So, is Monday under threat? Change to school masks or hugs?

So when the government say they are effective that is what they mean

That was whole point of vaccination

To reduce nhs pressure

RedcurrantPuff · 15/05/2021 16:15

@Watapalava

Lightand

The papers are saying they may not stop transmission

They are expected to stop severe illness and death which is surely what matters

This is what Chris Whitty said I think
Watapalava · 15/05/2021 16:18

You’re right

But one dose is proven to prevent most severe illness and death

All vulnerables have been offered and had this one dose

Yes not all kids and under 40 have had it but only 440 people user 40 (that weren’t in the already vaccinated groups) were hospitalised during entire pandemic

So acfually it’s looking veryiey transmission won’t equal problems

Watapalava · 15/05/2021 16:18

Likely

And when you have to defer to *@PrincessNutNuts* who has started how many threads? You kind of lose most people, thankfully.
I've started 7 posts in total. Ever.

And yet SAGE say:
  1. Considering this, it is a realistic possibility that this scale of B.1.617.2 growth could lead to a very large increase in transmission. At this point in the vaccine roll out, there are still too few adults vaccinated to prevent a significant resurgence that ultimately could put unsustainable pressure on the NHS, without non-pharmaceutical interventions.
Watapalava · 15/05/2021 16:29

Sage who haven’t acfually got their models right once. yet have they?

RedcurrantPuff · 15/05/2021 16:32

Just reading the issue is less the vaccine itself being ineffective but more that it takes time to work.

Also JCVI talking about countless over 50s still being unvaccinated. I know some will be unable to have it medically but I fear that if people feel they are having their liberties curtailed to protect people who haven’t been arsed to get the vaccine it will cause a lot of backlash and anger.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/05/2021 16:34

You'd think so, yes, but it's surely not escaped anyone's notice that "the papers" always seek the most dramatic headline ... which work pretty well on those who don't understand the difference between transmission and severe illness, or perhaps just don't bother to think about it

Nobody with sense denies that Covid's a problem, but I'm not sure the constant wind-ups help. I'd say some of the media have been thoroughly irresponsible, but I'd probably be accused of the biggest understatement on MN ...

Watapalava · 15/05/2021 16:37

Exactly red

10,000 people in bolton in eligible groups haven’t been vaccinated

DisgracfuL

We do need to get on with our lives but at the same time I truly believe they should stop the easing on Monday and just hold off for another couple of weeks to control this new variant. We're so close to everyone being vaccinated and then things can resume.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2021 17:32

Just another few weeks. Where have I heard that before

Shell4429 · 15/05/2021 17:41

I can’t believe the level of ignorance and selfishness in some of these comments. Telling Boris to fuck off when he is just trying to protect everyone. I don’t understand how thick you have to be to think it’s okay to go against the advice of scientists just so that you can go to the pub or theatre and not wear masks. I am quite literally flabbergasted.

I wonder if you'd feel the same if your livelihood depended on you being able to open on Monday......

The inability of some people to see beyond their own circumstances has left me flabbergasted at times.

Tou really can't understand why people who have had their freedoms curtailed for 14 months want them back? And you call them thick? Hmm

BonnieDundee · 15/05/2021 17:46

The thought of Saint Boris trying to protect everyone Grin

What job do you do? Have you have reduced income for the most of the past 14 months?

Not sure I trust Boris et al too much tbh. He told us it was perfectly safe to send every child and school staff, regardless of age and vulnerability, back to school at the same time with no social distancing and no masks, with just some hand sanitiser and open windows as protection. That pretty much went against the advice and science put forward by WHO, etc He even spent thousands on media campaigns telling the country just how safe it would be. That worked well didn't it?

DelBocaVista · 15/05/2021 17:56

Have you have reduced income for the most of the past 14 months?

Exactly!
My friends run a pub. The support they received barely covered their rent and that stopped on 12th April because they have outside space - apparently this means they can open.
This outside space is a tiny car park so they had to spend a small fortune making it useable as a beer garden. When they have been able to open ( which, thanks to the lovely Yorkshire weather hasn't been as often as they'd like) they have been running at a loss.

They've borrowed money to buy food and drinks to open more fully on Monday. If that decision had been overturned I'm not sure what they would have done.

That is the reality for those in the hospitality industry.

MercyBooth · 15/05/2021 17:59

*But NONE of that prevents them having a FREE vaccine. The uptake is incredibly low in areas where the Indian variant of growing exponentially.

What's the excuse for that*

Maybe they took this Governments advice not to prioritize phones over food. So therefore cant book online.

You reap what you sow @AlmostSummer21

But there are huge numbers of pop up vaccination centres in these areas which don't require bookings.

No one needs an excuse not to have a medical procedure.

MercyBooth · 15/05/2021 18:23

@Shell4429 If sending Covid positive patients back into care homes without testing and slapping DNR orders on people without consent is your idea of protecting people id hate to see your idea of not protecting the public!!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/05/2021 18:35

No one needs an excuse not to have a medical procedure

FWIW I very much agree with this; however choices come with consequences and they're not always attractive

And what happens if minority communities become even more disproportionately affected when most others are vaccinated, both by the virus itself and by restrictions? Will folk say "Oh well, they had their choice", or will it somehow become everyone else's fault?

Frequentflier · 15/05/2021 18:42

I think we need a massive vax education programme in Bolton and other affected areas, and in minority communities nationwide. People must be persuaded that the vaccine is in their best interest. I say this as a member of this community.

Some may think this is racist; I do not think so.
