60,000 people per day - and our kids? :(

It was announced last night that under a "special and exciting" deal, London (Wembley) would play host to the semi-finals and final of the Euros now - 60,000 people at each match, using 80%+ of capacity. Straight away we had the Germans, EU and the WHO question the decision. But, here we go again...

..we are told that everyone will be checked for two vaccinations before entry but, come on, all those of us that have attended football internationals before know that it usually becomes a free-for-all (even if not admitted) beyond a certain point.

So 180,000 people into Wembley is fine, but my kids have had their end of year activities cancelled and my DD just had her "welcome" day to her new school cancelled. Then we had a case in the school last week, sending everyone back to school from home.

Is anyone else confused? Is it just me? WTF decision making is going on now. We are only having this upswing because the Government allowed another 30,000 back from India while it hesitated again. Then of course we welcomed the G7 and all of their people. Now the Euros. But our kids are still put through the wringer - again.

I am a football fan and want this all to go back to normal, but I feel like we shoot ourselves in the foot (and face) every chance we get.

Well the key difference youve mentioned yourself. People at the euros will be vaccinated. Children are not yet able to get the vaccine.

So yes its unfortunate but as the world opens up for vaccinated people, children will fall into the unvaccinated category and still have to deal with measures around that.

Dragonn · 23/06/2021 08:52

We're isolating for 10 days, DD home schooling, trying to work and I just feel shot this time. Completely flat.

Carameljack · 23/06/2021 10:13

Children must not be expected to deal with measures around being unvaccinated. It could be years before young children get vaccinated. We will have a generation of children with half an education and MH issues from being cooped up at home for 10 days with a minutes notice.
I agree OP it’s scandalous that all these people can be packed into Wembley and the VIPs coming over with no quarantine when the kids are missing sports days, leaving assembly, transition days etc.

Snap. It's scandalous. I'm so sad for children, I hoped that they would have someone in government advocating for them.
hamstersarse · 23/06/2021 10:17

When did you ever think anyone actually gave a shit about children throughout all of this?

They closed schools unnecessarily

They've cancelled exams

University students have been thrown under the bus

They even closed down outdoor playgrounds

They stopped all sports for children for the best part of a year (while carrying on adult professional sports)

I am only surprised it has taken this for people to notice

Thewiseoneincognito · 23/06/2021 10:17

Because they don’t care what you think? They clearly do not care about the children, that has been crystal clear from day 1. The lack of urgency around mask wearing in schools, the waiting until the last minute to close schools, the lockdown school meals debacle. Why are you even remotely surprised they’re having the boys around for the footy at Wembley?

Unfortunate?

This is the sort of attitude that stinks

There is a miniscule risk to children from Covid-19, yet they are the ones who have to bear the brunt on their freedoms.

I'm sorry but that is beyond selfish to expect them to carry on like this

Unfortunate Grin Grin Grin

Really.

Firstly, I don’t think that is the reason actually. If the government truly a shit about covid spread in schools, amongst children, then they would have funded proper covid measures in schools and closed schools sooner.

They did neither of those things.

This government prioritises profit first and foremost above all.

I’ve written to my MP about this because it’s is disgusting. She doesn’t give a fuck being a Tory but I did it anyway.

I couldn't agree more. My DD is going to choose her secondary school based on virtual tours of prospective schools and I won't be able to see my I.mediate family abroad for another year, while these mass events are allowed to go ahead and pubs and city centres are rammed with people. But it's precisely what you can expect from a populist governmentvthat only ever tries to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
PensionsYes · 23/06/2021 10:30

Tories... profit is always the objective. Always.

Baileysforchristmas · 23/06/2021 10:32

@ChatterMonkey that makes unfair 2 tier system, children locked away forever.

Landslidelife · 23/06/2021 10:33

Yanbu my Dc1 had not had face to face health care since January 2020 (previously had 3 monthly checks) - been told hopefully be seen in person in 4 months.
Dc3 is finally being seen in person at the hospital on Friday only due to a deterioration in health. I can't get Dc3 the support for mh (unrelated to the pandemic).
I must say our gp has been excellent throughout.
I've been waiting 23 months for major surgery the hospital has had no more than 16 covid patients (4 ventilated) in 4 months. But they still haven't started non emergency surgery.
Surely education and health should come before money.

FloraFauna27 · 23/06/2021 10:50

You are totally right. I’m not allowed to go and watch my daughter in the egg and spoon race on the school field with ample space for social distancing, yet some lager filled yobs can throw themselves at each other in a busy stadium when their team scores a goal. It’s fucking shit.

Haenow · 23/06/2021 10:58

I remember when playgrounds were locked but they started opening bloody golf courses….!

Delatron · 23/06/2021 11:00

Yes it’s an absolute joke. There needs to be an advocate in government for all these children. I’ve read some are on their 5th isolation. That’s 50 days out of a year unable to go out and do exercise/socialise and all the things they love. Prisoners probably get more exercise. (Unless you have a big garden). So bad for their mental and physical health. It’s an utter travesty. Yet pop a football shirt on and hey presto you can travel, sing, dance, hug.if I had a wedding planned right now I’d be fuming.

A few of us on another thread will be writing to local mps. Some already have. They may not care but if enough of their consistency write to them....We have to do something.

Kittyswhiskers · 23/06/2021 11:01

It’s a fucking joke is what it is. Our government have treated children SHAMEFULLY and I hope at the next elections the Tories are kicked on their arses to the kerb.

Clickbait · 23/06/2021 11:02

It's totally unfair. Our kids are missing out on their education, their sport, their social lives. But it's all ok for football players and fans Angry

EduardoStobarto · 23/06/2021 11:02

Snap, my child's first sports day today in a huge open field and plenty of space to distance but we are not allowed to attend, so sad i get to miss out on this and bloody furious 60,000 people are allowed the luxury of watching a football match, I hate the lack of fairness

ComDummings · 23/06/2021 11:03

It’s absolute shit. The whole thing is making me angry now, cramming people into stadiums while, at the same time, denying education and sports to children. Not allowed to attend sports day, or school transition days, have to isolate if someone in the bubble has covid even if they’ve not been near them. It’s a fucking joke. What can we do about this though?

Whatafool123 · 23/06/2021 11:03

I am completely with you OP. The whole thing stinks - I was so angry last night I couldn't sleep. It is one rule for them and another for us plebs - the government has absolutely no respect for us, which has been clear all the way through.

Whatafool123 · 23/06/2021 11:04

This, in spades.
Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 23/06/2021 13:32

Totally agree it stinks to high heaven

Fortyfifty · 23/06/2021 13:58

I'm with you OP. Last summer we accepted these things. As we locked down after Christmas, and our children were taught from home until late March, the only consolation was the thought that this summer would be more normal. But it is almost worse. Watching adults of the country get on with what's normal in their lives while children and young people are having what should be normal parts of their lives cancelled is hard.

Also, anything that has an effect on children, has an effect on their families. So much cancelled that won't be repeated. Plus the endless isolations. Its impossible to make any certain plans whilst children and young people live with that threat. Has the government forgotten that families exist (and vote!) - so removed are those Estonian men from the domestic sphere?

Write to your MP. www.theyworkforyou.com

60,000 people who will not be from the participating countries. Apart from expats living in the UK.
