Are cases actuallt rising?

After studying statistics at uni nany moons ago, it always interests me that you can make raw data say whatever you want it to say. So got me thinking about the rising cases of covid being reported.

How does this sit in total number of covid tests carried out? So for example if 1% of covid tests carried out were positive, has this % of total tests actually changed, or has the positive results risen due to carrying out all the surge testing/twice weekly testing for all etc etc.

Is there any way to see this data or do wee only have access to the statistics that they create and decide to share with us that fit their chosen narrative

Everything you mention is reported on the government website. Yes cases are rising, test positivity has just started going up.
Eg here coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/testing?areaType=nation&areaName=England

Yes, up 28% in the last week

coronavirus.data.gov.uk

Admissions and deaths are also up.

Fortunately our numbers remain very low

But if there continued to be exponential rise (Indian variant is doubling in about a week, isn't it?) then obviously that will change fast.

Let's hope it doesn't come to that, and also that the hospitalisation rate does not rise as much as the case rate

If you want to discuss and analyse the stats and what they actually mean, there are lots of stats nerds on the data thread. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4254976-Data-Stat-Daily-Numbers-started-26th-May-2021

We see the full stats.

We can be sure it's a genuine rise because most days last week the number of tests was falling whilst cases were risking

Yesterday's numbers shows 28% rise in cases but only 1% rise in tests.

And the rise cases being greater than the rise in tests has IIRC been the case every day

The 'narrative' is fully backed by the data and it would be inaccurate to say it's an artefact of testing rather than a real rise.

The Advisers, in the start of previous waves, explained in press conferences how you can be sure it's a real rise.

Yes I think they are, even though some of the rise will be down to more targeted testing.

Who cares about cases though? Now that the vaccination roll out has vaccinated so many people, starting with the vulnerable, hospitalisations and serious illness remain low.

And before people start frothing about variants and "long covid" - there's always going to be new variants and people who struggle with post-viral symptoms.

No more lockdowns, no more destroying the economy and people's mental health.

There’s a fantastic data guy on Twitter called Ganesh Ranganathan who produces daily charts and statistics so you can see clearly what’s happening.
