DM side effects 2nd jab - PIC WARNING

Forestiere · 26/04/2021 20:31

Hi there,
DM is 73, she had her 2nd jab a week ago (AZ one.) A few days ago she started having severe itching and her skin went bruised looking - that's her arm but it's all over her. I called 111 and DM saw a GP who ran some blood tests which were thankfully normal so he said it's probably a reaction to the jab and to take an allergy tab each day until its gone.
Mum's been doing this but her itching is unbearable, it's keeping her up all night. She's using loads of Dermol lotion, E45 etc and Magicool spray, does anyone have any suggestions on anything else she could try?
Tia x

Try Eurax cream, it's great for itching

WonkyWhiteLavender · 26/04/2021 20:34

I can't suggest anything, but just to add that I am experiencing a lot of itching after my jab too. I'm sitting here with a jumper on that never usually itches and it's driving me crazy.

Camomile Lotion? My mum put that on us when we had Chickenpox. Ask the pharmacist for it, reasonable price.

AllTheWorldIsGreen · 26/04/2021 20:38

A bicarbonate of soda solution can be amazing on painful itches and it's safe to use in delicate areas like eyes.

gamerchick · 26/04/2021 20:38

E45 itch relief is good. I'm using it a fair bit atm. Also showering using aqueous cream. My itching is caused by peri though.

Gothichouse40 · 26/04/2021 20:38

Apologies not Camomile, CALAMINE LOTION!!!

Forestiere · 26/04/2021 20:39

Thanks - I've just ordered some for Mum. Hopefully it helps, feel so sorry for her.

An antihistamine like cetirizine or loratidine might help.

Forestiere · 26/04/2021 20:41

I've ordered the Eurax and calamine lotion, it's coming tomorrow, fingers crossed they work. Cheers everyone 👍

Reporting to Yellow Card Scheme - MRHA would be useful OP
Hope your mum feels better soon 💐

Violetroselily · 26/04/2021 20:53

Eurax is remarkable. Hope she feels better soon.

Squaffle · 26/04/2021 21:04

Gosh your poor Mum! Piriton is great for itching and might help her sleep if it’s keeping her awake: it doesn’t make DH drowsy but it does me! Good luck, hope she’s better soon.

LemonCake79 · 26/04/2021 21:09

Your poor mum. In addition to the suggestions for creams what about a wet towel round it? I used to use a wet tea towel when I had really itchy skin during pregnancy.

Nootkah · 26/04/2021 21:10

Poxclin is a mousse for chickenpox itching. Its ace. Is she on blood thinners? Looks like she's scratched so hard she's beuising herself.

Hyacinth88 · 26/04/2021 21:11

Oh what a shame.
Piriton should work for an allergy

Alonim · 26/04/2021 21:31

What a shame!

This isn’t just mild itching, it’s bruising all over too. Am I right OP?

How is this in any way acceptable? Not trying to panic you OP. I’m just shocked at the complacency of people over this.

Forestiere · 26/04/2021 21:34

Thanks all. Yes I think the GP was reporting it as a potential side effect, she was fine after the 1st jab so we were expecting the same again. Thanks for all the ideas, especially the wet tea towel tip, great idea which I didn't think of. 💐 To you all x

What did the Dr say about the bruising?

MeadowLines · 26/04/2021 21:39

Does she have any porridge oats, put them in a muslin or sock and run the bathwater through them and soak in them for a while, its good for itchiness. Poor DM it looks very uncomfortable

I honestly think the same? I have seen quite a few posters now with photos of brushing like this after first or second dose. Why is this happening with a vaccine? Don’t recall hearing about any babies or toddlers ever having brushing like this after childhood vaccines?
MercyBooth · 27/04/2021 19:27

@Alonim @OnTheBrink1 Im finding it a bit worrying too.

Interesting- I also had a prickly itch after the AZ. It was 6 weeks ago now and has almost gone away now now. I've been using E45 which helps. Until now I hadn't heard of anyone else with the same issue.
Am hoping it won't happen with jab 2.
Fingers crossed your DM feels better soon.

bookworm1632 · 27/04/2021 20:01

An antihistamine injection might help.

She needs to go to A&E really and get someone to take a proper look. Her GP sounds a bit useless tbh.

Otherwise ice packs may help - I bet the skin feels hot to the touch? Make sure the ice pack isn't directly against the skin - some material in between, and use for 20 mins on, 20 mins off.

You can also get cooling sprays but be careful with these as they may make it worse.

user1471453601 · 27/04/2021 20:08

I have a very reactive skin and a couple of things that you may find useful are;
Check that none of her shower wash contains SLS (sodium lau something or other). If it does stop using it.
Showering ( in luke warm water, and quickly) using E45 bath oil.

I had AZ, but I was lucky in not having side affects. I really feel for your mum, a couple of years ago my medication was changed and I ended up with hives all over my body. I'm sorry to say, nothing worked. I could, by and large, deal with things during the day. At night it was just terrible.
