AIBU to have no sympathy for people who rushed to book holidays in Portugal...

... and are now moaning because Portugal haven't set their travel rules yet?

As soon as the UK announced that Portugal was on the green list, some people booked flights and holidays. Without checking whether Portugal would actually let them in... And now they're whingeing about it in the press!

God forbid anyone wants a holiday. A complete crime. Covid has made people turn into judgemental shits who think their decisions are better than anyone else’s.

Previous poster saying she has zero sympathy, reserving her sympathy for those who’ve lost jobs & had lives ruined by covid.. erm, do you know anyone in the tourist industry?! I do & it’s been devastating for them. The holiday industry relies on holiday makers. They were so hopeful for this year but my friends & her husbands jobs are gone if holidays don’t resume this year.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 15/05/2021 16:56

Well, well, they're allowed to enter. Way to go Portugal! Have fun, travellers! Smile

Pklf · 15/05/2021 17:49

You are being unreasonable. People like you have had an absolute field day over the last year. Anyone without family members in the Deity that is the NHS, who makes the error of vocalising missing friends bars or holidays, is target practice for your emotional clay pigeon shooting. I wouldn't be surprised if there were people who went around actively looking for actual or perceived transgressions, secretly feeling delighted when they were found (because unlike you, other people aren't perfect) and shouting "pull" for another target to be set up for your pleasure. This kind of reaction has ruined everything

Sparky888 · 15/05/2021 22:28

Some people have family in other countries who they haven’t been able to see for over a year ….. flights aren’t just for holidays.

Yes, you don't sound judgemental at all Smile

I can't see the point in these lists. All borders should stay closed everywhere until scientists are convinced the vaccine will work on the new strains

Well, that's not going to happen. Too bad. There will all be new strains. This is going nowhere. We can't continue to shut down the world for this.

@ThursdayWeld I was expected "sad face" stories when I opened that link, but didn't get it, so your post is a bit disingenuous.

I really want a holiday, I totally understand that people want to go away. I agree it was naive to book trips so close the the initial date, but if they also take out insurance (for example I understand that TIU has a "covid guarantee) then it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I don't have much sympathy for people who book trips and don't get insurance because anything could happen right now. But there's nothing wrong with being optimistic.

Roselilly36 · 16/05/2021 07:42

That’s mean OP, I feel sorry for anyone in this position, everyone wants life to be normal again,. Would I take the risk of booking a holiday abroad at the moment, no. But I certainly wouldn’t begrudge others from doing so.

SofiaMichelle · 16/05/2021 09:40

SAGE are putting pressure on now to not go ahead with tomorrow's relaxation of travel rules. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there's a change to the re-entry requirements when arriving back into the UK from any country, in the next few days.

God knows what that will mean for people travelling to 'green' countries tomorrow.

This India variant is really going to throw a spanner in the works, isn't it.

I couldn't find a link to the numpties complaining on BBC TV.

Everyone knows the rules can change at any point so if people go away on holiday and the rules change then so be it and they will have to deal with the consequences. No one needs a holiday and others deserve to be safe and have restrictions put in place if needed.

I don't begrudge them - I just have no sympathy for people who book holidays and spend money without checking the requirements of the country they've booked to, then go on national TV complaining about it!

They are allowed into Portugal from Monday now so it's not a case of sympathy anymore.

I would be nervous myself going abroad so soon but must admit have a holiday to the Canaries booked for the end of August when hopefully things will have settled down more. Not paid the hotel yet though, just the flights so hotel can be cancelled at short notice if we're not allowed to fly there.

Plump82 · 03/06/2021 13:47

So if the rumours are true, then in less than a month Portugal may be taken off the green list. This is what makes me so nervous to even consider going abroad. How quickly things can change.

Plump82 · 03/06/2021 13:48

Sorry should say after less than a month

halcyondays · 03/06/2021 14:15

It was always going to be a risk that places could be taken off the green list at any time.

Twiglets1 · 03/06/2021 15:05

Feel sorry for Portugal - I understand they have a spike largely due to a big football match being held there - though both teams were from the U.K. which is crazy in these current times

Its amazing how many issues football has caused during all this.
3cats2kids · 03/06/2021 15:26

I suspect a lot of countries will ban Brits as this new variant surges.

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 03/06/2021 15:31

Portugal was offering specific travel insurance for this very reason - they were very much encouraging tourists.

We have booked and will just reschedule if needs be 🤷🏼‍♀️

the80sweregreat · 03/06/2021 15:33

Why didn't they play the football last week in the UK? Two English clubs, plenty of big stadiums and easier for fans to get to.
Seemed common sense to me, but no, it had to be Portugal.
The Euros and the Olympics are scheduled to be going ahead too! It all seems like complete madness to me. I Can't get my head around this obsession with sport.

Money and diplomatic relations. Funny how Portugal was the only 'holiday' destination in Europe on the green list...

The one in Turkey with 2 UK teams could be moved to the UK because it would have been illegal under Covid restrictions but the UK government made travel to Portugal legal just in time for this one.

The travel for this football match was the biggest mass movement of UK population since the start of the pandemic.

The UK government never learns and seemingly doesn't care.

BJemptiedhell · 03/06/2021 15:38

BTW I like that the events are going ahead (apart from antivaxxing athletes who have chosen to refuse the vaccine in events where it is optional, e.g. football, rather than those for whom it is mandatory, e.g. Olympics).
But mass spectators are just not necessary.
I will enjoy watching these events safely on my sofa at home this summer.
