Can I drink before my vaccine?

I have my vaccine tomorrow afternoon but really fancy a glass of wine or two tonight. Is it okay to drink before you get the jab?

I had a few drinks the night before mine, I was fine. The night of my vaccine I didn't drink & went to bed with paracetamol taken, I was also fine the next day.
I know friends who drunk the night of getting the vaccine then woke up the next day not know if they were hungover or it was the vaccine so I wouldn't advise that

How would there be any wine left in your system by tomorrow afternoon?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm sure I read that alcohol lowers your immune system... or something?

There were early suggestions that you should abstain for 2 days before a jab and door two weeks afterwards because of any potential effects on the immune system but they were rapidly debunked.

123banana · 13/05/2021 15:52

Oh dear, just found this.

So, as far as alcohol is concerned, we advise that you consider not drinking for two days before, and up to two weeks after you’ve been vaccinated, to try to ensure your immune system is at its best to respond to the vaccine and protect you. But it’s really important to know that, even if you do drink, you’ll still benefit from having the jab, so please don’t turn it down.

Nah course it’s fine to have a wine or two. That’s really going to have shit all effect on your immune system.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 13/05/2021 16:04

I asked the GP when I had my jab if it mattered that I'd had wine the night before.

His response was "Nope! You can have some tonight as well"

PurpleDaisies · 13/05/2021 16:05

If this was a thing, don’t you think the NHS would be telling people before they went for their vaccines?

HairyFloppins · 13/05/2021 16:08

I'm having some tonight and tomorrow night. Mine is tomorrow.

Twickerhun · 13/05/2021 16:08

This is a common myth on mumsnet. I think pretty much debunked by good science as it really doesn’t make a difference beyond a mild theoretical possible impact.

123banana · 13/05/2021 16:08

True. I was just concerned as various health professionals have been quoted in the media advising not to drink.

As long as you don't drink during the appointment you'll be grand

Twickerhun · 13/05/2021 16:09

I had many glasses of wine either side of my vaccine and I’m still here. No idea if the vaccine worked obviously though

coffeefi · 13/05/2021 17:50

Abstain from drinking two weeks afterward? I'd rather not have it l. Crikey, I've had surgery and drank the next day

coffeefi · 13/05/2021 17:51

@BiggerBoat1 Love it!

Bluntness100 · 13/05/2021 17:52

No you’re fine, we had guests at the weekend and the day before my husbands, and he had more than a couple to be honest..😃

supersonicginandtonic · 13/05/2021 17:55

I work in substance misuse and helped out in the clinic where they were vaccinating the homeless in my city. My homeless, alcohol dependent, street drinkers who can easily consume 5 litres of 7.5-% cider a day, are all absolutely fine. A large majority were more than likely, intoxicated at their appointment also.

GintyMcGinty · 13/05/2021 17:59

If you needed to abstain from alcohol in advance you'd be told with your invite.

It's certainly NOT part of the NHS advice.

Bedsheets4knickers · 13/05/2021 18:40

I drank after my vaccine . I had a really awful night . I won't be doing it on my next one .

Mindymomo · 13/05/2021 19:29

I ate healthily and didn’t have any alcohol for 3 days before or after vaccine. Don’t know if it helped but I had zero after effects.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 13/05/2021 19:39

I'm in another country, but DH put his name down for a leftover jab last thing at a vaccination site and we were actually mid dinner party (outdoor) when he got the call, so he had to down his wine and hop in an Uber to sprint across town. He was fine.

WhiteChocTwix · 13/05/2021 19:39

OP you'll be fine. Don't get absolutely sloshed but a glass or 2 is going to be fine, if you fancy it. I'm 48 hours post Pfizer, glass of wine tonight, feel absolutely fine.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 13/05/2021 19:42

I did before and after.
Zero side effects.

SaskiaRembrandt · 13/05/2021 19:45

The thing about not drinking isn't about having side effects - that's all down to the exuberance of your immune system - it comes from an article from Drinkaware who insisted that even a drop of alcohol would result in the vaccine not working. Which isn't true. If you're a chronic alcoholic then yes, your immune system will be impaired, but if are a moderate drinker who has a glass of wine the day before the vaccine you'll be fine.
