Child in DH’s class tested positive

So he’s now got to self isolate for 10 days. We had a break away booked for the half term week, that obviously won’t be able to happen now. First time we would have been away since last summer.
Gutted isn’t the word Sad when will it all end?

All the teachers I know haven’t had to isolate.
Maybe that’s because they’re secondary school though so there’d be too many off at one time.

Mistressinthetulips · 24/05/2021 21:08

We've not been asked to isolate if within 1m for a brief time. I gave up trying to work out the logic some time ago.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 24/05/2021 21:22

PHE have changed their tune recently about teachers isolating. I'm secondary in Manchester and we have 4 teachers isolating, 1 teacher positive and 9 positive students, so a good 200 out isolating.

DP is isolating (despite only being in 2 days a week as a phased return after having covid in February) along with a pile of his school's staff in Bolton. They have positive staff and positive students in every year group, so each year group has less than a half of the students in. PHE are very keen for isolating this time around, especially as a few of them are appearing in clusters.

As for the 2 metre thing; we have no classrooms where that is possible. Neither does DP, hence the isolation.

I’m a sec teacher and I had to isolate last October as was within 1m of a positive case for a minutes. Apparently the guidance is 2m - 15 minutes, 1m - I minute. We missed October half term, Christmas (DC isolating) and Feb half term was a washout. I am staying as far as I can from all pupils at the moment and crossing my fingers there are no cases in my DC’s class for this half term!

smogsville · 25/05/2021 10:46

@Wheelsontheredbus why can't he just do tests to confirm he's negative then you can go surely?

Looksabitbig · 25/05/2021 10:47

That's not how isolation (or incubation) works

Sunnyfreezesushi · 25/05/2021 12:03

you and the kids do not need to self isolate. Can you go ahead on your own and he joins you later?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/05/2021 13:07

That's precisely how an outbreak shot around a school fairly nearby. They assumed the same thing, kids ignored isolation and then got infected, despite being out of school. All because they believed that negative LFTs meant that they didn't need to isolate.

I am sorry op. That's absolutely rubbish for you all.

Santastealer · 25/05/2021 13:11

I’m Secondary, had numerous cases in my classes but I’ve never had to isolate. They say because I’m 2m away I don’t need to, even though Joe Bloggs on the other side of the room has to.

It’s because a single case could take out 10+ secondary teachers at once and then the school wouldn’t be able to open.

BeaMinus · 25/05/2021 13:12

Total madness.

smogsville · 25/05/2021 13:25

@OhYouBadBadKitten but if her DH is isolating now, had had a negative result yesterday and then another one by, say, Friday, is it not reasonable to expect that he hasn't got COVID? I'm a bit confused as to the point of the testing if the results can't be relied on. My team and I all do a test the night before we travel in for our odd days in the office at the moment, for example. We rely on the validity of the negative result to tell us we're fine to jump on the tube and come in.

Separately, OP it sounds like other teachers on this thread have been given different advice so your DH might want to take a view on that.

Piggywaspushed · 25/05/2021 13:42

But the point of those pre emptive LFTs is you can accept the negative at more or less face value because you haven't been a contact of someone who is positive. Everything changes when you know that fact.

Jjlrb47922 · 25/05/2021 18:58

Where were you supposed to be going on your break away?
When should the isolation end?

mondaywine · 26/05/2021 09:21

Our recent experience is that if there is a case the teacher will be isolating.

GreyStep · 26/05/2021 09:25

2m isn’t magic. One person in a room with covid will spread around the whole room. There have been enough studies to show this now.
Outside isn’t magic either. It’s not 15mins within 2m, that was bollocks by track and trace so they could cope with numbers

KatherineOfGaunt · 26/05/2021 10:58

I have been sent home today as our bubble has popped. Supposed to be going on family holiday over the whole half-term week.

Gutted doesn't even BEGIN to cover it. I've just had a good cry.
