Told to self isolate when on a short break.

I'm planning to go on a two day city break by train soon. What happens if you're tracked and traced when you're away? What if your accommodation is booked by someone else during the isolation period you're meant to be doing ? Would you be allowed to travel home to isolate there?

I can't afford 10 nights in a hotel in London.

Sorry, yes, I should have put quarantining

mibbelucieachwell · 07/06/2021 22:38

There are financial implications of going home straightaway. It would mean buying another train ticket at short notice for starters.

Yep, very expensive.
mibbelucieachwell · 08/06/2021 07:01

I mean if you get a call from Track and Trace. Not from the app.

@ArgyleIsle

Working amongst a range of schools - I use my app and self isolate when needed...to keep your children safe.
There has been 0 children dying from covid in a country where schools have been open and students and teachers have been maskless since March 2020... But thank you for your service...

"As pps have said, you can use public transport on day 0, you can go to a test centre or take your swabs to the post office on days 2, 5 and 8, and you can go out to shop for emergency food/medication. You can not go to other peoples homes (except in an emergency (not defined) and you can not receive visitors - though others in your home can. There are also other exceptions eg mental health related."

Really? I thought I'd be stuck in my flat and they sent a volunteer with shopping? My friend was offered that.

This isn’t quite correct. I was contacted on Sunday by a friend I’d met on Friday who tested +ve on her Test at home. I self isolated immediately. Then yesterday morning I received a text from Track and Trace telling me to isolate for 10 days from Friday. 30 minutes later they phoned me and went through all the info, and asked me to book a test which I did, and had it yesterday lunch time. They made it very clear I was not to leave the house for 10 days except to get a test. If the test is negative I still have to complete the 10 days isolation.
UnmentionedElephantDildo · 08/06/2021 07:49

You go straight home.

You use published transport only when there is no alternative.

And then you keep,as far away from people as possibly, wearing as good a mask as you can get hold of, and touching as little as you can (use sanitiser liberally)

Get shopping delivered - there are loads slots available normally now, plus all the extra services that have sprung up, (direct from shops and also from suppliers like Deliveroo).
@ostara212 oh yes, true. If someone was to give fake details (not advising or condoning this) then the chances of getting a track and trace call out of the blue would be quite small I think? If I knew someone well enough to be in close contact then I'd presume they would tell me about a positive test before T&T got round to calling me. The only exception might be a beauty salon or hairdresser?
Who are you giving fake details to and why? If yo u give your details to a venue or check-in via the app, and there is then a covid outbreak at the venue, the details will be used to send an alert to people who were at the venue at the same time, advising that they may have been in contact with a positive case. It won't tell them to self isolate. Specifically it may do the below:

"the alert will contain public health advice, such as what an individual should do when displaying COVID-19 symptoms, the need to maintain social distancing and a reminder to wash hands frequently. If necessary, individuals will be advised to book a test"

That's info for details given manually. If you checked in via the app, the info says the alert will just tl you to follow current public health guidance.

It's the contact tracing in the app (which you can turn off) and someone giving your name your Test and Trace as a close contact which could result in you being told to self isolate.

@UnmentionedElephantDildo did you read the post where OP said that return train fares are now very expensive?
Yes I get the memo about what one should do, but practically what sense does it make to head onto a busy train when if contagious, likely most contagious, rather than sit it out in current spot? Deliveries etc can also be made to holiday locations.

Not everyone lives in a city where you have all these delivery services Hmm.
BoomChicka · 08/06/2021 08:27

Richard, I didn't say I was, I said people do give fake check in details and avoid the app, to reduce the chance of an unexpected phone call or alert.

RuggerHug · 08/06/2021 10:28

Then you use your head and ask a friend or neighbour to pick up what you don't have in and leave it on the doorstep. It's not rocket science.

Don't have any such. But then, I don't have the app and if had to use it would use it on a burner phone that gets conveniently lost or broken. Sorted. That doesn't take rocket science, either.
UnmentionedElephantDildo · 08/06/2021 10:34

If you don't have delivery services, then you ask neighbours or the council's covid service, or other voluntary services. There are very few places with no delivery services at all.

And OP said that remaining at destination would be unaffordable, so the extra train fare might well be the lesser of evils.

My friends and neighbours would all laugh their heads off at locking myself away after I'd had two jabs months ago. Rural councils, services are slim on the ground. This is ridiculous.

But again, best way for OP is to get a burner phone to use on the break. They're cheap as chips. Then voila, it got lost, broken, wet . . . And go on about your way, enjoy yourself!

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 08/06/2021 10:40

Glad I don't have neighbours like that!

I had hoped most people would understand contact isolation by now.

I love my neighbours! They're quiet and don't give a fuck what other people are doing as long as they're not being disturbed. Bliss.

There's a difference between not understanding and finding something to be utter bunkum.

Get that burner phone, OP! Any shop will have them with free SIMS/PAYG. Charge it up, put on a tenner's worth of credit, set off, use that for all this ridiculousness and don't give it a second thought. Have FUN!

RuggerHug · 08/06/2021 10:45

So fuck everyone else who hasn't been as lucky as you to be vaccinated then, you're just not going to be inconvenienced. Charming. Do you realise how much of a dick you're coming across as?

Plenty of folks aren't buying into this anymore, Rugger. It's just how it is. The threads on here alone are legion. Funny how no one ever did this with influenza or norovirus or anything else.
RuggerHug · 08/06/2021 10:51

You're talking about what you would do, not anyone else. Strangely enough I also wouldn't be acting like a dick with influenza or any other virus I could spread.

That's good for you then. I had no idea that there was track and trace for influenza or any other virus. Maybe we should all live in terror of all of them and have track and trace and self isolating for every single one. Two of my children caught chickenpox. Why on Earth don't they close the whole class when there's a case of that, or any other virus besides Covid19?

I'm going on a short break myself but driving there and we'll not be going out except to fell walk and driving to those destinations as well so thankfully avoiding all this track and trace crap.

Watermelon222 · 08/06/2021 11:00

This has been part of the problem all along, that the practicalities of following the isolation rules are not fully thought through and measures not put in place for support. That includes employers who are not supportive.

Now they are pushing for surge testing of asymptomatic people and also testing for release early from quarantine they need to consider the implications of someone testing positive from this. Eg if they have been to Boots or the post office for a test. Or if they have gone on holiday or to work on the train etc.

It’s totally impractical most of the time to go straight home unless you have driven yourself somewhere! And there has been no advice about what your rights are if you’re already away!

RuggerHug · 08/06/2021 11:05

If you need an app to tell you how to do everything in your life because you can't follow logic or common sense I think you have much bigger issues.
