Anyone had 2nd AZ after 8 weeks, not 12?

I'm going away end of June, when my 2nd jab was due at 12 weeks.

Just got my appointment with availability from 8 weeks after. I've booked it as I've seen articles saying from 8 weeks is OK now.

I’m having my second soon with an 8 week gap, no qualms whatsoever. I’m sure someone will be along saying it’s better to leave it 12 weeks yada yada, but for many people the risk of catching covid outweighs that.

News reports today suggest a 1 in 600,000 chance of blood clots after the second AZ jab. That’s clots (which are treatable) NOT deaths.

So go for it, and enjoy your holiday!!

I recently had my first AZ and was advised that they're recommending 8 weeks between jabs now.

EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling · 24/05/2021 16:46

Had mine at 10wks, last Thurs. Zero effects this time after feeling like I'd been run over by a truck first jab.

MightNeedABiggerGlass · 24/05/2021 16:50

Just had my 2nd jab, eight weeks after my 1st.

I felt absolutely horrendous after my first, took me a strong month to feel better. 2nd jab, sore arm for 24 hours and absolutely nothing else.

AstraZeneca and I'm late 40s.

Singlenotsingle · 24/05/2021 16:53

Where's the problem? Wasn't it supposed initially to be 3 weeks? I had my second one nine weeks after the first. No problems.

Wilkolampshade · 24/05/2021 18:00

Yep, just had mine at 8/9 weeks. All fine.

AzureTwist · 24/05/2021 18:01

Yes, between 8-9 weeks here.

Non it was Pfizer that was recommended 3 weeks.

8-12 weeks has always been recommended for AZ so anywhere in that timeframe is fine.

MiniMaxi · 24/05/2021 18:10

Yeah I think it’s fine OP, 12 weeks was largely to make sure they could do as many first doses as possible at the beginning - and also it’s more effective than 4 weeks for AZ but I’m sure they wouldn’t be saying 8 if it wasn’t as effective

Tulipomania · 24/05/2021 18:36

There have been quite a few threads on this already. Some of us are a bit pissed off because we haven't had an official invitation to bring our 2nd jab forward from 12 weeks.

But 8 weeks is the norm now for groups 1 to 9.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/05/2021 18:46

I'm Group 6 and had my second AZ after 11 weeks. Mostly because of delivery issues, otherwise it would still have been 12 weeks.

Dementedswan · 24/05/2021 19:02

I'm group 6 I had a 9 week gap, got called early unexpectedly so had 2nd two weeks ago.

8 weeks is also the norm for under 40’s and over 50’s leaving 40-49 a bit adrift, but AZ appointments can be changed online whatever age you are.
wintertravel1980 · 24/05/2021 21:07

All other things being equal, the efficacy is higher with the 12 weeks interval.

On the other hand, there is a benefit of being fully vaccinated sooner rather than later.

I will personally try to stick to the 12 weeks gap but it is a personal decision based on my individual risk assessment.

AliasGrape · 24/05/2021 21:12

I split the difference - 10 weeks. Didn’t really think too much of it just got the message to book it so went ahead and booked it for a time I could manage easily. Feel a bit ropey like the start of a cold, which I did a little bit last time, but it’s very minor.

Dementedswan · 24/05/2021 22:11

I had mine through gp, I trust my gp, he seese regularly therefore when he did my second at 9 weeks I believe he had my best interests at heart.

Tulipomania · 25/05/2021 07:08

NHS website still says you have to wait to be contacted:

"We'll be contacting some people in high-risk groups directly to offer earlier appointments for their 2nd dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Please wait to be contacted if you think you're in this group."

Bluesheep8 · 25/05/2021 11:22

I was in group 6. 8 weeks between jabs.

Yes, but in reality you don’t have to wait until you’re called. There is ample AZ to bring second jabs forward because we ordered loads before age recommendations were flagged.

I haven’t heard a peep from my GP surgery, and didn’t get the call up text to book until well after my first jab. If the national booking system says you’re eligible, you’re eligible.

I had AZ and will have second jab in two weeks. Friend the same age waited til her GP contacted her and had one of the other jabs and now can’t bring hers forward. There will be 10 weeks between my second jab and hers, and she’s now kicking herself. No point in being pissed off about it if you could be proactive and change it but decided to wait it out.

H1978 · 25/05/2021 12:22

The doctor who gave me my jab said I could book the second one in 21 days. I’ll definitely be moving mine forward as the next one is booked for 3rd August.

Fitforforty · 25/05/2021 12:23

The Lancet and BMJ say after 6 weeks you have 55% protection but after 12 week gap it’s 85%.

Yes.

Some (and potentially many) people may decide that it is better to have somewhat less protection sooner rather than wait for 4 additional weeks but it is a trade off. Speed vs efficacy.

Tulipomania · 25/05/2021 12:34

Thanks JulietBravo. If I'd realised initially I should have done this, but now it's just over a week to my 2nd vaccine and I don't want to risk delaying it if there's no availability.

I booked 2nd jab at the same time as my first, at a local vax centre.

Good that yours is so soon, we will all get there in the end and that’s the main thing Flowers
