School and covid

Chasanddive · 05/06/2021 09:26

My son and daughters school has had a large outbreak of covid. Aprox 90 kids got sent home yesterday to isolate. Now his best friends mum just phoned to say her daughter has tested positive this morning. So my kids are isolating anyway but I was in contact with the friend I need to isolate too. We as a family are booked in for testing this morning. So this is what I don’t understand, if we are all tested and are negative do we still need to isolate. I haven’t had to deal with this yet.

Yes because it may not yet show on a test but could do a few days down the line. However unless you were in contact with the daughter you would not need to isolate yet.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 05/06/2021 09:32

Why are you testing without symptoms?

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 05/06/2021 09:34

Yes. You need to isolate. It sucks, I get it, but you need to.

Lindy2 · 05/06/2021 09:34

If your son has spent time with the child who has tested positive then he is a close contact of a positive case and must isolate for 10 days regardless of potentially getting negative test results.

If you haven't been in direct contact with the child who has tested positive then you don't need to isolate unless your son gets a positive result. You would then need to isolate as you would be one of his close contacts.

I hope you are all ok and those that are positive recover quickly.

jumpbounce · 05/06/2021 09:35

Yes close contacts must isolate for 10 days regardless of a negative test because you could develop symptoms and become positive a few days after your negative test.

I presume the testing for contacts straight away is to pick up on more cases and isolate their contacts to try and cut transmission chains. So if you did happen to be positive then your contacts could also know to self isolate. It won't pick up every case due to the incubation period.

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

Why are you testing without symptoms?
Because 1 in 3 people with Coronavirus don't have symptoms and testing when you know you have been in close contact clearly makes sense.

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

Why are you testing without symptoms?
Close contacts can now get a PCR test without symptoms, according to the NHS site. I think the idea is to try to limit spread and allow further contacts to be traced. It doesn't stop the self-isolation, though.

The school told my son to get tested as he’s been in contact with a covid positive at school. He has also woke up with a cough.
We as a family have been in contact with the covid positive child.

Right I have it. I have and my two kids been in direct contact with the child, we have even if it’s negative have to isolate.
My partner who hasn’t been in direct contact dosent need to isolate.
Thanks all

EverythingsComingUpRoses · 05/06/2021 09:42

Apart from your partner now does because your child is now symptomatic so will need to isolate until your child has received their test results

LIZS · 05/06/2021 09:42

But if your ds now has symptoms you all need to isolate until his test result comes through.

Chasanddive · 05/06/2021 09:43

It’s spreading round the school like wildfire. That was three classes sent home plus other siblings.

Chasanddive · 05/06/2021 09:54

Sorry I haven’t had to deal with this before. It can all be a bit confusing.

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

Why are you testing without symptoms?
Becuase you can get a test as a close contact now

It is, especially if you've been lucky to not need to look into it before. Hope it all goes ok for you.
Chasanddive · 05/06/2021 10:11

BlueDucky
Definitely. We have been really careful, masks, social distancing, following the rules. This is the first time I have had to deal with testing and isolating.

It’s very scary, it’s spreading like wildfire. Just heard my friend has been tested positive as well. Luckily I wasn’t near her. Not that that matters as I was in contact with my sons friend.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/06/2021 12:12

Thank your lucky stars you have not had to deal with this yet. (Lost count of the number of periods of isolation now but D's was out of school for six weeks total by the end of December)

And wishing you all the luck in the world for not getting it and staying well. Hope your friends don't get too ill.

lljkk · 05/06/2021 12:36

What school is this ? Sounds like that big an outbreak will be in news, anyway.

Chasanddive · 05/06/2021 15:13

Haha as if I’m going to say what school. That’s his other friend tested positive. We have all just been to be tested, so will find out tomorrow at the earliest
