Rules that make no sense

My DH is seeing friends at the pub this weekend, outside and there will be 6 of them. All within the rules, yes. Except what about social distancing. They will be sat at a picnic bench, 6 grown men.

I get that pubs need to open but the rule in gardens is 6 or 2 households which we do but we are sitting very far apart from people not in our household. At pubs, they are sat very close.

I have and do follow all the rules because I believe that's what I have to do but there are some really strange ones. What other rules do you wish you could ask the scientists what their reasoning is for allowing it, not allowing it?

No, that’s correct, it was quite clear in the Scottish athletics rules that we operate under!

That's bonkers surely they at least have the boundary + 5mile thing?

Porcupineintherough · 20/04/2021 20:18

@TheVampiresWife that's down to your dentist, it's not the law. My dentist started routine appointments again last July.

whatmattersisthatyoulove · 20/04/2021 20:19

As an infant school teacher: no sharing of pencils, washing PE equipment, all staff on playground duties because so many different bubbles, no sharing equipment/ resources with other classes without 48 hour quarantine, washing tables each break time, not able to speak to parents before or after school they have to email, no reading books to go home, no school assembly, done in class via zoom, not able to mix with any teachers in a different year group because of bubbles. Then at the weekend I see the local park...

The OP asked about nonsensical rules, not laws, and that's my dentist's rule. Emergency treatment only, Because Covid.

I haven't been to the dentist since May 2019 - for routine dentistry, anyway. I have however had to have two teeth extracted as emergencies which would have been filled ordinarily, but couldn't be, Because Covid.

The Rulz have been made up from the start. 2m distance? No masks --> masks? Free entry for all in supermarkets while other shops remain closed? Bubbles, rule of 6? None of these things are as 'data driven' as they would like us to believe.

This is ultimate home goal though because when they make things up, one day they will get called out. And we'll not believe a word of whatever else they want us to do. Don't be surprised when there is mass non-compliance for the next jab/pill/passport.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/04/2021 21:32

Not being able to use school bags, so you end up dropping bottles/ reading records/ books/ bumped-head notes in puddles.

Masks on a windswept school playground.

I’m in Cornwall this week, there are people on holiday here from other countries, we were chatting to an American couple who are over here on holiday, and 2 Dutch people were here for a short break as we overheard them in the que in a shop. Why the heck are people here on holiday yet it’s illegal for me to leave this country or even have a cup of tea inside a friends house?! And before anyone starts there is no way people are coming over for holidays and isolating for 10 days as that would make it a very long and expensive trip from the states!

Other rules that are stupid, under 5s didn’t count in gathering numbers in England on the 28th of March but they did from the 29th onwards meaning my 8 month old officially counts towards the rule of 6 but won’t when we go over to Wales in a few weeks to see family.

Why can I run next to people in the gym on treadmills 2m apart but I can’t sit on a mat from people 2 meters apart in a yoga class?

Why can I walk into Starbucks and order my coffee at the counter then take it to the outside table but in a pub I have to order at the table?

There are so many more but I would be here all night writing them out.

AlphaVTango · 20/04/2021 21:40

Went to Legoland last week. In the toilets all the cubicles were able to be used, so 10-12 toilets in use, but every other sink and hand dryer were out of use to allow people to socially distance. Which meant meant 10-12 people were using the toilet then only having 4 sinks and 2 dryers to use. So more people waiting around 🤷‍♀️

My favourite so far was before Christmas kids could bring games into play for the last day of school but they had to bring them in three days before to quarantine them.

When ds came home from school I asked what he had played and he said”Twister”! 😂😂
Just love the fact they were allowed to play twister but had to quarantine the game. It’s still making me laugh now

Porcupineintherough · 20/04/2021 21:53

Did you think they should have been delivered to Moses on tablets of clay?

Of course they were made up. Of course they've changed. A novel virus, limited scientific data, frantic research efforts, the variability of the human immune system, problems with testing, social and political considerations and good sprinkling of incompetency... honest, how could it be any different?

Robin45 · 20/04/2021 22:12

I think a lot of the rules are about behavioural control, specifically to make people feel “safe” going about and doing normal activities again. Psychologically a lot of people probably feel as though covid can’t get them if they follow the “rules”. Sitting in a pub garden in a group of six close together isn’t any “safer” than sitting in a group of 10 or 15 or 20, but people feel like it is because it’s one of the “rules”.

ChocOrange1 · 20/04/2021 22:18

Kids fun swim at the leisure centre. Individual changing cubicles closed, individual toilet cubicles open. So obviously everyone was getting changed in the toilet cubicles or on the side of the pool.

Had to wear a mask to walk through an outdoor seating area to get to a play area. No mask required in the footpath leading up to the seating area, or in the play area on the other side.

Oh yes its definitely that. Also so that they have a risk assessment so if someone questions it they can say "oh yes we put in a one way system" or whatever. Even though it does nothing.
ChocOrange1 · 20/04/2021 22:22

@Lockdownbear

Scotland You can go get your hair and nails done but you can't get a kids feet measured or order a takeaway inside!

Something tells me might be something to do with NS wanting her hair done.

The shoe measuring thing has really annoyed me this time round. In what world are shoes (especially for children) non essential?
XenoBitch · 20/04/2021 22:22

Most of the rules have been bonkers in my eyes.. but one that stood out was the one way system around supermarkets. I am not sure what the justification for that was at all. My local Tesco had you walking the entire length of the store, to start your shopping in the alcohol aisle. I am sure that was fab for recovering alcoholics.

RedcurrantPuff · 20/04/2021 22:24

Not being able to leave your Council Area in Scotland, irrespective of size of that area, or how close you live to a boundary.

Yes this, especially in the densely populated west of Scotland where the council areas are all very close together. I just ignored it. As if I wasn’t going to go and see my parents 20 mins drive away

Oh that reminds me of the closing the non essential aisles in wales . Totally stupid
ChocOrange1 · 20/04/2021 22:30

Oh in the library they closed 2 of the 3
Self service checkout machines - which are spread out around the building, not close to each other. So everyone had to touch the same one and there were loads of people hanging around waiting to use it.
They also restricted their opening hours, so the same number of people had to visit during a shorter time and therefore more people there at any one time.

If it was actually about infection control they would extend their opening hours as much as possible and open more checkouts.

XenoBitch · 20/04/2021 22:33

Wasn't that to do with making it more fair to the non essential shops that were forced to close?
So basically, nothing to do with the virus. Bonkers.

RedcurrantPuff · 20/04/2021 22:34

Socially distancing beds in hospital was also stupid. So at a time when capacity was at its most stretched ever - let’s cut the number of beds! Not that it was even effective given the number of cases that were caused in hospitals

Yes, but not massively fair to people who needed clothing or a household appliance urgently. Better they can’t get to buy some pants or a kettle at all eh instead of getting some from Tesco!

Madness

MercyBooth · 20/04/2021 22:57

Our Tesco blocked off the upstairs during the November lockdown. Where homewares shoes clothes and books are. Ridiculous.

MercyBooth · 20/04/2021 22:59

Im in North Essex Not Wales Just to clarify.

Torschlusspanik · 20/04/2021 23:04

I share a department office with my colleague (work in a school). We can't always follow the metre rule. My colleague's partner works at the school, as does mine. Yet as a four we may not socialise in my living room, which is bigger than our office.

Lack of quarantine rules.

My gym can't run indoor classes, in a massive sports hall, with a maximum of 15 people.
