Vaccine and TTC

I know I’ll get hate for this but I’m really in two minds about the vaccine.

I am 41. Wanting to try for a baby next spring. I’m really worried about the vaccine impacting this.

I’ve no problem with having the vaccine but I am so worried about not being able to have another baby as a result.

As far as I know, periods stopping is not something that happens with covid. I’m saying as far as I know - I could be wrong.

In any event, I shared a household with someone who worked on a covid ward and who tested positive and also worked throughout, plus gave birth, so I’m probably a bit more blasé than some, admittedly. I just can’t get particularly anxious about it given the data for my age and sex. But not having another baby would be very upsetting and my age is already a consideration.

@onelittleduckwithafeather - you are wrong. Covid has been reported to affect periods. Try an internet search.

onelittleduckwithafeather · 24/06/2021 08:35

All I can find is info about the vaccine. Not covid itself.

I conceived two weeks after my second jab...with twins!
This is despite being told our chances of natural conception was virtually zero cos of husbands cancer and resulting v v low sperm count.

I think even those whose periods have been affected have only had it affected for a month not nearly a year. But the studies show the incidents aren't really any higher than you'd expect without it

Scottishskifun · 24/06/2021 08:43

@onelittleduckwithafeather

I don’t consider myself to be a risk, and I’d quite surprised if I haven’t already had it. So no, it isn’t a concern. I will have the vaccine - when I’m still not sure - but it will be for the benefit of others and not myself.
I didn't consider myself at risk either OP until I got covid! Was 34 fit, active and healthy! 3 months on I'm celebrating being able to walk 500m without breathlessness and reaching for an inhaler. Oh and I have continuous fatigue, fever cycles and struggle to do basic tasks with my toddler!

My cycle after covid was extremely messed up.

Cycle after vaccination no issues. Get the Pfizer one if your concerned. But please don't presume it's not going to knock you for 6 as its completely pot luck!

Walkaround · 24/06/2021 08:43

@onelittleduckwithafeather - you’re not trying very hard!!

It's been reported with many types of vaccine and virus that periods get affected. It's one of those things about how the female body works that's under-researched but anecdotally consistent. Google flu shot for similar comments to covid vaccines, and as others mentioned it's common with viruses, my period stopped for a few months from swine flu. The body gets stressed by having to create antibodies, hormones are impacted by that so periods are impacted. Long-term term fertility impacts are completely different from short-term hormones and seems unlikely as there is no reason for impact as well as no evidence of impact, with ongoing pregnancies among vaccinated women. It does look likely however that having the jab immediately after a period ends leads to fewer side effects, so you might want to bear that in mind.

onelittleduckwithafeather · 24/06/2021 09:10

I suppose the difference is I’ve almost certainly had coronavirus and had no changes to my periods, whereas the vaccine is a bit unknown. I’m genuinely seeking information and reassurance thoug, not a stupid bunfight (I don’t mean you bells and great news about your twins!)

I really wouldn’t - if you read the threads about the periods issue. It seems that fertility is affected TBH as period disruption is fertility

Sunshine4you · 24/06/2021 09:18

The Jab doesn't stop you catching the virus ...it just can help you not get very sick... However vaccinated people still spread the virus.

I'm not getting the vaccination.... We are TTC next year.

@onelittleduckwithafeather - I had no periods for 3 years when I was younger. Nobody identified a plausible reason for this - I wasn’t anorexic, I didn’t have any type of eating disorder, I wasn’t overweight or underweight, my weight remained consistent, I was not going through a stressful time for 3 whole years, I was not exercising excessively, I did not have polycystic ovaries, I did not have a pituitary tumour, etc, etc. Then my periods started again. No changes whatsoever in my life or health to explain that either. I had no problems conceiving - hadn’t wanted to get pregnant when I had amenorrhoea. I conceived at first attempt on both occasions, despite being more stressed at the time I first got pregnant than at any other point in my life. The more stressed I am, the more regular my periods are. I think the medical community has very little interest in the myriad possible causes of menstrual disruption and comes up with all sorts of patronising and stock responses to “explain” the causes. However, I nevertheless don’t think the vaccine has a long term effect on fertility. It is hardly surprising if it has a temporary effect in some people, however.

onelittleduckwithafeather · 24/06/2021 09:37

Temporary is fine, although I am a bit worried after reading another thread and it seems some women have been really unwell. I have a six month old to look after so that’s a massive worry Sad

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 24/06/2021 10:25

I wish I'd never had it done. I had a miscarriage after the first one, and the second one has stopped my periods altogether. Very worrying for someone who's gone through 15+ years of infertility and miscarriages

Whatshouldicallme · 24/06/2021 11:33

It's obviously a personal decision but please do research the effects of COVID infection on pregnancy, especially during 3rd trimester, before you decide.

Pregnant woman are considered vulnerable during every stage of pregnancy, and extremely vulnerable during the third trimester even if they are young and have no other preexisting conditions. Although you may be in a low risk group now, the immune systems of pregnant women are not as strong as women who are not pregnant and the baby places strain on your body in ways you wouldn't necessarily expect. I did exercise regularly before pregnancy, I'm only in my second trimester but am now noticeably out of breath sometimes just walking down the street. I definitely wouldn't want anything that could compromise my breathing as it's already not what is was! I definitely feel much more vulnerable being pregnant.

I would be more worried about looking after a baby if you get covid then from the vaccination tbh!

3 months down the road after catching covid and I am up to a few hours being able to care for my toddler! With new variants it's very difficult to tell how your body will respond.

I had a sore arm with Pfizer for 2 days that was it. Also the statement that vaccine doesn't stop you catching it is incorrect. It doesn't prevent it in all cases no but has shown a reduction in likelihood.

There are some good scientific articles on the zoe app suggest that you go read them as covid in 3rd trimester is increasing the chances of still born and premature births
