Could it be that the Indian variant, like the Brazilian and SA variant is nothing to seriously worried about?

There was a lot of talk a few months ago of the Brazilian and South African variant.. but neither have completely messed things up for us yet. Could it be the same with the Indian one ? Fingers crossed !

I have just put this on another thread. It is a fact checking article. Covers a few areas of concern about the situation in India. Like are young people more affected etc. Worth a read if you are worried about this stuff.

I forgot to add the linkGrin

@TruelyWonder

To be fair some people work in India etc.

My brother inlaw has just told us this week his work colleague that was helping in India died.

The man was only 32 years old. We have no idea if any underlying health conditions but very sad and very worrying.

So sad. The poor man and his family.

Wrt not knowing if he had underlying conditions. That's the thing. Not saying it was the case with him, but lots of people have undiagnosed underlying conditions.

Thanks for the links.

Wtf is going on? London has huge number of Indian strain cases and rapid spread. Higher risk because of being frontline with Heathrow airport. Some London boroughs were still on 45+ last weekend. Why hasn't more vaccine supply been urgently sent to London, as it seems to have been for Bolton and Blackburn?
Watapalava · 13/05/2021 17:40

Bolton, Blackburn and even Preston really have been consistently high throughout and largely its due to reduced uptake of vaccine from the high numbers of ethnic minorities. No amount of lockdown is helping those areas so vaccination is prob last resort

Tealightsandd · 13/05/2021 18:43

Vaccine hesitancy is highest in London. It's also has had one of the highest death rates of the UK. Even with the artificially lowered rates due to reporting London boroughs separately instead of the city as the one interlinked place that it is.

Of course it's also more of risk to everyone else too. More people travel in and out of London to and from the rest of the UK than Bolton, Blackburn, and Preston.

looks like these areas have highest rates in the uk currently

Watapalava · 13/05/2021 18:53

news.sky.com/story/covid-19-where-are-the-coronavirus-hotspots-in-the-uk-12303591

see here that the north case rate is much worse than london

Tealightsandd · 13/05/2021 19:04

Like I said. Splitting London - a very interconnected city - into individual boroughs gives an inaccurate picture with artificially lower rates.

It's known the rates are high and the spread is fast in London. It was reported as so...until it was excluded from surge vaccinations.

Every wave, London has been hit very very hard. Each time there's been frantic denial and refusal to give Londoners the same level of protection as elsewhere in the UK.

It's not going to change. Londoners won't be given the protection everywhere else has. Because of the unholy mix of people with vested interests in playing down London's risks. There's the people who make money out of London (at the cost of Londoners), and then the people eaten up with misplaced jealousy over London having being the centre of suffering over the past few decades.

nordica · 13/05/2021 20:29

London probably also has more young people in shared houses/HMOs so household transmission is very likely.

I've had to take public transport a few times recently and especially on the tube it's mostly younger people out and about. And many masks just worn around necks...

Tealightsandd · 13/05/2021 21:25

Yes. And because of the unique housing crisis in London, huge numbers in HMOs and shared houses aren't so young. Lots of middle aged and older - many of them clinically vulnerable...

There's also many thousands of families living in temporary accommodation - two thirds of all homeless families are in London. Sometimes this accommodation is shared with several other families.

Ideal conditions for a virus to spread fast.

PrincessNutNuts · 13/05/2021 21:35

My family say cases in Hart in Hampshire have almost tripled in a week, but they don't know of any special measures that are happening or if this is the Indian variant.

It's pretty leafy and well to do in that area. Housing is pricey though so perhaps there's more shared housing than I/they know about.

PrincessNutNuts · 13/05/2021 21:59

The South African variant is the purple line and the Indian variant is orange.

Could it be that the Indian variant, like the Brazilian and SA variant is nothing to seriously worried about?

That is what the overall cases line looked like in India as the variant took off, like a vertical wall Sad
PrincessNutNuts · 13/05/2021 22:06

@picturesandpickles Yep. Grim.

"The UK doesn't have pandemic border control. 'Red list" passengers mix with others in airports, etc. Then travel from the airport on busy public transport to do 'home quarantine'".

You're right about the potential for mixing, but Red list passengers do not do home quarantine, for them it's off on in a bus for managed quarantine at an airport hotel.

Pootle40 · 13/05/2021 22:35

Oh god what has become of us......MN full of obsessive chat about variants.

Sorry my post was unclear. I know the red list do hotel quarantine. But the other arrivals mix with red (for hours and hours).

It’ll be all forgotten about in a fortnight in favour of the next doom mongering tactic.

RedcurrantPuff · 13/05/2021 23:07

Yeah. Sure. I’ll believe it when i see it. Gov have cried wolf once too often on all this crap now.

RedcurrantPuff · 13/05/2021 23:10

Can anyone explain why it’s only now we have vaccines we seem to have variants?

Basically the government didn’t care enough about the Indian variant to prevent it seeding so why I’m expected to give a shit I don’t know.
