I don’t even know where to begin with this. Just horrific.

MercyBooth · 15/05/2021 02:59

@peasoup8 Id also like to see the numbers on how many women are going for their smear tests now compared with pre mask wear.

OP posts:
MercyBooth · 15/05/2021 03:00

WTF would they have done if a woman had vomited and choked?

I find smears very VERY painful and havent had one since 2014 I certainly couldnt do it in a mask. The response i got when i mentioned it on another thread was "perhaps you are wearing it over the wrong lips"

Breathing techniques are a recognised form of pain management that are hindered by masks.

Im child free by choice so havent had children so i can only imagine how bad this would be while giving birth.

And yet you get these messages. If she can deal with it so must the rest of us.

Oh, that’s good. I’ve been hoping for Sophie Turner’s input into my birth plan.

Racoonworld · 15/05/2021 07:53

Absolutely awful. I gave birth last summer, my mask was off before I’d even reached the assessment room. No one made me put it back on again the whole time I was there. I would have refused if they had.

GoddessKali · 15/05/2021 07:59

Jeez that’s awful!!

I was pregnant a few months back (sadly miscarried) and I couldn’t even wear a mask as it made me so faint and dizzy I started passing out so let alone in actual birth!
Our breath is sooo important to regulate our bodies and move energy / pain.

Wingingthis · 15/05/2021 08:02

Horrific. My baby was born end of April 2020 and looking bad it’s mad how different it was then. I wasn’t required to wear a mask at all even entering the hospital!

Bordois · 15/05/2021 08:05

I was permanently attached to the entonox nozzle during both my labours, which makes me wonder if women were also being denied access to pain relief.

Even so, its outrageous with or without that consideration

ZoeMaye · 15/05/2021 08:06

When I went for my smear test (mask on, knickers down which was so weird) it made me sympathise so much with women going through the maternity process and labor through covid s must be so dreadful. Being alone, in a mask, dehumanised in a way, it's been managed really badly. My heart also breaks for all those women struggling with post natal mental health and being so utterly isolated. I know that we needed to be minimising spread, but their could have been a better way, where these women and babies, and their partners and other DC too, could have Been prioritised a little bit more, just treated a little more humanely.

PomegranateQueen · 15/05/2021 08:07

I couldn't even tolerate clothes, I can't believe some women have been expected to labour in masks.

The inconsistency is a problem, I know a couple of women who have given birth recently and our area isn't making women wear masks. It seems like there is a postcode lottery.

Not sure it will be high numbers. There may be a backlog of catch up appointments when they weren’t actually doing them though but that’s a different matter.

The number of genuine exemptions I’d imagine is low and there will be considerations made. A smear takes just a few minutes, I was in and out in less than than five. You can also the test at home after buying it online.

Labour is very different and I have no idea of the actual rules but if you chose to get pregnant and need care in a pandemic then you do so knowing there are restrictions and policies in place to keep staff and other patients safe.

Oh FFS, not this rubbish again.

I think that poster mistyped and meant to say if you choose to be a healthcare professional and give maternal care then you do so knowing there are restrictions and policies in place to keep staff and patients safe. You know, since they were the ones not doing so.
IvysPoison · 15/05/2021 09:19

"Labour is very different and I have no idea of the actual rules but if you chose to get pregnant and need care in a pandemic then you do so knowing there are restrictions and policies in place to keep staff and other patients safe".

Do you actually believe this self-righteous bollocks or are you simply saying it because you're one of those miserable people who likes sticking the boot in to make yourself feel better?

RainbowCrayons · 15/05/2021 10:00

By that logic should anyone unsure of whether they could labour in a mask not get pregnant ever again incase there's a pandemic and they need care?

madroid · 15/05/2021 10:15

What would they do if the pregnant woman refused to wear a mask?

I honestly think the most important part of ante natal care in these times is assertiveness classes!

If you are pregnant the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby is to decide you will not be bullied and brief your partner to support you in that too.

SixDegrees · 15/05/2021 10:27

I vomited a lot throughout all of my labours. Bucketloads. I was finding it hard enough to manage that without a mask on, goodness knows how I’d have coped if the midwives had asked me to wear a mask.

And I don’t think it’s at all comparable to a smear test. Childbirth can take hours, even if it’s relatively fast, and even without vomiting your breathing’s going to be a lot heavier than normal.

A smear test, generally it’s over in 5 minutes and you’re just lying still, no physical exertion required. Unless someone’s got problems wearing a mask generally, I don’t see how it would be an issue.

stairway · 15/05/2021 15:22

I went into fall blown labour in the waiting room, the mask swiftly came off, not sure where it went but it wasn’t going back on.

MercyBooth · 15/05/2021 17:30

I find smears very VERY painful. Im aware labour is more painful but if i fancied a game of fucking top trumps i would have put it in my OP. And ppl wonder why the child free get so pissed off with parents sometimes. I wouldnt minimize your pain but thanks for the non reciprocation.

Racoonworld · 15/05/2021 20:45

No one is playing top trumps. You can’t even begin to compare the two, it’s like comparing a paper cut with your arm getting sawn off!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/05/2021 21:02

I'm finally getting my smear test in the near future. I got my letter in March 2020 so didn't get through the cycle before lockdown. My surgery contacted me and are putting on extra catch-up clinics. I explained that I would like the smear test but masks are an issue, both for me and being with others wearing them (communication difficulties and birth trauma. A sexual assualt hasn't helped as far as the smear is concerned.) which is why I've been holding off. They rang back a few days later and the nurse is willing to do it with visor only. She's fully vaccinated, I'm partially vaccinated.

It is utterly inhumane to inhibit labouring women's ability to breathe. I had two difficult labours and theatre births and what helped the second to be less traumatic than the first was a very supportive MW who did her best to make me comfortable and work with my body and talked me through what was happening when things reached a critical point and ended up in theatre again.

Birth is a point where women are very suceptible to trauma and having poor access to support from a familiar birth partners is already difficult enough (especially in long inductions) without the loss of autonomy to fulfill the basic function of breathing with the body's needs, and obstructing communication, both verbal and staff's ability to pick up non-verbal cues and changes in demeanour.

SemiFeralDalek · 15/05/2021 21:12

I gave birth (albeit in the bereavement suite) during the November lockdown in an area of high numbers at the time and was told as soon as we got in that we were absolutely free to take our masks off if we chose to.

I kept it on while the MW were in the room until it got a bit more sharp. I'm always sick with contractions and then I had gas and air so I wouldn't have been able to keep one on.

I'm very grateful I had MW and HCPs who were kind and compassionate and didn't enforce mask wearing. I feel so awful for the women who had to endure it.

MercyBooth · 15/05/2021 23:14

@Racoonworld Im aware of that. Ive had gallstones and ppl who have had those and given birth tell me that the former is worse.
