Vaccine and TTC

I know I’ll get hate for this but I’m really in two minds about the vaccine.

I am 41. Wanting to try for a baby next spring. I’m really worried about the vaccine impacting this.

I’ve no problem with having the vaccine but I am so worried about not being able to have another baby as a result.

Spring is ages away! What are your specific concerns? Some of the long-term effects of Coronavirus could equally impact your chance of conceiving (I have a friend of a similar age who has been suffering from Long Covid for a year).

onelittleduckwithafeather · 23/06/2021 19:21

I have heard so many women say that their periods were altered after the vaccine which is obviously a worry given my age.

But I don’t think there’s been anything of substance to say that the vaccine effects fertility? Or has there? I’ve had my vaccine and have just started TTC.

onelittleduckwithafeather · 23/06/2021 19:41

I don’t know. The last thing I want is to cause trouble, but anecdotally so many women have reported changes to their cycle.

I would not have the vaccine if I wanted to conceive. You have to decide though whether you are worried about the 4k+ reports on periods being changed as a result of the jab. It is not clear if this affects fertility or not. Only time will tell.

Hax · 23/06/2021 19:46

Vaccine or no vaccine at 41 you should crack on not wait until next year.

onelittleduckwithafeather · 23/06/2021 19:47

I have a young baby already hax!

Is there any available info?

Well here is a big recentish discussion on the topic www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4184513-to-ask-for-your-opinion-on-covid-vaccine-and-fertility

Whatshouldicallme · 23/06/2021 20:44

Anecdotally I conceived 2 weeks after my second jab.i know quite a few others who have as well 🤷‍♀️

onelittleduckwithafeather · 23/06/2021 20:47

Thanks for both those answers

I haven't read much about the effects on periods but surely if you took a very large group of women, many will have this effect due to e.g. stress, peri menopause etc

I'd want to see a control group of unvaccinated women that is the same size as the group who were vaccinated; how many of these would say the same thing?

onelittleduckwithafeather · 23/06/2021 20:52

This is what worries me missing

I’d be more reassured if someone said “yes, it does seem to have a knock on effect but don’t worry, it’s temporary.’

As it is the narrative is ‘no nothing to see here’ but anecdotally that’s not the case.

Don’t have it then.
We won’t know long term effects for years so why risk it.

Walkaround · 23/06/2021 22:28

@onelittleduckwithafeather - don’t forget that actually getting covid can also have an effect on your periods, so avoiding the vaccine isn’t avoiding all risks. If not wanting to conceive until next year, I’d probably take the risk of the vaccine over the risk of not having the vaccine.

onelittleduckwithafeather · 24/06/2021 01:06

I’m not sure.

Being totally honest the vaccine would purely be for altruistic reasons. I’m not actually remotely concerned about catching covid myself.

OP posts:
snowy0wl · 24/06/2021 06:54

It’s interesting that you say you want to conceive but are not worried about catching Coronavirus. There is plenty of evidence emerging that suggests that catching Coronavirus whilst pregnant increases the chance of problems during a pregnancy, including miscarriage and early labour. This virus is not going away. It is something we are going to have to learn to live with.

cheezy · 24/06/2021 06:55

Not even long covid OP? Confused

onelittleduckwithafeather · 24/06/2021 07:00

I don’t consider myself to be a risk, and I’d quite surprised if I haven’t already had it. So no, it isn’t a concern. I will have the vaccine - when I’m still not sure - but it will be for the benefit of others and not myself.

Anecdotally I had me second jab beginning of June and am 5 weeks pregnant now. The first jab did affect my periods too, I skipped one and was really late on the next.

Backofbeyond50 · 24/06/2021 08:01

In that case just don't have the vaccine?

Eyedontknow · 24/06/2021 08:06

Another personal experience, I had my second vaccine in April and conceived in May. For me I decided the risks of getting COVID while pregnant were enough to wait until being fully vaccinated to start trying, but I conceived the first month. The pregnancy has unfortunately ended in miscarriage, but there isn't anything to indicate it was connected to the vaccine.

onelittleduckwithafeather · 24/06/2021 08:09

Thank you. That’s reassuring. I just wanted reassurance that any changes were temporary and they do seem to be Smile

onelittleduckwithafeather · 24/06/2021 08:10

I’m so sorry eye Flowers

I hope you conceive successfully soon.

Walkaround · 24/06/2021 08:10

@onelittleduckwithafeather - you do realise it is actually illogical to fear the vaccine but not the virus, given that both have reported effects on the thing you are worried about?! Either you are worried about your periods or you aren’t, surely?
