Extending the school day

What are your thoughts on this?
Many are saying it is pointless and won't achieve much if an extra half hour or so is tagged onto the end of the day. Others have said that it should be based more on sports and free choice activities but my thinking is, isn't that what after school clubs are for?

Stupid idea. Doesn't England have enough problems with teacher retention as it is? Why make the job even less appealing?

eddiemairswife · 03/06/2021 09:19

Some pupils are now on study leave, even though there are no exams to study for.

Piggywaspushed · 03/06/2021 09:48

Because they have done them, and now the teachers need time to do the (extensive) work of the exam boards, all unpaid.

Appuskidu · 03/06/2021 10:04

I presume schools are still paying the exam boards for their ‘services’ despite doing it all themselves as well?!

Piggywaspushed · 03/06/2021 10:17

Yup!

My school finishes at 3.35. Pupils off the premises at 4pm once buses have collected them. Meetings for staff are until 5pm. Parent's evenings would also start later. It's a no from me. My goodwill after the last year ( 24 years teaching) has well and truly gone.

Macaroni46 · 03/06/2021 12:04

I'm with you @flumposie. 27 years at the chalk face.
At my school meetings run from til 5.15, sometimes longer.
And people forget that for every 1 hour lesson taught, that equates to at least 30 mins of prep (often more) and maybe 20 to 30 mins marking / follow up.
I'm out if this is brought in .. unless the relentless (and largely pointless) requests for data, assessment, moderation, provision mapping, knowledge organisers etc are significantly reduced!

TropicalFairyCake · 03/06/2021 12:25

Our school seems to be the only school that has alresdy done this. Sonce last Oct half term finished 3.45!

Added a session of maths or english in the day and pushed other subjects to the last hour (french/tech/pe...) to discourage people taking children out early.

We only did the weeks last year. This time round we took out at 3!

Onceuponatime1818 · 03/06/2021 12:36

@TropicalFairyCake

Who is staffing the extra sessions/time?

flumposie · 03/06/2021 12:42

@Macaroni46 agree with everything you have said.

TropicalFairyCake · 03/06/2021 12:53

Once - the teachers. They say they have used catch up funding for it but as a parent don't know how that worked....

Reasoning- all kids have missed out/missed time (also I think anything optional means those who need it dont turn up) /a child's teacher knows them best etc.

However. We have managed lockdown work, high performing child and was one of the few who opted out! If they'd offered an hour or sport or enrichment I would have felt differently.

Ours has now finished! Bizarre to think our school extended the day when others shortened it!
