Has anyone caught covid after having a vaccination?

I've been shielding, hardly left the house. Although have kids who've been out to the park in the last couple of weeks. Had my first vaccination 6 weeks ago.

I now have covid symptoms - cough, no taste/smell (although I also have a cold so it mag be that), resting heart rate is 10bpm more than it usually is, etc.

I'm going to get a test, but wondered how common this is? I've been feeling awful for 3-4 days now (initially thought it was a bad cold) & not getting better, which is why I'm now querying covid.

I can't say how common it is, OP, but it is definitely possible. The vaccine should reduce the severity of the disease, though.

Good luck with the test, and hope you feel better soon.

greyinganddecaying · 12/04/2021 17:32

Thanks, I hope so! I have a few pre-existing conditions that make me CEV, so this isn't ideal.

Test booked for tomorrow so at least I know either way.

My friend has. She says she is very tired but other than that, no real symptoms.

Cookerhood · 12/04/2021 17:35

You are only partially protected after your first vaccine, so perfectly possible but hopefully won't be too I'll.

oneglassandpuzzled · 12/04/2021 17:36

An elderly neighbour of my mother's was hospitalised a week after her vaccination. She must have caught Covid around the time of the jab, perhaps a day or so before. She was a very fit 85-year-old and 16 weeks on still needs occasional oxygen. Very bad luck.

badpuma · 12/04/2021 17:42

My mum did. After the vaccine she started doing some medical and dental appointments which had been put off, and had a positive covid test. On the plus side, she'd been CEV and had a slight cough, no other symptoms at all.

ChunkyMonkey2020 · 12/04/2021 17:43

My friend did. She had the phizer back in January and got covid early March.

She was fine. She lost her sense of smell and taste but that was about it.

PrettyCherryBlossom · 12/04/2021 17:46

My dad tested positive less than a week after his second jab. He described it as a bad cold, he was definitely poorly but at least the vaccine has prevented a more serious case.

Aurorie11 · 12/04/2021 17:50

My DH 18 days after 1st vaccine, but we think it’s reduced symptoms.
We are self isolating, hoping I don’t get it as due my 2nd in less than 3 weeks and can’t have it if I do

MrsHastingslikethebattle · 12/04/2021 19:50

A friend of mine, her parents both had Covid, about 4 months apart.
Her dad didn't have the vaccine as was bad for around 5 weeks.
Her mum who had the vaccine was bad for around 6 days.

Vaccines arent a cure, they're a preventive. You can get Covid and symptoms but they stop hospitalization and deaths.

Athinginitself · 12/04/2021 19:55

DP and most of his department (hospital) all post 1st vaccine, mostly v mild although dp and someone else in bed for a week and quite poorly noone hospitalised.

fairgame84 · 12/04/2021 20:00

Me 🙋‍♀️
Had 1st pfizer vaccine 4th feb and tested positive 22nd march.
It was just like a cold, just runny nose, temp and sinus pain. On day 3 I felt awful, just tired and rough but after that I was fine.
Nobody else in the house caught it off me.

starfish4 · 12/04/2021 20:21

Any chance it could be hayfever OP? I tend to get it around June, been feeling a bit iffy for a week or two, but due it's hayfever after spending four hours out in the garden and having an awful night.

starfish4 · 12/04/2021 20:22

think not due

islockdownoveryet · 12/04/2021 20:27

Yes me and dh , like others it’s like a cold but I lost my sense of smell and had a cough .
Definitely get a test but there are other colds going about .

Mrsorganmorgan · 12/04/2021 20:55

My daughter caught Covid after her first vaccination. She caught it off a patient (she's a nurse).

It was very mild and lasted only a few days.

greyinganddecaying · 12/04/2021 21:13

Thanks all - it might just be a cold 🤞
I don't tend to suffer from hay fever, so unlikely to be that - I guess I'll find out soon

My friend's mum caught COVID soon after her second jab, had mild flu like symptoms for a couple of days then was okay - she's a nurse so regular exposure.

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 12/04/2021 21:31

I had the vaccine pfizer on the Monday and they think I caught covid on the Wednesday so came out with symptoms in the Saturday which I thought were to do with the vaccine

My friend has cancer and had two doses of the vaccine before catching covid this month. He is not too unwell with it at all. Same for his parents. I hope this is reassuring to you

cookingmygoose · 15/04/2021 22:49

What was the test outcome OP?

MotherBuckets · 15/04/2021 22:55

Both DH and I have caught it 3-4 weeks after our first jabs. DS brought it home from school and passed it to us. Thought it was just a cold tbh but did a LFT and it was positive 😬 and confirmed by PCR. Dont feel too bad so far though...

PuzzledObserver · 15/04/2021 23:12

Recent data from the Covid symptom tracker app - people with symptomatic Covid infection:

Overall - 1 in 1,900

No jabs - 1 in 1,100
1 jab - 1 in 5,100
2 jabs - 1 in 15,000

So yes, it’s possible, but probability greatly reduced.

SheeshazAZ09 · 15/04/2021 23:20

Yes in several care homes where residents tested negative over weeks or months, they were all vaccinated, then outbreaks of covid occurred and some tested positive.
