Pfizer vaccine for a 39yo

Cassilis · 13/05/2021 12:10

Hi all, I've just been offered appointments for my 1st and 2nd jabs.

I've read online that 38 and 39yos (and those younger presumably) will be offered an alternative to the AZ jab.

Is there any way to find out which vaccine my local vaccination centre will be offering? WIBU to reject the AZ if offered it on the day if they have no alternatives? I called 119 but they only have automated messages and no one to speak to.

Thanks

Ffs don't know how many posts there have been saying exactly the same thing......

NO ONE UNDER 40 WILL RECEIVE THE AZ VACCINE!! END OF!!

The reason they say "alternative to AZ" is because there's more than 1 other available vaccine that is suitable. It DOES NOT mean you get a CHOICE of AZ or a another. There is no choice, you will be automatically allocated 1 of the alternative suitable vaccines.

Santastealer · 13/05/2021 13:12

As above!

Girlmama3 · 13/05/2021 13:13

If for any reason you are offered the AZ you can refuse and re book. You shouldn’t be but don’t think you have to have it x

Jeez no need to shout. The JCVI has said under 40s should be given an alternative “ where available and only if this does not cause substantial delays in being vaccinated.” Which isn’t definitive that no one under 40 will have it at all
Wellbythebloodyhell · 13/05/2021 13:16

@KFleming I work in a vaccine hub I can assure you no under 40s will be offered the AZ vaccine

Mosesello · 13/05/2021 13:23

@Wellbythebloodyhell
What would you do if a 39 year old arrived with her 40 year old dh? Would they be sent to have different vaccines or would you be able to give both the Pfizer?

Alone97 · 13/05/2021 13:30

My 20 year old was given astrazeneca last week, the nurse said they can give it if they haven't got an alternative.
But it was ultimately up to him what he wanted to do.

DixonD · 13/05/2021 13:32

That’s reassuring Well. I’ve booked this morning and asked on Facebook if they were doing Pfizer at the site I’ve booked for and got it rammed down my throat that they all had AZ there. Doesn’t mean they won’t be doing Pfizer there though Grin.

Thanks.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 13/05/2021 13:38

@Mosesello at the hubs I work at they only have 1 type of vaccine on any specific days so if you are both booked into the same clinic it's likely you'll both get Pfizer. Appreciate though that these changes were only brought in last minute so of course there still could be admin anomalies in the booking system ( or human error if booked over the phone) so if you both did turn up and it was AZ that day only the 40yo would be vaccinated the 39yo would be asked to make an alternative appointment. Obviously I can only tell you what would happen in my area. On booking a vaccine is allocated to you, its rare to have spares or extras just in case as potentially these could end up going to waste.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 13/05/2021 13:39

@Alone97 the guidance only changed over the weekend so last week that scenario would have been plausible

RoseDog · 13/05/2021 14:42

I'm 39 and just got my appointment for next week and the information book only mentions AZ and it won't be given to under 30s, I'm quite wary of having AZ due to blood clotting and family history, I'm in 2 minds if to have it or not if that's what's offered on the day!

minniemomo · 13/05/2021 14:46

My dd had AZ, they are still vaccinating under 40's she's due her second dose soon and I checked.

Stop worrying, AZ is far better than getting covid, the Indian variant is spreading

chesirecat99 · 13/05/2021 15:04

DS22 asked 119 this question at the weekend. He was told that the system would automatically only offer him appointments at centres that have Pfizer or Moderna because of his age. He hasn't had his appointment yet so I can't guarantee that is correct.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 13/05/2021 15:10

@minniemomo that's true anyone under 40 who has also received their 1st dose of AZ will also receive their second dose of AZ.
@RoseDog if you have made your appointment since the weekend then you will have been allocated a Pfizer/moderna dose, if you made your appointment before the weekend its possible you have booked into an AZ clinic if that's the case you'll be asked to reschedule

I'm in Scotland, they just send out appointments and as they haven't updated the information booklet I'm guessing my appointment was already set up before it changed!

ureterr1blemuriel · 13/05/2021 19:54

I’m 39 and have had the AZ jab! I was given the choice of rebooking but I went ahead anyway.

IndigoC · 13/05/2021 22:58

I’m not sure when it turned into no under 40 will have AZ. It was meant to be a preference, dependent on supply. It’s probably for the best, but the disconnect between the public messaging and the actual system is interesting.

Clearly the powers that be have more concerns about AZ than they are willing to let on.

TokenGinger · 13/05/2021 23:02

When I booked mine, my confirmation text told me which jab I'd be getting (age 31).

WeeM · 13/05/2021 23:07

I’m over 40 and got mine last week-everyone was getting the Pfizer. I was surprised as thought they’d be saving them for the under 40s, so I’m guessing they’re not anticipating a shortage.

Oh FFS. Look at the news in India, learn to understand statistics and risk and take whatever you're offered with gratitude.

So sick of this privileged, entitled attitude to vaccines.

kimlo · 14/05/2021 07:56

dh is 38. He has just had his appointment cancelled because they haven't recived their pfizer delivery.

He would take AZ of he could, but they wouldn't offer it. I'm waiting for my second AZ.

JellyBabiesFan · 14/05/2021 13:42

Get off your high horse. Where people have been advised by the government to have an alternative to AZ, they are prefectly within their right to decline the AZ.

WaterBottle123 · 14/05/2021 20:49

@JellyBabiesFan they haven't been advised though. The gov has had to pander to the hysteria over AZ in order to ensure ppl still get jabbed.
