School not accepting LFT?

WaitroseAldi · 17/06/2021 07:49

Dd was sent home on Monday with hayfever. She had 2 LFT and they were negative. Her brother is in the same school. On the Tuesday they said he wasn’t allowed to go until they both had proper tests. I only had one so sent dds off on Tuesday but still not heard anything. They both did LfT last night and still negative.

Dd is missing school desperately and doesn’t cope well without his routine. DD is fine just sneezing but better after some hayfever medication.

I hope they accept dds test results to allow ds back at school 😩

Legally, the school can ask you to get them a PCR test but cannot enforce it and also cannot demand to see a negative result.

CarrieBlue · 17/06/2021 08:54

[quote TooHotSendHelp]@CarrieBlue but they're asking for a negative result from her ds because her dd (presumably) has symptoms, that bit's not correct.

Depends if it’s a surge area. The school is only trying to protect others after all, so I really don’t get the issue, you have to isolate regardless if waiting for results.

TooHotSendHelp · 17/06/2021 09:01

@CarrieBlue

We are in a surge area and are being asked to do PCRs only when in contact with a positive case not 'just' symptoms. (Separate to the community testing)

If other places are different then that's an issue as surely it should be the case across the board?!

Rillington · 17/06/2021 09:05

Both tests are the same procedure. It isn't traumatic.

JanFebAnyMonth · 17/06/2021 09:36

It does depend on what area you’re in - some surge testing areas seem to be requesting that whole families test if one has symptoms. Don’t know if schools can insist though.

JanFebAnyMonth · 17/06/2021 09:38

@TooHotSendHelp can you post something that advises that? The National advice is still to test if you have one of the three main symptoms.

Why should it be the same across the board? You should follow local guidance and in a surge area more testing makes sense.

TooHotSendHelp · 17/06/2021 09:45

Because why wouldn't it be across the board if you're in a surge area? Why would you say more testing makes sense but then say it shouldn't be across the board? Surely the sensible thing would have the same advice in all surge areas?

DumplingsAndStew · 17/06/2021 09:54

What do you mean by saying you "only had one" test? With PCR, you order or book a test when it's needed, not just have them sitting around at home Confused

Helenluvsrob · 17/06/2021 09:59

Those saying “ get a letter from the Gp “

Only a fool would write a letter to say “ it’s ok they can sniff enough in school they have that fever “. No way you can say they don’t aldi happen to have caught Covid especially as the delta variant seems to be common in school age kids AND present very much as cold / hay fever ie runny nose / sore throat more than fever

Geamhradh · 17/06/2021 10:02

I'm surprised anywhere still accepts LFTs. Totally unreliable.

WaitroseAldi · 17/06/2021 11:49

Well that was more stressful than doing it at home! She freaked out, had a huge nose bleed and just sobbed. They gave us a home testing kit instead.

We have them at home due to my job.

Its the same test!!! Did she freak out at all the LFT you made her do?

WaitroseAldi · 17/06/2021 11:58

I know it’s the same test! But being in the comfort of your home compared to a sterile scary white room is abit different for a 4 year old!

These are the faq where I live, the close contacts of the people I know that have tested positive have all been requested to test.

Whatever9999 · 17/06/2021 12:41

@Yellowbrickrobe

It’s not remotely traumatic and is exactly the same as an LFT. Wondering how we have got this far into the pandemic and people STILL don’t know the correct procedure.
Try telling my 7yo that. He ended up vomiting all over the car at the thought of the swab in his throat and screamed the whole way through having his nose swabbed.

It's disgusting that we're putting children through this for hayfever

annlee3817 · 17/06/2021 13:11

It's not the same at the test centre, some children will naturally be better being tested in the comfort of their own home.

OP we got our posted results back the following morning, so for us it was just as quick as the walk in test centre.

My DD has allergy related asthma and regularly gets a chesty cough and cold like symptoms, so she's used to the tests now, we're currently waiting on PCR test results, I'm concerned they'll come back inconclusive, she didn't get on with the back of the throat at all and only managed a second up the nose, so we repeated it on each nostril three times in the hope it was enough 🙈

annlee3817 · 17/06/2021 13:12

Meant to say she's used to the test but still gets upset

WaitroseAldi · 17/06/2021 14:14

As if the test results have just came through from the one I did on Monday, she’s negative!

OP posts:
looptheloopinahulahoop · 17/06/2021 14:27

Well you knew she would be negative because she has hay fever. The pollen count has been really high this week.

im2sad · 17/06/2021 15:41

Glad it was negative and I glad some posters and their children don't find it traumatic. I'v only had to do it once for 5yr old DD when she was sick once (school made me lie to get the test last year), she was trembling in the test centre. Never seen her like that ever and now if she hears someone talk about testing she looks very nervous.

Well yes, but now no one is allowed to have any other illness, even hay fever.
