So who has already been on a ‘staycation’ and how was it?

We have and it’s been amazing. Left home on Monday, English seaside village, the sun has shone, the kids have enjoyed some sea air and we’ve supported local businesses down here. People still being sensible mostly with mask wearing and it hasn’t been crazily busy. We debated and debated coming, but are so glad we did. Anyone else?

That’s not a staycation
That’s a holiday
A staycation is when you stay at home

Timeforabiscuit · 16/04/2021 19:32

Staycation is a series of old school day trips, possibly including extra takeaways.

You went on a short break or on holiday if you stay elsewhere overnight.

Yup
Angelica789 · 16/04/2021 19:38

Well unfortunately for the pedants the word now has 2 meanings. Time off work spent at home AND a UK holiday. Language changes fast and you gotta roll with it.

Gumandbass · 16/04/2021 19:41

I just had a week off. Lots of drinking wine & reading in the garden, late night TV, sleeping in & take aways. That's my idea of a staycation

Downriver · 16/04/2021 19:44

You ain't gotta roll with it. It is confusing if staycation becomes what most people regard as a regular average holiday, i.e. staying in your own country. Gawd! Staycation, staying put, treating home like a place for a holiday. Got it!?

SunnyLovesCassie · 16/04/2021 19:47

Yes a staycation is when you stay home and do day trips. Anything else is a holiday. I live abroad and could be in 4 different countries within 1.5 hours. If I drove and came home after, that would be a staycation. If I stayed over for several days, that would be a holiday.

WeeFae · 16/04/2021 19:51

You didn't have a staycation.

gophergordon · 16/04/2021 19:54

Surely you had a UK holiday not a staycation

Lovestonap · 16/04/2021 20:04

Pedantry notwithstanding, we are just coming to the end of a lovely UK break. Beautiful weather, lovely food. Really really needed it!!!

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 16/04/2021 20:11

Sorry. UK holiday!

You don't go on a staycation, the clue is right there in the name.

Were you unaware that millions of people holidayed in the UK pre covid?

thatgingergirl · 16/04/2021 20:12

I'm glad you had a lovely time Op - it
sound like you had a fun and relaxing time but I too, class that as a holiday. I have booked 4 nights on the Norfolk coast in September - really looking forward to it.
In my childhood, a staycation meant my mum telling me we were going to Stopatom, or Windowsill Bay 😄

Butterflyfluff · 16/04/2021 20:16

A staycation is both a holiday in your own country or a series of trips from home

TulipSandwiches · 16/04/2021 20:17

Yes, have often holidayed within my own country. 🙄

Peakypolly · 16/04/2021 20:18

I am so impressed at the ingenuity of the hospitality industry in the English Lake District. Not only is the weather sunny, the opportunity to enjoy wonderful food served outside in stunning surroundings has really enhanced a relaxing UK holiday.

Whatalottachocca · 16/04/2021 20:38

I’m on a U.K. holiday at the moment and am having a wonderful time. Had fish & chips on the beach today, have walked along three different beaches, been into some little independent shops and spent some money, had an ice cream and a hot chocolate. I’m here until the weekend and it’s fabulous. 😄

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 16/04/2021 20:39

To be clear, we have always holidayed in the UK, and we love it. We almost never go abroad and have had our main holiday in the UK for the last 10 years. It was my mistake to say ‘staycation’ when I meant UK holiday, but I have heard the term used to describe a UK holiday, but it seems it isn’t usual to do so.

The point of my OP was really to ask how, if you’ve been on holiday in the UK this week, how it’s been...

2 nights in a glamping pod with hot fun, BBQ and fire pit, went to sea side for fish and chips and ice cream. We enjoyed it but with food and spending money cost over £400 which I feel is expensive compared to 2 weeks all inclusive in Tenerife where we originally booked.

Monkeytapper · 16/04/2021 20:43

Hot tub, not hot fun!

ChocOrange1 · 16/04/2021 20:46

We are leaving for our UK holiday in Swanage on Monday. Staying in a static caravan, which I know some people will think is crap but we like it and its only costing us £150 for 4 night for the four f us. I'm most excited about going swimming on the caravan site because my youngest has never been!

sleepwouldbenice · 16/04/2021 21:11

Jesus people arguing over your description how pathetic Hmm
Really pleased for you OP. We booked the week before but of course coudnt go. By looking forward to our break / staycation over the may bank holiday
We all deserve a break after the year so far

Cailleach1 · 16/04/2021 21:21

Yonks ago, I had a staycation in my own house. Only went out for food etc. The weather was unseasonably warm, so I spent quite a bit of of my time, reading on a chaise longue in the garden. It was before widespread use of the internet and smart phones.

The cherry blossoms were in full flower and the petals were scattered on the ground. Our persian boy would walk through the blossoms and they would stick to his fur. I have a memory of how beautiful he looked, speckled with blossoms, to this day.

Cailleach1 · 16/04/2021 21:23

This was before children, so only had to please myself. Probably not much help.
