I live in a highrise apartment building. Obviously there are elevators. It is what is called a strata building here. We own our own suites but share common property like the lobby, parking etc. Our balconies are also common property.
We have an "elected" strata council. I put elected in quotes because there is never an actual choice, we just have enough people usually who volunteer. Sadly, some of them think being on council is an incredibly important job. A bit like hall monitor or head girl. They are a necessary evil.
Ok, my point. Last week signs went up in the elevator titled "balcony etiquette." First of all, a good 50% or more of our building residents do not speak much English. Why use a pompous term, like etiquette which is not in common use?
It is a long list of rules about not letting any water fall off your balcony, not talking onthe phone, no smoking, please try to keep barbeque smoke down, no socializing etc. My favourite is don't throw plastic bags off the balcony.
The plastic bag one was a shock. I love throwing plastic bags off my balcony.
There is already a long notice in the elevators and on bulletin boards about Covid 19 and the public health regs etc. it clearly states we must wear masks in all common areas. I love that it directs us to call police for violations. Sigh.
The almost or maybe actually the last straw is a new sign put up everywhere today. It has NOTICE in a two inch font, a picture of a masks and the words MASKS REQUIRED again in huge letters. No shit Sherlock.
Right next to the other notice about masks.
It is making my blood boil. I have never seen any of the mostly retired university professors or academics in our building without masks. The non English speakers are mostly Asian and wear masks all the time.
I can barely restrain myself from ripping it down. Enough already. WE KNOW.
If they are trying to change behaviour they are going about it wrong.
I can't believe something so trivial has annoyed me so much. Maybe venting can stop me committing the anti-social act of ripping down the sign and throwing it off my balcony in a plastic bag whilst overwatering my basil plant so the water runs off.
