Now variants have become a bit old hat, what will be the next ‘thing’?

Absolutely sick of hearing about the variants. We’ve got the Indian, now there’s the Yorkshire. Had the South African, the Brazilian, the Kent. Each supposedly deadlier and able to wipe out younger people than the lastHmm
Before that it was long covid. Before that it was causing PIMs inthe dc (never amounted to anything but it was scary news for a few weeks.)
So now variants have been there done that, what’s going to scare and depress us next?

Probably don’t read mumsnet PP. There’s plenty of threads sneering at long covid, this really isn’t a bad one.. hope your sister is OK.

I don’t doubt long covid isn’t a thing. For some people it clearly is, covid has caused long term damage. But there’s also those jumping on the bandwagon. Sadly I know a few of those via work. Two colleagues have been off sick with long covid since November. It’s miraculously cured itself since lockdown eased.. they have extremely busy social lives by all accounts now. They went from ‘I can’t get out of bed or just walking up the stairs leaves my gasping for breath’ to ‘look at me running around softplay or look at me on multiple lunches with mates, trips to the beach, back in the gym’ .. apparently being able to do stuff just really ‘perked them back up’ 🙄 I’ve managed to give enough photo evidence of activity outside work to HR that they’ve been dragged back to work. You ain’t living the life & leaving the team short staffed anymore ladies 😒

And the above is why it’ll never be taken properly seriously. Which is sad for those who genuinely have a problem.

SilverNotGold · 21/05/2021 22:45

@Brokensharted, it really wasn't that long, although it clearly exceeded your ability to concentrate. What an inhumane thing to write in response to the poster saying she was concerned about her poorly sister.

Mybigbed · 21/05/2021 22:53

Yeah I know there’s a lot of ‘but what about long covid...’ but I know 4 people with it and not one of them is the sort who is prone to malingering, attention seeking or work skiving. They are all absolutely gutted, embarrassed at their lack of ability to go about their usual lives but stoic.
Also they are all fit and healthy-3 extremely so. So it is a worry for those who haven’t been vaccinated.

TheKeatingFive · 21/05/2021 22:59

I don’t think anyone is saying that. I have no doubt long Covid is devastating for those unlucky enough to be affected.

However it is not a societal issue significant enough to shut down people’s lives for. Like most diseases and their aftermath.

Mybigbed · 21/05/2021 23:18

But the thing is these represent a quarter of the people I’ve known (reasonably well, not just friends of friends) who’ve had Covid.
All between ages of 40 and 50 so extrapolated that does have in impact on a population level (or did, before vaccines)

enjoysun · 21/05/2021 23:20

Antibiotic resistance

Mybigbed · 21/05/2021 23:21

But I agree it’s definitely not feasible to lockdown any longer and hopefully ‘long’ covid won’t be too long term. I know lots of illnesses can leave people suffering for months.

Mybigbed · 21/05/2021 23:22

@enjoysun

Antibiotic resistance
Now this is truly terrifying.
Pinchoftums · 21/05/2021 23:27

Fucking hell I'm bored of threads like this. Stop droning on and find something else to talk about. If it's not bothering you get on with your life instead of stirring shit up. Unless of course this is the only thing of interest in your life.

ContessaVerde · 21/05/2021 23:29

‘been there done that’ with variants?
No, variants will run and run while there are populations who remain unvaccinated.

Will we get a globally coordinated approach to getting the whole world vaccinated?

@Needanewhat

My sister has long covid. She's 25 and hasn't been able to work since last June. She's so depressed that I worry daily about her taking her own life.

Seeing long covid being sneered at on this thread had distressed me so much I don't even know what to say tbh.

Sadly post viral syndrome has been sneered at for many years. It's only since it's been rebranded as long covid that it's even recently made news, but it's always been a thing - only it used to be people who suffer from it were told they were making it up, had personality disorder, were mentally ill, forced to exercise, all sorts.
DdraigGoch · 22/05/2021 00:10

@Brokensharted

I think we’ll have a period of “but LONG COVID” again. And then “CASES ARE RISING.” Of course they are you fucking dimwit - but now people have had vaccines they aren’t dying.
Of course we'll have months of Daily Mail headlines "DEATHS SOAR BY 50%" when we have three deaths instead of two on a given day.
CrunchyCarrot · 22/05/2021 00:36

@pennylane83

Have you not yet stumbled across the news articles about the black fungus epidemic in India that is causing concern - linked to covid. The next thing to be fearful of...
Yes, and it's truly terrifying - it has nothing to do with black mould in your bathroom, either. Don't read if you are of a delicate disposition:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-57191507

It is very much linked to diabetes, which is prevalent in India.

lightand · 22/05/2021 06:47

Triple variant, is the heading for today.
So they can go to say 100 times variant..

Temp023 · 22/05/2021 06:55

It’s okay, I’ve told all the variants how bored you are and they’ve agreed to go away.
Job Done!

Mathshelpme · 22/05/2021 08:22

We’ve got one...vaccines don’t protect against future strains.

I mean, obviously they don’t...that’s why the flu vaccine is slightly different each year, but they do like to spin it as something terrible. It’s all in the gov documents though. Perhaps in 25 years we can hold all of the people involved to account.

Kokeshi123 · 22/05/2021 08:37

RSV (croup) probably. A lot of countries are seeing weird out-of-season outbreaks, probably because all the social distancing has done strange things to the viral ecosystem and young children are now lacking immunity. It will, however, be used to justify perma-masking and an endless dripfeed of social distancing.

Needanewhat: I have absolutely no doubt LC exists, but the criteria and definitions I have seen are so ludicrously vague that almost everyone I know could potentially qualify. I suspect that the majority of reported cases are either psychosomatic or are simply a case of people taking a while to recover from the virus.

Puppylucky · 22/05/2021 08:37

Mucor has always existed though - it's not a new thing and has always been a risk to patients with a suppressed immune system.It also has established and effective treatment protocols. Like many of the stories emerging from India at the moment its prevalence is a result of a shambolic health care system that does not provide ordinary people with effective care. As such it's of limited relevance to us in the UK - not sure why the Guardian gave it such prominence TBH.

lightand · 22/05/2021 13:50

@lightand

I stand corrected! It is a triple mutant with a strange collection of genes, no less!
ajmouse · 22/05/2021 14:57

I don't think the variant thing is going to run out of steam any time soon. Plenty more regions of the UK or other countries to name them after yet! Where's the Cumberland variant... not a sausage...

PicsInRed · 22/05/2021 15:05

I've been saying it from the start, the end game is the viral marriage Cov-Bola.

Wait for it. You'll see. Grin

In all seriously though, I did see this, COVID black fungus eyes. Awww heck, why not? Who needs eyes anyway.
www.bbc.com/future/article/20210519-mucormycosis-the-black-fungus-hitting-indias-covid-patients

I take all fear mongering with a heaping wallop of salt these days. I shall lose zero sleep.

God I hate croup. DS2 has had 12 bastard times
