Anyone had Delta variant in household?

I know this is a how-long-is-a-piece-of-string question really, but be interested to know people's experience of COVID in the family in last 3-4 weeks (ie, likely to be delta). How quickly did it spread to others? Did everyone get it? What were symptoms like?

DS (9) had fatigue and very high temperature yesterday, testing today - he hasn't got up yet, but I checked on him in the night and he was still hot and restless so I suspect he is not going to be A-OK this morning and it's not just the hot weather. We are suppsed to have DD's bat mitzvah (already postponed from last year) in just under a fortnight, but if this is COVID, from what I can tell from all I've heard of Delta, we're not likely to avoid at least one other family member catching it.

DH and I are 2 months into 1st vaccine but not had 2nd, DD obviously hasn't had vaccine.

I'm not worried anyone will be seriously ill, but I'll be gutted to miss synagogue service and so much work will be wasted - we have a Zoom celebration lined up for this weekend, it's supposed to be professionally filmed but obviously they won't be able to come here if anyone's ill, so hopefully we'll be well enough to DIY a simple one ourselves. We do have a small party planned, but it's fairly simple and we can postpone for another day as it's at a family home.

I know of two families in the last month where kids brought it home from school and gave it to adults. All 4 adults were 2-3 weeks past dose 1. 1 was 1 week past dose 2. All were ill enough to have to have at least a couple of days off work.
They may just have all been unlucky though.

I would work on the assumption that if it is Covid it's likely to be the delta variant and it's likely at least one of you will get it. Then anything better is a happy surprise.

I tested positive last sunday, the 6th june. I lost taste and smell, had a bit of a sniffle, I tested because I had a temperature of 38, but that was gone by monday. I have had the occasional cough. My husband caught it off me, but my children 7 and 11 were both negative after pcr tests. Husband just has a cough. We both had 1 dose of AZ vaccine back in april.
I am in an area where the delta variant is rapidly spreading, so it must be that variant. If I hadn't had a temperature, I would have thought I had a cold. I feel absolutely fine, my husband worked from home all week from 8-midnight some days. He's tired but also fine, just coughing.

Frazzled2207 · 14/06/2021 09:09

daft question perhaps but do we get told what we have?
I did hear at the beginning of the delta variant that those ill with delta variant were getting 'enhanced contact tracing' whatever that is, but I suppose that has been abandoned if basically almost everyone has it?

Perhaps the guys at T&T will know, though I think most (not all) postitive cases are sequenced and the sequencing takes longer than the simple positive/negative

cptartapp · 14/06/2021 09:13

DS1 tested positive two weeks ago. Very high temp, cough, loss of taste and smell. In bed for three days. Within 2-3 days DS2 and double vaccinated DH (AZ) tested positive too. Similar symptoms.
I've had Pfizer and Covid last year and was completely fine.
NW hotspot.

Echobelly · 14/06/2021 11:13

Thanks - hopefully a false alarm as DS seems fine today, but was worth testing, should get an answer tomorrow. Then start praying we steer clear for next week and a half.

@frazzled2207
Almost all cases in the UK (90%) are now Delta, so if recent probably Delta.

i know that but am intrigued as to if people are actually told.

We are on another isolation. This is really stupid now. A close contact apparently tested positive so a large number of kids home. Despite doing LFT and just sent off a PCR (yes you can get them without any symptoms) it will be negative. Other parents the same bored to death of this constant ridiculous disruption. No one in the local hospital for weeks and weeks now so why keep sending kids home!
The system is so over the top that kids get sent home and despite negative cannot return - boring and useless and needs revising so children can learn at school.

No one in hospital no deaths - just people with LFT get false positives again. Give it a few days and might be told to go back to school again!
Stupid and pointless now

it's really good that your local hospital has no cases. Surely you'd want to keep it that way? The school self-isolation cycle is a nightmare and it'll be great when that's over, hopefully after the summer holidays. I'm so pleased to hear that there are still areas where there's nobody in hospital, it must be such a relief to everyone.

BBC is reporting that, for younger people in particular, Delta is more 'cold like' with runny nose, sore throat and headache.

I just saw this too - those symptoms also overlap with hay fever, just to make it even more confusing! I have a slightly runny nose most of the time at this time of year!
SqueezeMeBakingPowder · 14/06/2021 13:49

I wasn't told what variant, but I know it's rife round here, so just assumed it was delta I have. I tried to google how to find out what strain I had, but can't find any information on how to.

SqueezeMeBakingPowder · 14/06/2021 13:53

I certainly felt like I had a cold, I'm 46.

BarbarianMum · 14/06/2021 14:14

My nephew had cv 2 weeks ago. Wasnt very ill and didnt spread it to anyone in his household except 1 brother (most but not all the household were vaccinated).

trying29 · 14/06/2021 14:18

we had it. My 6 year old brought it home from school - had a very very heavy cold but no other symptoms. me and his dad had first jab in march - we were both floored for a couple of weeks with bad flu and loss of taste and smell. Son tested positive on the sunday, we were negative on the monday but started to get symptoms that night. Tested positive on the wednesday. My younger son tested positive on teh Friday - also a heavy cold. Confirmed delta from PHE

trying29 · 14/06/2021 14:19

Also to note - we did not once test positive on a LFT. We tested positive on PCR tests only. Even once we got our positive results - LFT still showed negative. So how many people are being reassured by these tests?!

BarbarianMum · 14/06/2021 14:25

They're researching that now @trying29 Dh and I were asked last week to do paired pcr and lft tests so results can be compared.

They are unreliable in the other direction too. There have been two positive LFTs in my ds’s school year (year 7) and both were followed by a negative PCR.
Chailatteplease · 14/06/2021 14:33

That’s odd. I thought there wasn’t a false positive risk with LFT’s, only false negative s?

CasparBloomberg · 14/06/2021 14:36

We were confirmed Delta cases.
DH confirmed day 1, Ds (15) positive day 4, I was positive day 5. DD (12) never got it, tested her with LFT daily, plus she had 3 PCR as part of test and trace requests.

Ps we only tested positive on LFT after testing positive on PCR.

CasparBloomberg · 14/06/2021 14:39

Positive all adults one vaccination. All household had covid early last year too.
Symptoms like a fairly unpleasant cold this time. Last time was like a flu that floored me.

spacefrog35 · 14/06/2021 14:45

False negatives are the more likely 'false' result but there is a possibility of false positives albeit a small one.

Where people are getting negatives on LFT until after they've tested positive on a PCR I believe that the PCR can detect a smaller amount of virus, hence it being the 'more reliable' test. As another poster said I know they're looking at what they might be ale to shift up in testing/isolations by running studies on isolating vs PCR Vs LFT and so forth.

We have close friends who are currently all isolating. 3 of 4 are positive and symptoms are, as described above, a heavy and unpleasant cold. The only one with a fever is the littlest (nursery age)

trying29 · 14/06/2021 14:56

dont forget though LFTs are only 50% reliable and have been banned in the US due to their unreliability

I had those symptoms when I had covid (kent variant) in December. I wouldn't have known it was covid if I hadn't done a test because I was flying for work.
HairyFloppins · 14/06/2021 16:19

My covid also felt like a bad cold in December as well. It was when the Kent variant was rife in our area.
