DH has purple rash 3 weeks after AstraZeneca vaccine

unsure20223 · 06/06/2021 17:12

DH had AstraZeneca jab 3 weeks ago today.
This morning, purple spots have appeared on his chest like a small rash. He says they are tender to the touch.
He rang 111 and they rang back and told him to go to A&E.
He's just got back and said the doctor there told him it's unexplained and that there's nothing to worry about. The doctor actually apologised to him that 111 had sent him there! He said that if it gets worse then to see his GP tomorrow.
I'm concerned as we both think the doctor was quite dismissive. When you read side affects of the vaccine, the purple rash is a rare symptom of blood clots.
I said I think he should go to another hospital for a second opinion.
Am I overreacting? Should we wait till tomorrow to see what happens with the rash?
Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Did they do any tests? Take his blood?

Onceuponatime1818 · 06/06/2021 17:15

He have a headache?

They didn't do any tests at all!

He have a headache?
He doesn't have a headache, just feels tired and mentioned he felt slightly out of breath earlier this morning.

I wouldn’t take any chances and would go to another hospital to be checked.

MRex · 06/06/2021 17:26

Is it a rash with actual spots, or is it coloured marks on the skin that look like tiny bleeds? You can look up lots of images of thrombocytopenia online to see if it looks like that. If it does then go back to A&E. If it's spots instead then just see the GP tomorrow.

wetwiped · 06/06/2021 17:33

Under the circumstances I don't think it would be unreasonable to go back and ask them to do bloods to rule out any potential blood clotting problems following the vaccine. I would definitely want a second opinion.

Definitely not spots. They look more like bruising. Not sure if you can see clearly in the pics.

Ok, unless a doctor turns up here saying otherwise, it doesn't seem unreasonable to ask for blood tests to be run, just in case.

PuzzledObserver · 06/06/2021 17:48

Second opinon. Blood test will show whether he has low platelets or not. Breathlessness is one of the symptoms.

SecretDoor · 06/06/2021 18:00

I would be concerned that his rash is bleeding under the skin called thrombocytopenia.
I think he should have had blood tests as per this guidance

SecretDoor · 06/06/2021 18:02

He should go back to ED especially if it's getting worse or he other symptoms of breathlessness, chest pain etc

Agreed. I give these vaccines and have to warn people what to look out for. Maybe that A&E Dr hasn't been keeping up with advice, I'd have expected blood tests to be done.

Cornettoninja · 06/06/2021 18:11

Are you within comfortable travelling distance of another hospital? If so I’m another one saying go and insist on basic tests at the very least.

If you have to go back to the same hospital I’d be tempted to ring 111 again and ask their advice based on the fact he’s only been examined visually. I’d just want their back-up that he needs basic investigations.

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/06/2021 18:11

Please go back and ask for platelet count/clotting.

My darling brother died within 48 hours of developing thrombocytopenia as a & e didnt do the appropriate tests. Good luck Flowers

unsure20223 · 06/06/2021 18:12

Thank you for all your replies. He mentioned breathlessness to the doctor. The doctor said he'd seen worse! Didn't say in what way though Confused
Should he go back to the same hospital or go to different one?

OP posts:
Onceuponatime1818 · 06/06/2021 18:14

Is there a different hospital close by?

I would defo go back to a&e, and if possible a different hospital

colouringcrayons · 06/06/2021 18:19

The doctor doesn't sound very professional as that is no sort of an answer!

unsure20223 · 06/06/2021 18:28

@Willyoujustbequiet I'm so sorry for your loss Thanks

He has gone to another hospital and I've told him to ask for a blood test/platelet count. I hope they at least do that this time.

I've also sent him the link to the advice other posters also put up here.

Thank you, all!

Namechangednotatroll · 06/06/2021 18:28

Please go to a&e. Better safe than sorry

@Willyoujustbequiet So sorry to hear that. Is that after the vaccine?

unsure20223 · 06/06/2021 19:22

Ok, so different hospital...again, same reaction. Triage nurse said they are only really looking into people with these symptoms who have had their jab in the last ten days. Hmm
She didn't seem concerned at all - even when he said he thought he should check re: clotting etc.
So, anyway...if it's still there tomorrow, we'll triple check again!

That's not right, the new advice is to check anyone who had the jab in the last 30 days

Bluntness100 · 06/06/2021 19:43

That looks like a heat rash to me op.

SecretDoor · 06/06/2021 21:19

Sounds frustrating as blood tests very easy to do in A&E generally.

Is the rash changing? Better or worse?

AppleJane · 06/06/2021 21:25

Crazy how much variation between hospitals there are. My DM went a&e friday as she had pains in one leg 3 weeks after AZ. She's fine but the first thing they did was a blood test. They told her it was a good idea to come. Some people feel they are being pressured into having a vaccine so the least they could do is treat people correctly when they are concerned about clots.
