Going away and covid vaccine

Enigma007 · 20/05/2021 23:45

Looking for some advice.

I am travelling to an Amber listed and will be in quarantine upon return for 10 days as government rules state. However, during the 10 day quarantine period I'm booked to receive my second shot of the covid vaccine (exactly 12 weeks apart). I can't move the travel nor can I move the date of the second vaccine forward to take it before I go. I've been trying to reschedule it and unable to so far.

Therefore do I have the option to get the jab on my scheduled date, while I'm in quarantine. I go get the jab and go straight home. Or will I have to start the process again and book the first dose followed by the second dose 12/8 weeks later?

You won't be able to have the vaccine. You need to not be in contact with anyone. You could infect the whole vaccination centre.

You just have your second vaccine when you are out of quarantine you don't need to have a first one again.

RainbowCrayons · 21/05/2021 04:57

If the vaccine is towards the end of the 10 days can you do test to release and leave quarantine after the negative test result comes back? It will cost you more in tests but you may not have to reschedule.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 21/05/2021 05:10

Please god do not turn up at a mass vaccination clinic whilst in quarantine 🙈
Your need to have your vaccine on time does not override the safety of the people you'd encounter on your visit for the vaccination during quarantine!
You'll simply have to re arrange your appointment for week 13 instead you will not need to start the whole vaccination process again

Overthebow · 21/05/2021 05:20

You can’t have the vaccine whilst quarantining. You’ll have to have it after.

Exactly what's said above. You cannot go to vaccination centre when in quarantine. I hope the Amber doesn't go to read while you're there or it £1750 for a 10 day hotel on your return.

I have booked my second vaccination for while I am away. It’s a U.K. holiday so no worries about quarantining or anything but was the soonest first jab I could book on a weekend and the second jab dates on offer were just over a three day period that didn’t suit.

I had fully assumed that I would be able to cancel it once the first one is done... Is it not that simple?

Oblomov21 · 21/05/2021 05:58

What day of the 10 is your test?

You can take an additional PCR test on day five, and if you test negative you are allowed to leave quarantine early.

Would that help?

Oblomov21 · 21/05/2021 05:59

Sorry, your vaccine?
You can leave quarantine early, if you do an extra test and it's negative.

Forestiere · 21/05/2021 06:00

You can change the date of your 2nd,go on the NHS booking app and it lets you cancel and rebook.
Don't go while you're still in quarantine though!

Enigma007 · 21/05/2021 07:32

Thanks all. Will deffo not be leaving quarantine for the vaccine then.

Won't be able to afford the test to release due to the costs of the day 2 and day 8 pcr on return. Will certainly try to call the helpline and see if they have can help give me a date after quarantine.

Yes it is that simple. You can cancel the second appointment after attending the first and book a more convenient date

How can leaving quarantine even because question? If you were infectious (the whole point of quarantine is for you to isolate until you’re not) that wouldn’t sudden you pause while you get a vaccine. You’d also be risking a massive fine.

I know you say you now won’t be doing this but I just don’t get how you thought this would ever be ok.

PurpleDaisies · 21/05/2021 07:47

Posted too soon. It is easy to cancel a jab and rebook it. This will be the situation plenty of people find themselves in if they are ill or have to isolate as a contact on the day.

Rillington · 21/05/2021 07:47

Exactly @PurpleDaisies it's no wonder we are still in this nightmare if people think they can leave quarantine to potentially infect others.

Cantstandsmugness · 21/05/2021 08:09

Just go to your nearest vaccine centre days before You go and ask about standby later jabs. They often have some left over from
No shows that they are keen to administer.

Oblomov21 · 21/05/2021 09:14

Why are you posters all up in arms about leaving quarantine early?
You are allowed. Government Guidelines. I stated them earlier.

You are allowed to leave quarantine early. On day 5, if you choose to pay for an extra PCR test and it's negative.

Why would you stay in quarantine for 10 days, when you don't have to, if you can stop at day 5, because you are negative?

Don’t be disingenuous. You know that’s not what the op was suggesting.
Oblomov21 · 21/05/2021 09:49

I know! Wink
But. The fact is, (not op related) but people actually can!

Quartz2208 · 21/05/2021 10:02

When are you planning on going to said Amber country I get the impression that you havent even had the first vaccine yet so the second is due end of August/September?

In which case I wouldnt do anything now and wait and see. A lot can change between now and then.

If you have had the first one you should be able to change the second

Like I said, I will not be leaving quarantine to get the jab but I was asking just to make sure I was on the right page. It's ok to ask questions.

LondonWFuck · 23/05/2021 09:46

I don't understand how it can even be a question.

lljkk · 23/05/2021 09:49

I hope your trip goes well.

14 week gap is fine if you have to wait a bit.

There's nothing magical about 12 week interval for getting 2nd jab; the vaccines were actually tested at 4 week intervals.

TheVanguardSix · 23/05/2021 09:54

In some cases, you can get out if quarantine early through ‘test to release’ upon your return OP (unless you’re returning from a red list country). Go to Gov.uk site.

Lostinacloud · 23/05/2021 10:03

Hasn’t anyone here worked out the complete ridiculousness that is return 10 day quarantine?

So you come back and have to take a test on day 2 and day 8. If negative on day 8 then you can leave quarantine on day 10. However, pay even more money and you can get a negative test on day 5 and finish quarantine by day 6!

It’s when you really think about how illogical that is that you should be able to question the whole setup in the first place and not just blindly accept it. The Uk system is a complete money grab and nothing else. Europe’s tests are all free, even to non nationals.

Clawing back the money spent during lockdown. Uk qurarine is extortionate in comparison to other countries. Canada have hotel qurarine for some arrival countries and are charging $2000 cad for a family of 4 for the entire time. Uk on the other hand starts at £1750 for the first person and additional costs of around 600 per adult and that's classing all children above children above age of 11 as adults.
