Alternatives to AstraZeneca vaccine for under 40s “could be considered” amid rise in blood clots

This is concerning, especially as there is limited research into combining vaccinations. I feel that the trust in vaccination is being eroded. I have always been pro vacc but feeling much less so atm.
I'm not sure I will get my second jab now.

But what if you are a healthy 40 something? I've not had mine yet as all appointments are 20 plus miles away and now I'm not sure. Why do our goverment keep increasing the age, when other governments have it set at a higher cut off? Who's right?

Cherrycee · 06/05/2021 21:37

I'm happy for all of you in your 30s who can now get an alternative.

I'm in Ireland and I was very relieved a few weeks ago when our regulator restricted AZ to 60+. However they have since backtracked a bit by lowering the age to 50, and have stated that AZ and J&J can be given to under 50s in certain circumstances. The head of our health service has pretty much confirmed that he wants to use that loophole to offer those vaccines more widely to under 50s, so I'm a bit concerned again.

I’ve also been quietly reading this thread every day. I’m 36, in an area where 30s are already being vaccinated and was called several weeks ago. I’ve been delaying booking my appointment as have been agonising over whether to “gamble” with AZ which is what is being given here currently. This thread has been a huge source of comfort that I’m not the only one who was feeling extremely nervous about the situation, so thank you to everyone who has been posting.

@And48

I turned 40 2 weeks ago and booked my 1st vaccine this morning....I wonder if there will be a cut off date for turning 40 or whether it will be your age on the day that determines which vaccine you get.
@And48 I am in the same position, i have mine booked for Monday but i think they have just switched to AZ at the centre i was going to. I am going to cancel and rebook and hope i can get a different vaccine at some point.

@Rainbowsandstorms

So happy to hear that this is being changed. Are there many people here who are now in an age group where it’s no longer recommended but are still due their second dose? I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. There wasn’t sufficient data re the risk of the first dose when I had it and I don’t think there will be sufficient data regarding the risks of the second in my age group as it’s thankfully no longer recommended.
I'm afraid they might still offer you AZ as this was your first dose. I went for my second dose last week and expressed my concerns. They told me that even people in their 20s would be getting AZ for their second dose if they had AZ for their first dose. Unless, of course, they change their recommendations and pursue the mixing method, like Germany dies for the younger age group.

@daffyluck as if turning 40 this year wasn't bad enough 🤣

@Nofriend have you been able to find out much about how long immunity is likely to last with the one dose? I know it’s at least 16 weeks but am yet to find out more about the purpose of the second dose. I’m unsure if it’s designed to increase the percentage of people who develop antibodies or if immunity falls off a cliff at a certain point without the second dose. I know the Johnson and Johnson one also uses an androvirus vector and is just one dose, I’m hoping this is a positive thing.

no MHRA update today. They usually come on a thursday. Did the one last week say they wouldnt report this week?

Carefulvulvadriver · 10/06/2021 22:12

It’s here
www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting

Rate is up again to 14.2 per million doses
I didn’t have time to read it last week, so don’t know if the detail on second doses was in that too, but there is a little bit of analysis in there about second doses, which I won’t try and summarise tonight
