugs going around where you live?

So many people I know have a nasty bug at the mo: coughing, fever, laid up in bed. All tested negative for covid (including PCR tests). One friend is convinced it’s covid despite this, the delta version evading tests. I think it’s just down to more people mingling and the usual bugs and viruses having a field day after being victimless for months.

Still, interested to know if others are finding this too?

Yup. We all have bad coughs, really chesty. My OH has boggy head aswell, youngest DS cough and snotty

edgeware · 28/06/2021 19:56

Both my preschooler and baby have had a nasty chesty virus, fever with phlegmy painful cough. Latsted quite a few days with both. Nursery were unsuperised, something like that is going around definitely. Not covid

HereWeGoAgain24 · 28/06/2021 19:59

Yes!

Me and DS both been so poorly this last week.

DS (14 mo) had a temp for the first few days and very sleepy, seemed to totally wipe him out.
Now he has a raging cough especially at night, it's awful. He coughs so much it sounds like he's going to vomit.

I've had awful nausea, fatigue, body aches, shivers, sore throat and now a nasty cough too. Tested on Saturday and was negative.

DH now starting to feel under the weather too 😞

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 28/06/2021 20:01

I’ve. Got a hideous sore throat-can’t swallow, temperature and achy as fuck. Don’t a test today, just waiting, think it’s more a throat infection.

Yellow85 · 28/06/2021 20:07

I also had an antigen test afterward which should I have not had covid in the last 6 months. So I can confirm my PCR test was accurately negative.

Crunchymum · 28/06/2021 20:12

DC2 had a cough mid May. Had a negative PCR test but she was quite poorly. Off her food, temperature, hacking cough and she missed 4 days of school as she just wasn't well enough.

DC3 had a cough early June but was well in herself (negative PCR test) and then DC2 got another cough (negative PCR and was well enough for school)

Spongeb0b · 28/06/2021 20:23

I don’t know how they could have got enough of a sample from my toddler to confirm he was negative. It was like trying to swab a slippery eel, it barely touched his nostril. I’m half expecting mine to come back positive - it could be a cold I suppose but it’s a very very long time since I’ve had a cold that’s knocked me sideways to this degree. If ever actually!

Makes you wonder if Delta is fully able to be picked up on tests especially LFTs and it’s giving people a false sense of security.

I was thinking the very same thing as I walked around the shops this afternoon- hell of a lot of hacking coughs, maybe it’s just my Covid senses in overdrive but there’s a lot of sick people out there.

yes

JaceLancs · 28/06/2021 20:49

Norovirus doing the rounds here - just as I was starting to feel more human again my hay fever is worse than I can remember for years

Nettleskeins · 28/06/2021 20:52

Yes

Kab129 · 28/06/2021 20:53

Yes! My daughter was poorly last week and tested negative. Lots of other children have the same. None have tested positive!

RichTeaCheddars · 28/06/2021 21:03

Yep, DP and baby DD all had awful colds last week. Baby was much better after a couple of days but DP and I developed sore throats and a cough. Now mine is a chest infection and GP gave me antibiotics today.

All tested negative for Covid.

I don’t know, given that there were 3 times more flu/pneumonia deaths last week than covid reminds us that there’s a whole host of other viruses still out there, couples with wrapping our immune systems in antibac for the last 18 months. I think we’ve just been programmed to assume covid over anything else.

And way more programmed to hear coughs and sneezes from a ten mile radius!!

Yep.

And 'norovirus'. Maybe. But Covid is known to cause gastric symptoms.

mejon · 28/06/2021 22:00

Lots in my DD's class and the rest of the primary school have had a snotty/sore throat/cough/generally unwell lurgy over the past week or so. All of them (including DD) have had PCR tests - as instructed by the LA/Health Board who've asked people to test with more general cold symptoms - all have come back negative.

Tealightsandd · 28/06/2021 22:02

Around 30% of PCR are false negatives.

Covidwoes · 28/06/2021 22:04

Definitely the case here. Toddler DD1 had a temp of nearly 40 a couple of weeks ago. Baby DD2 hasn't been well either and now has a cough. Both tested negative for Covid. DD1ms nursery key worker said they've had a lot of kids off with non Covid related bugs.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 28/06/2021 22:17

This is what happens when you lock people up for an extended period of time and their immune systems aren’t tested.

mynameiscalypso · 28/06/2021 22:28

@Tealightsandd

Around 30% of PCR are false negatives.
In total, there have been 10 kids at DS' nursery off with the same virus in the last 10 days, all tested, all negative (along with some parents and most of the teaching staff). If it was Covid, you'd still expect at least 7 of them to have a positive test on that basis. There are definitely things other than covid going round.
Tealightsandd · 28/06/2021 22:37

30% is already fairly high. But I suspect the Delta variant might have an even higher false negative rate.

Tealightsandd · 28/06/2021 22:41

It's also likely at least some of the parents from the nursery have confused the (pretty much useless) LFT with PCR.

Mrsbrand2019 · 28/06/2021 22:42

Yes 3 of us in our house have awful cold headaches and a god awful sore throat, exactly like razor blades!
Our 5 year old tested positive for Covid on Saturday but the rest of us tested negative….but we all have pretty much the same symptoms???

Thewiseoneincognito · 28/06/2021 22:47

The Kids have been back at school since March haven’t they and no one was locked up that I recall in the UK. Who exactly are you referring to?
mynameiscalypso · 28/06/2021 22:48

@Tealightsandd

Well, no, because you need to provide nursery with evidence of a negative PCR test for them to accept your child back (and for them to confirm that the child tested negative and so nobody has to isolate). They won't accept the result of a LFT if there are symptoms.
