Having a wobble about second AZ.

It is tomorrow, and I am really scared. The news about the blood clot risk came out just after my first dose, so I didn’t factor it in last time. Now it is a bit more of an issue I am really worried. I realise it is rare, but I am very anxious. How have others dealt with this ?

There are about a million other threads on this if you are looking for info.

In my case I rationalised that Covid was the bigger risk and I wanted the peace of mind of being fully protected.

bluejelly · 01/06/2021 23:02

Has my second today. The nurse told me that all the clotting cases that had happened were after the 1st jab. Also they were extremely rare.
Try not to worry Thanks

cassgate · 01/06/2021 23:05

I had my second dose last week. I admit I was a bit apprehensive but figured I had the first dose with virtually no side effects so second would be fine. It was fine no side effects at all not even a sore arm this time.

olympicsrock · 01/06/2021 23:10

Hello - I am a doctor and specialist in this area.
The clits happen after a rare immune response . If a problem happens it would be after the first jab.
If no reaction then you will be fine xx

jackstini · 01/06/2021 23:13

DH & I both have our second AZ tomorrow

The clot risk is so small and mostly happened after first jab so we are feeling ok about it

I rationalise that I would still fly (when we can safely!) even though there is a risk of blood clots from that

Katie517 · 01/06/2021 23:16

I have delayed mine as I want to wait for more info on clotting after second doses as there seems to be an increasing amount each week ( this is easy to find info if you want to look it up) I also got mine the week before all the clotting news broke. (32 no health issues got it early due to spare doses). I think they may change the advice and give a different second dose to under 40s who have had AZ soon based on what is happening in Europe and I don’t want to be in the same situation where I have it and a week later the advice changes. I also felt dreadful for weeks after the first dose and as someone who is never usually ill or has any health concerns this bothered me.

olympicsrock · 01/06/2021 23:29

Sorry should say clots!

SirVixofVixHall · 01/06/2021 23:40

I did search for other threads before posting, didn’t find many so clearly need better search terms ! Although as it is a changing situation I don’t want to look through threads from a month or so ago.
I was also really unwell for a while after the first dose, and have tinnitus, which I’d had last year mildly but had worn off.
I don’t know what I am hoping for really, maybe some information that I haven’t seen.
I have autoimmune disease so mentions of autoimmune responses have made me even more worried !
When it all came out I hoped that by now there would be some idea of the risk factors, but so far nothing.

She was wrong. Currently blood clots with low platelets happen in about 1 in 800,000 people after the second dose, but that number has been steadily rising (it was 1 in 1,000,000 a week or so ago). Still about ten times rarer compared to the first dose though.
pinkmagnolias · 01/06/2021 23:55

It’s steadily rising as more second shots are being given.....

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 02/06/2021 00:25

I never had any doubt about having my second AZ jab, but it's impossible not to think about the risks when it's all that's talked about.

However, I accept that the risk is teeny, and as I have autoimmune stuff plus a clotting disorder, for me the vaccine risk is worth it to avoid covid and moreso long covid, and of course the risk of death by clot as a result of vaccine is reduced now we know what to look for.

Notthemessiah · 02/06/2021 00:31

You missed the point - numbers are rising both in total AND as a percentage (hence why it was 1 in 1,000,000 and is now 1 in 800,000)

Did you see this post, OP?

You’ll be fine. Don’t let anxiety get the better of you.

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 02/06/2021 00:38

Some interesting comparison odds here:
stacker.com/stories/2343/what-are-chances
Note that you have greater odds of winning an Olympic medal than dying of a blood clot as a result of your second jab.

We do all need to be rational about this Flowers

You're a specialist doctor in this area but you don't know that there have now been quite a few reported cases after the second dose of AZ, in people who didn't have a reaction the first time? That seems odd.
LovelyLadyLily · 02/06/2021 00:43

OP, sorry you're feeling anxious. It's a horrible thing to have to decide. I've cancelled my second AZ shot for now and will watch the evolving data.

I’ve noticed a few people are saying the same. In what way do you expect the data to evolve and how would that change your decision not to have the second dose?
SirVixofVixHall · 02/06/2021 11:06

I also hoped that there would be more clarification by now, three months after my first jab, as to who might be more at risk.
I am pretty sure I will go through with it, but I am worried. With the first one my worry was mainly an allergic reaction as I carry Epipens, so I was happy to have the AZ, now I am much more anxious.

Do you have any references for this, LLL? Everything I can find says different, would be happy to read more.

User629202 · 02/06/2021 11:51

The risk is associated with the first jab not the second. And the risk from Covid is greater.

PixieDust28 · 02/06/2021 11:53

I'm 28 and had my second dose of AZ two weeks. I didn't even have a sore arm afterwards like the first one.

The nurse said I am fine to go ahead with the second as I've had the first.
Do you take the pill?

PixieDust28 · 02/06/2021 11:54
