Anyone had Covid after first vaccine?

I had the first Astra back in March. Now on day 3 of a sore throat, headache, nausea, fatigue and sore stomach. Tickly cough that started last night and constant smell of burnt matches. I can’t get tested until tomorrow evening (don’t live in uk and apparently covid respects bank holidays here Hmm). My son’s nursery has been rife with covid recently so it’s possible he’s brought it home. Also still hoping it’s just a cold.

Just wondering if anyone has tested positive after first vaccine and how you got on? I had horrendous side effects after the vaccine so hoped it had worked well. Sigh.

I haven't,but one of my colleagues picked it up in the week after her first (pfizer) vaccine. She was poorly for a couple of weeks but managed at home with paracetamol and rest. She is well now and no long Covid symptoms.

electricdreamssheep · 03/05/2021 07:17

I only had mine last week so can't help on that front.

But theoretically you should be experiencing milder symptoms because of the vaccine. Although I'm sure you're not feeling as though they're mild!

So try not to worry too much (I am prone to a good panic). You have a good dose of antibodies working their magic. Look after yourself. x

Certainly in the UK there are people catching covid after the first vaccine but all the research is showing that it's not as bad and only a tiny number have ended up in hospital.

Statistically there will always be some catching it after both jabs as it's not 100% effective

Schrutesbeets · 03/05/2021 07:22

Well considering AZ is only predicted to reduce transmission by 30% and you've only had 1 dose, plus your sons nursery being rife - it's fairly possible you've got it. If you're healthy and young I'm sure you'll be fine. Get tested when you can and get some rest.

I don't know the exact figures but as the small children haven't been vaccinated the transmission %age isn't the important figure is it?

The chance of catching covid after 1 done is reduced by nearer twice that on the latest research I believe.

Schrutesbeets · 03/05/2021 07:31

Have you got a source to that please?

QueenStromba · 03/05/2021 07:48

Is there a lot of the SA variant where you are? AZ has only 10% efficacy against mild to moderate disease in that variant.

MRex · 03/05/2021 08:15

As your first dose was in March, you should have a good dose of antibodies. Your risk of getting symptomatic covid is 60-65% and there are still other diseases, so it may not be covid. If it is covid then starting out with some antibodies should help you to fight it off. Paracetamol and lots of water either way, and hope you feel better soon.

My DH tested positive 18 days after first jab. Completely isolated him and no one caught it out him. Thankfully mild symptoms

Aurorie11 · 03/05/2021 08:18

Off not out

It reduces rather than eliminates risk, you are very unlikely to have serious disease if you caught it more than 3 weeks after you received the vaccine. The aim of the vaccine is to stop serious disease, they know it doesn't eliminate 100% of cases but latest figures were better than they thought, published earlier this week.

DinosaurDiana · 03/05/2021 08:44

No.
my work colleagues have had both jabs and nine of us got Covid before or after jabs.

This one is an assumption - whereas there was research published by PHE which says it reduces transmission between 38-49 percent. Retrospectively, based on who's been vaccinated.
PiggyPlumPie · 03/05/2021 08:47

A friend's daughter did and said the after effects of the first jab were worse than the actual covid symptoms.

That's about transmission from a vaccinated person after catching covid. Rates of catching covid fell by 65% after first dose: www.bmj.com/content/373/bmj.n1068.

Remmy123 · 03/05/2021 08:52

My friend got it after first jab - felt like bad flu

Okay so 38% rather than 31%?
Not a great deal of difference and v possible to still contract C19.

No. 38-49 percent. That's very different than what you said.
