What to do if you don't agree with being told to self isolate??

Colleague of DHs has tested positive and provided DHs details to track and trace as a close contact. However, he doesn't meet the criteria for close contact - he hasn't been under 1m, and not within 2m for more than a couple of minutes. We are supposed to be going away this weekend! What do we do? Has anyone been in this position?

DS1 who is 18 tested positive yesterday. He's passed on close contact details to track and trace. I know one of them is currently on a touring holiday in Scotland.

alloalloallo · 03/06/2021 15:59

This happened to a friend

He had to isolate for 10 days after a colleague tested positive and gave the names of everyone he worked with, rather than just those working on the same shift.

My friend was working on a different shift and hadn’t seen colleague in weeks.

T&T didn’t clarify anything with the colleague and colleague didn’t really understand what “close contact” entailed.

T&T wouldn’t have it and reminded friend isolating was a legal requirement. He had a couple of phone calls to check he was at home during the 10 days so I wouldn’t chance it

shinynewapple21 · 03/06/2021 16:04

I was going to ask if it was possible he could get a test ?

I see @Sausageroll67 's response about testing above but I don't really see why it's a waste? What about someone potentially losing two weeks of income self isolating ? Or lost productivity etc because someone isn't in work due to isolating ?

shinynewapple21 · 03/06/2021 16:07

I wonder also, if the original friend who has tested positive was to get back in touch with test and trace and explain to them that they had misunderstood the Definition of 'close contact' and ask them to change their records? No idea at all if that's possible , worth a try may be ?

That’s not how isolating as a contact works.
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 03/06/2021 16:19

1-Tests are if you are symptomatic, stop wasting them!

No longer true

2- It can take 10 days for Covid to appear in a close contact
Exactly, hence the isolation period. And why a negative test 2 days before you fly doesn't mean you will still be negative by the time you get on the plane.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 03/06/2021 16:22

It's never going to go away, no matter what anyone does. It's a respiratory virus, those don't just disappear, they mutate all the time. You have to get on with living.

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2021 16:24

Yes, but we’re vaccinating people now. We need to minimise cases while that’s still ongoing.

PCR tests (Not LFT) are for people with symptoms. The self isolation for ten days is because the virus can take up to ten days to present in someone identified as a close contact. FGS what is so hard to understand?
osbertthesyrianhamster · 03/06/2021 16:33

@Brefugee

This thread is astounding. Couple it with all the threads of "when will it ever end?" and you can see the answer: never because nobody wants to apply the rules to themselves.

Frankly? your DH needs to follow instructions to self isolate and suck it up for the good of the community.

It will never end at all because it's a respiratory virus and people breathe. It will just turn into other forms, that's what they do.

There will be some other reason after that.
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 03/06/2021 16:35

Or if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive - the below is from the nhs website.

'If you've been in close contact with someone who's tested positive for COVID-19 you can get a PCR test, whether or not you have symptoms.'

applespearslemons · 03/06/2021 16:35

OP why bother to ask? You're a health professional who knows best.

What info were you hoping to glean from an anonymous forum?

But you still have to isolate for ten days, I wasnt aware the advice had changed on the testing side so thanks but getting a negative result after day 2 after being a close contact doesnt mean youre definitely not going to not develop symptoms on day 6 or whatever?

So personally I think its a waste of a test.

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2021 16:41

If it comes back positive, that’s a whole load more potentially infectious contacts who can be told to isolate.

Exactly. And it might make some people who were going to ignore the advice to isolate think twice if they test positive.
Sausageroll67 · 03/06/2021 16:48

But see my other point about testing neg on day 2 and developing it on Day 6?

RevolvingPivot · 03/06/2021 16:48

You asked what you should do then said you are a health professional and know what to do.

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2021 16:49

Yes, it doesn’t affect whether you continue to isolate or not.

@Sausageroll67

I'd already said similar in a previous post. But still not a waste of time for other reasons already stated by myself and others.
Abraxan · 03/06/2021 18:24

Tests are if you are symptomatic, stop wasting them!

I believe the rules have changed in many areas.
You can often now get a pcr test if a close contact.

Plus anyone can do an lft test.

There are very little issues with booking pcr tests these days. Often can get them same day and results back in 24 hours.

Imnothereforthedrama · 03/06/2021 18:35

Sorry but why would he give your details if your not a close contact ? I mean I could name everyone in my office doesn’t mean they are a close contact . How bad would you feel if you came down with symptoms and had passed it on .
You can be fined and rightly so you isolate unfortunately I’ve done it a few times and it’s a pain in the arse but not for one minute have a thought oh no I don’t think I’m a close contact even if I think the chances are slim.

Mojoj · 03/06/2021 18:37

Do what you want. Sooner everyone puts their foot down and says enough already, sooner we'll get our lives back.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 03/06/2021 18:42

The exact same thing happened to a family member, they did isolate.

Was very annoying.

Brefugee · 03/06/2021 19:04

yes @osbertthesyrianhamster but what will end, eventually when the arseholes stop arseholing, is the restrictions. There really isn't that much longer to wait for that. All this "waaaahhhh i neeeeed a holiday" is tedious.

I do have sympathy for anyone who needs to work and isolation would fuck that up.
