Arthritis symptoms after AZ? Anybody else?

FrozenVag · 01/05/2021 22:52

I had my jab in 21thApril

Every night I have arthritic pain in different areas.

Friday - right leg felt like 👍 had arthritis in my ankle
Yesterday my left shoulder felt dislocated
Today my right thumb - I can’t even type

Anybody else?
My husband is a super fit runner and has had constant pain in his hip since jab

Anybody else had similar?

I have RA and after my first AZ I had all the classic fluey side effects plus a flare about 24 hours later. It subsided after a week but it was a nasty one.

Joint pain is a classic AZ side effect though so it could just be that, but a bit prolonged maybe? There's no chance you could have undetected inflammatory arthritis is there - have you had any symptoms previously?

PastelLampshade · 02/05/2021 09:25

Funny you mention this op, I was about to start my own thread in general health about joint pain in one of my fingers. No swelling but feels really bruised. Had it atleast a week! 😣

daytimeknitter · 02/05/2021 09:33

My DP had 8 weeks off sick with Reactive Arthritis following first AZ. Mainly in his knee but affected neck, wrists, ankles, elbows and fingers too. He literally couldn't walk. Needed three courses of steroids to get on top of it. Yellow carded and certified by consultant as direct AZ adverse reaction. He had the second jab two weeks ago. Joints have been better but he's very breathless this time.

Cheeeeislifenow · 02/05/2021 09:35

I have arthritis and since my first Jab at the beginning of April I have had a terrible flare up. It's psoriatic arthritis and my psoriasis on my skin has also been freaked. It could of course just be correlation.

Onetoomuch · 02/05/2021 09:38

Ended up in A/E with inappropriate sinus tachycardia 12 days post jab (although symptoms started about 10 days after). Had long covid but pretty much recovered by the time I had the vaccination. Medics think it might be an immune response to the jab or just a relapse as I was probably doing too much. Not sure if they yellow carded it.

hammyhamster72 · 02/05/2021 09:41

I'm so glad someone posted this - I've had an arthritis flare since the jab too. I have osteoarthritis in my thumb which normally doesn't trouble me much but has been quite problematic since the jab on 16th April. It could be coincidence but I'm not sure

FrozenVag · 02/05/2021 09:47

@TheVampiresWife
@PastelLampshade

Thanks - that’s kind of reassuring in a way

I have psoriasis and in general don’t have any joint pains ever - I feel like this jab has pushed me right into old age 😂

But it also makes me wonder how severe I would have had coronavirus too!

@daytimeknitter
So sorry your DP had had such a bad time of it. Does he have other autoimmune diseases?

I have RA and after my first jab I had a flare, after the second I was OK. This was the phzier vaccine

daytimeknitter · 02/05/2021 10:11

No other autoimmune illnesses. His reaction was completely out of the blue and started the day after the vaccine. He's much better now thanks!

Iwant2move · 02/05/2021 10:19

My, as yet undiagnosed, arthritis has been bad since my AZ in March. I thought I was just having a flare up and it was coincidental. My fingers, thumbs and big toes all became very painful, hot and swollen and the pain was symmetrical across the right and left finger and toe joints. I have other autoimmune conditions.

Lupinhere37 · 05/05/2021 22:00

I have spondyloarthropathy, presumed to be AS, which was diagnosed just before the pandemic started. I caught what I assume to have been COVID, due to classic symptoms such as breathlessness and altered taste/smell. March 2020, so no tests routinely available then. When these symptoms appeared, the inflammatory joint symptoms disappeared until I had my first AZ jab in March 2021. They’re now back full force.
Still glad I had my jab; definitely having my second. But the jab certainly triggered the symptoms all over again. I’ve had the symptoms for years, so quite pleased to have had a year’s respite before the jab.

FrozenVag · 08/05/2021 20:42

I’m really suffering tonight and all I did was drill a couple of holes for a curtain pole

I’m now in loads of pain

It seems to come on every night, something different hurts

I feel like I’ve brought arthritis or tendinitis on myself

How are you doing @Lupinhere37? Are your symptoms settling?

PA is an auto immune condition so it may well be temporarily affected by the vax I'd imagine.

Certainly having covid itself has a huge impact on my PA. I had a terrible flare up requiring liquid morphine, as my normal meds weren't touching it, and steroid injections to sort it - took over 3 months to get on top of.

Neonprint · 08/05/2021 21:25

So you mean you have joint pain? All joint pain is not arthritis. From what you are saying you don't have arthritis normally?

This happened to me after my first vaccine. It's just your immune response. You haven't got arthritis from the vaccine. That sounds a bit dramatic of you. If it is not better after a month maybe see your GP.

Lupinhere37 · 08/05/2021 21:47

@FrozenVag, you mention the pain feels like tendonitis, which can be consistent with conditions such as psoriatic arthritis.
@FrozenVag, if you’re experiencing these symptoms for much longer, I think it wise to consult your GP. Could be purely coincidental that you’re having these symptoms but already having psoriasis puts you at higher risk of developing arthritis type conditions, that will probably need treating.
Hopefully it will all go again but if it doesn’t, please see your GP or tell your dermatologist.
My symptoms are bad tonight. I’ve done loads of housework today and my heels and ankles are on fire, as are some of my fingers. I woke up as stiff as a board this morning, which is quite typical with this condition and I seem to have been paying the price all day today! My pain is always far worse at the end of the day; has been so for several years now. I was talking to a rheumatology nurse yesterday who didn’t seem at all surprised that the jab has triggered the symptoms again. They’re showing no signs of going at all; in fact they’re getting worse.

FrozenVag · 08/05/2021 21:48

You’re very condescending and rude, @neonprint

I had a bout of arthritis before over a decade ago, I know exactly what the pain is like thankyou

I am currently unable to walk my dog, cook, iron, drill a hole etc without being crippled by pain come nighttime

Not dramatic.

@FrozenVag that doesn’t sound good at all; sorry to hear that. You’re sounding exactly as I am after a busy day. I really hope it gets better for you soon. It’s exhausting, isn’t it?

Me too, in a flare at the mo, forgot how rough it is.
FrozenVag · 09/05/2021 09:05

Have either of you tried diet to sort this out?

I might do a week of juice fasting to get the inflammation down

It cured my psoriasis over a decade ago
I love inflammatory foods sadly which I’m sure won’t be helping 🙄

@Lupinhere37

Can I just as what’s the best painkiller to use? I have a whole array from a slipped disc years ago

Tried gabpentin last night and it did nothing

OP posts:
Lupinhere37 · 09/05/2021 12:06

Hi @FrozenVag - I don’t think gabapentin will work for this as it treats neuropathic pain and the arthritis is almost certainly inflammatory. My rheumatologist has prescribed a COX inhibitor but I’d rather not take them. I have started the anti inflammatory diet but am struggling with it. Am also going to order tumeric supplements today, as a few people have recommended these and there seems to be some substance behind this.
I tend to use ice on the tendonitis symptoms and also find my hand pain is relieved if I put on rubber gloves and then hold them in hot water ( kinder to the skin! )
I find the pain tolerable and so I’ve learned to live with it; it’s just annoying!

@MummaPI hope this flare gets controlled for you soonSmile

Kyph · 09/05/2021 13:45

I have rheumatoid and osteoarthritis and both flared up after both jabs. Might be coincidence as flares are unpredictable.
My main take from this is thank goodness for the vaccine because who knows how badly my immune system would react to covid.

Kyph · 09/05/2021 13:48

Just spotted this. Inflammatory arthritis is always worse in the morning so this suggests to me that whatever your joint pain is, it's not inflammatory. This is a good thing.

This isn't always the case for me.

I have PA. this is an inflammatory arthritis.
My pain levels after a day of doing stuff is almost always worse as the day goes in and I am using the joints more.
The stiffness is often worse in the morning for me, but not the pain.
