How on earth are India going to get there numbers down? If they impose to harsher lockdown people will starve to death. I think virus was quietly spreading in February when everyone was saying how well India was doing.

@TeamCuthbert

Why did it suddenly blow up? India seemed to be doing well. What happened?
Their government wanted you to believe they were doing so well.

Things have come to a catastrophic crescendo in such a way that they can no longer ignore this dire situation. This new variant seems to have affected their numbers as quickly as our Kent version did in December.

Throw in poor hygiene, overcrowding, no risk mitigation, denial from government and deprivation, you soon have a disaster brewing that will soon become out of control.

Yes the UK strain is one of the major issues for India (only the UK refers to it as the 'Kent' strain).

Africa was less affected by the first wave of covid

Many African countries did the same as Australia, New Zealand, and East Asia. Restricted borders, real quarantine, lots of mask adherance.

10 million people went to a religious festival a few days ago, Modi encouraged it, it was supposed to be postponed until next year. Can you imagine a crowd of 10 million 😮 even without Covid

I heard an Indian lady on the radio say that this particular festival was actually brought forward and based in the lunar calendar should have been next year. It was decided to bring it forward for some good PR around the election as they’d been doing so well with covid cases.

Happy to be corrected on that but the lady I listened to sounded very convincing.

Isn't that because there have been other variants of concern named after the place they were first found, but as the Kent variant is the only one which became a problem the rest of the world doesn't need to differentiate.

Things only seem to be getting worse, based on the news today

Yes it was supposed to be in 2022 but the Kumbh Mela was brought forward to 2021.
Update on my friend’s mum: they finally got her some oxygen and she’s stable. But they hospital want them to arrange home oxygen and take her home and vacate the bed because she’s not critical. But for tonight she’s fine.
