Child in DH’s class tested positive

Wheelsontheredbus · 24/05/2021 17:46

So he’s now got to self isolate for 10 days. We had a break away booked for the half term week, that obviously won’t be able to happen now. First time we would have been away since last summer.
Gutted isn’t the word Sad when will it all end?

Does he really have to self-isolate? What about the 15 minute rule? (Not closer than 2 m for longer than 15.) Thought that was the magic get-out.

Wheelsontheredbus · 24/05/2021 17:52

@yomellamoHelly apparently so, as she sits at the front of the class and he was in the classroom teaching for an hour.

We are due to go away on Saturday and I am dreading this - being told last minute we can’t go (2 in primary school)

You feel you can’t plan or get too excited about anything.

Cuntryhouse · 24/05/2021 18:02

Is it definitely the whole 10 days? When did his symptoms start, or was it an lft today? Can you still get away for part of the week?

AzureTwist · 24/05/2021 18:04

Is he Sec? At my school we have magic yellow tape, so a whole year group could be out but not the staff apparently!

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2021 18:33

Your OP says a child tested positive but then you mention teacher??

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2021 18:44

Oh, I am being thick. Sorry!

Do does your DH not stay 2m away or is his classroom too small?

@keeponkeepinon

My child is in the same position. A child in this class tested positive, my child is nowhere near this person and has never even spoken to them. Tell me why the heck we should have to cancel our first weekend away since last summer because this makes no sense. Not within 1 metre and not within 2 metres for 15 mins or more. The schools are just blanket banning and sending the lot home with no consideration of whether some of these children even are close contacts. And certainly not considering the effect it has on the whole family. I
It’s PHE a who makes the decision. But realistically if they have been in the same classroom for an hour then they have all been exposed. There is a really good Spanish study into how coronavirus spreads around a room.
Mistressinthetulips · 24/05/2021 18:57

Who has told him he needs to isolate? If his desk (or where he stands) is 2m away from the front row then he is fine. Unless he has been working directly with the pupil, chatting about her work for example for an extended period (and maybe he doesn't want to tell you he did!)
I think you and any dc should go away without him to be honest. That's would I would prefer whether I was in your or your dh's position.
But I still don't understand why he has to isolate. Has PHE told him this, who did the contact tracing?

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2021 19:00

Schools do their own contact tracing in England mistress. Not sure if same where you are?

MRex · 24/05/2021 19:00

If the kid already has a result then it's maximum 9 days, which is Tuesday. Maybe even 8 days so Monday. You could still get a good enough amount of holiday time away if so.

TheDukeissoHot1 · 24/05/2021 19:01

Feel your pain OP. We’re currently awaiting test results for DS & hoping beyond hope it’s negative for same reason - if positive we will have to cancel our half term holiday. The kids had only just been back at school a week too, after isolating for 10 days due to cases in school. Feels like this will never end!

Mistressinthetulips · 24/05/2021 19:05

Ah piggy we would make up the lists etc but the decision on which of them need to isolate is made by the public health people.
Either way in secondary the teacher almost never needs to isolate as was not within 2m for 15 mins+
Maybe the virus circulates differently in Scotland?

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2021 19:07

In all likelihood!!

moominmomma1234 · 24/05/2021 19:07

Same here for my kids nursery , we will miss first two days of our 4 day hol but I will stay at home with dc and join rest of family later . I have no idea if he had close contact as the whole nursery shuts if there is a case due to it being open plan

DancesWithDaffodils · 24/05/2021 19:16

If the result came through today, did DH last see the child on Friday?
10 days takes you to Monday. That still gives you most of half term.
Or you and the kids can go over the weekend, and DH can join you part way through.

picturesandpickles · 24/05/2021 19:20

I really hope he doesn;t get ill, assume he is old enough to be vaccinated?

I know just how you feel, we had something we are looking forward to, someone is feeling peaky, you just realise everything can be affected. So frustrating! It will end... eventually!!!!

ButterflyBitch · 24/05/2021 19:42

The teacher being 2m away thing makes me lol. One child in my sons class had symptoms and my son is the only other child to test positive once the class isolated. Oh and the teacher. Who was more than 2m away from my son and this child. If he’s been told to isolate then he needs to isolate. Yes it’s shitty but if he became poorly (and as an adult he’s more at risk of getting actual symptoms) or spread it around then how bad would he feel about that?

jumpbounce · 24/05/2021 19:48

Coronavirus is now known to be airbourne so really if your child has been in a classroom with someone who is positive then of course they are a contact as the virus will have been in the air within that room!

But remember according to the government during this whole pandemic...coronavirus doesn't spread in schools Hmm

BlackeyedSusan · 24/05/2021 20:11

One of my kid's teachers had to isolate as the positive kid was on the front row. Classrooms are too small for teachers to stay two meters away.

LlamaGiles · 24/05/2021 20:18

Exactly same here, child at nursery tested positive so now we have to do our 10 days. As pp said it's PHE who decide. I'm gutted as we were meant to be away this coming weekend.

It isn't.

ifonly4 · 24/05/2021 20:43

It's 10 days isolation from last day he had contact.
