Rules that make no sense

My DH is seeing friends at the pub this weekend, outside and there will be 6 of them. All within the rules, yes. Except what about social distancing. They will be sat at a picnic bench, 6 grown men.

I get that pubs need to open but the rule in gardens is 6 or 2 households which we do but we are sitting very far apart from people not in our household. At pubs, they are sat very close.

I have and do follow all the rules because I believe that's what I have to do but there are some really strange ones. What other rules do you wish you could ask the scientists what their reasoning is for allowing it, not allowing it?

Most of our nursery’s rules make no sense. It’s a lovely nursery and they’ve managed to keep it very normal for the children but it’s like they were told that they had to come up with at least one page of covid rules and just picked at random. Children aren’t allowed bags so you bring child’s coat etc not in a bag and hand it over at the door. They’re a bit obsessed with soft furnishings in general and took all the cushions away and banned comforters for a while though did relent as long as comforters are kept at nursery - there is now a bag where all the children’s comforters are kept together rather than them going home for the night. They are quite strict on parents not going in and masks on pick up etc while the pictures of my child the other day were him sharing his cup with another child, children baking together all with hands in same mixing bowl and two children seemingly licking the same toy at the same time! They also all “wash” their hands in the same bowl at the same time huddled round in a little circle. I don’t mind at all - at least he’s happy and it’s normal inside but the idea that it’s covid secure because there’s no cushions is a joke. That said they haven’t had a case yet.

My kids couldn’t have a school photo together as they’re in separate class bubbles, despite living in the same house and sleeping in the same bedroom every night. If one gets a cough they have to stay home but the other one can still go into school. Makes no sense.

Lockdownbear · 20/04/2021 23:47

We weren't allowed a photographer in the school never mind getting kids together for a photo.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/04/2021 23:55

When the dc went back to school only 2 people could meet outside for exercise.
Dd walks back from school with 2 friends. That was in theory illegal. But it was OK for them to be in class together and sit together at break. Confused

Bearclaw · 20/04/2021 23:57

The rules are about reducing risk. People complaining they can see a colleague at work but they can’t see their mum. That’s because it’s essential for you to go to work but it’s not essential for you to see your mum. Reducing the total number of people you’re in contact with will reduce spread.

RedcurrantPuff · 21/04/2021 00:00

Oh yeah let’s not forget the “substantial meal” and that you could walk with another person but sitting on a bench with a tea was a picnic and illegal

I’d love to know how many infections these absolutely ludicrous rules actually prevented.

Bearclaw · 21/04/2021 00:03

The substantial meal was to prevent people having a piss up or going on a pub crawl.

RedcurrantPuff · 21/04/2021 00:06

Yes but when it was confirmed a scotch egg was a “substantial meal” it all got a bit silly

@Pissedoff1234

I think my point is that it is probably not great to have 6 people squashed up on a bench and some people will be sensible and not do this. I do think that even those who are fully observing the rules will be more likely to do this because it is classed as being in the rules. So before there were those that were breaking the rules and they still will. But there were those that were sticking with the rules because they were worried and those that did so because they like to do the right thing. The latter will now not exercise caution because it's in the rules.
The sensible thing would be to not meet in a group of 6, just because government say you can, doesn't mean you have too. Far more sensible to just meet in a smaller group if social distancing can't take place.

GPs “working from home” whilst nearly every other nhs worker and supermarket worker etc continued to go into work and put themselves at risk. And many GPs not going back properly even when some office workers went in.
Being a GP isn’t a job you can effectively do from home in my opinion. I think people have the right to see a doctor face to face and the gp phoning you when you may not be in private is not an effective substitute for an appointment. Plenty of people were sent to A&E unnecessarily by GPs who only spoke to patients on the phone and I’m sure many cancers and mental health problems will not have been spotted/treated effectively due to people not wanting a virtual appointment.

LeopardSheet · 21/04/2021 00:34

Also a lot of PPE, even in hospitals, doesn’t seem to be that effective and causes lots of unnecessary plastic waste. My brother works in A&E and he has to wear a new pair of latex gloves for each patient, and wash his hands in between (they didn’t used to wear gloves for most patients just wash hands). Thousands of gloves are binned and they don’t do anything to stop spread. I believe those plastic aprons that cover some areas of hospital workers clothes (cover their top but not trousers or shoulders) do nothing to prevent spread and are just to reassure people that measures are being taken.

I run a little charity shop (not in UK) and with the money we sterilise stray cats or rehome abandoned cats. We've had to close for three lockdowns in the last 12 months and could go under. We owe 4 grand to the vet and I've had to start saying no to cats in need. But the posh chocolate shop in town is "essential".

insurancedrama · 21/04/2021 01:02

@Icannever

My favourite so far was before Christmas kids could bring games into play for the last day of school but they had to bring them in three days before to quarantine them. When ds came home from school I asked what he had played and he said”Twister”! 😂😂 Just love the fact they were allowed to play twister but had to quarantine the game. It’s still making me laugh now
Love this! Our school - no school bags allowed, but could bring a carrier bag?
insurancedrama · 21/04/2021 01:12

My baby was due a hearing check as there were some concerns (just before lockdown 1)...they wanted to do a consultation by phone during lockdown. Babies were also counted for lot of last year, so when we were allowed to meet up with someone not in our household...I couldn't go for a walk with someone with my non crawling baby! The rule of six thing last year was daft where two families couldn't meet up outside, but I could meet as many groups of six inside as I liked!!!

MaudesMum · 21/04/2021 08:17

My dentist is open for check-ups. My vet isn't. Really can't see the logic in that!

StarCat2020 · 22/04/2021 14:52

It is nonsense because where I live it is the other way round.

Vet did cat's annual check-up last week but the dentist won't see me as it isn't "an emergency" even though I can only eat on one side of my mouth.

Last time I called they said that another local practice is accepting new private patients.

Only problem is I lost my job and despite major efforts can't get new one so I can't afford to go private.

I try to ignore as many of the more ludicrous rules as possible. Never stuck to one hour a day’s exercise - wtf now, the virus can only get you when you’ve been outside your house more than 60 mins? It can tell the time? If it’s that smart, then vaccines sure as hell won’t do anything for us!

One of my workplaces is preparing to go back to in person work, they tried to tell us that even though we’ve all had two jabs and will be taking flow tests every shift, and don’t wear masks when we’re in with patients (it’s a mental health setting) we still had to wear them to go to the (staff only!) loos. Because obviously, the rona is smart enough to lurk in the bogs just waiting for someone to take an unmasked dump. People be losing their damn minds and ability to use logic and reason over this. I’m so done with it all Confused

XenoBitch · 22/04/2021 21:37

Went to Costa today and they have Track & Trace QR code details on the tables... which are outside in the open air, that anyone can sit at. Makes no sense to me.

That under 5s count against the six talley in England but not other countries. Angry

@YorkiePanda You are my kind of poster. I TOTALLY agree. Ludicrous.

Surely nobody still believes that one hour's exercise a day was actually a rule? It was never a thing. Ever.
YorkiePanda · 24/04/2021 12:58

There’s been so much confusion between what’s an actual “rule” or law and what’s guidance. Part of the problem.

DuesToTheDirt · 24/04/2021 13:14

I’m in Cornwall this week, there are people on holiday here from other countries, we were chatting to an American couple who are over here on holiday, and 2 Dutch people were here for a short break as we overheard them in the que in a shop.

Wow, that's shocking. We've not been able to see family for a long time as they are in England and we are in Scotland, and yet people are travelling to England from abroad for holidays. Angry

LovingBob · 24/04/2021 13:17

The hour of exercise was something that Gove said in an interview with the BBC, it was just his opinion and never written in any rules, guidance or anything but people heard it and repeated it like it was, especially on here.
