Explain the point of vaccine to me!

Ok, so title is a bit goady but hear me out! I had covid last year. Ill but not too bad. This week ive had vaccine and im worse than with covid.
So.....
If vaccinated i can still transmit to others therefore not protect others.
If vaccinated i am protecting myself from covid. True but given i had it the risk of having again is low. If i did get it again then surely id get it milder having had it previously.
So... What was/is the point? Suppose I'm writing this as I'm feeling sorry for myself as i feel so rubbish post vaccine!

I had it twice, once was a cold, the second time not even that - i just felt a bit under the weather and it was only picked up because I was tested as part of an outbreak at my work.

ChequerBoard · 12/04/2021 16:36

@Wildswim

If you've had Covid there's not much point in being vaccinated in my opinion. People who had SARS were still immune 17 years later. It mutates, but not enough for your body to not recognise it and fight it off.

Great that you 'know' this and can share your wisdom with us all - it will save the millions of pounds that is currently being spent on actual scientific studies to work this out, you know properly.

FFS 🤦‍♀️

Are there any studies on it?

It may be the case but you’d need to look at more

Dowser · 12/04/2021 16:40

Hope you feel better soon op 👍

Neonprint · 12/04/2021 16:44

Ok you don't know the risk is lower or you'd get idlt more mildly. So there's that.

It is very new as a vaccine and transmission from vaccinated people was more challenging to study in the trial. So there wasn't lots of evidence to show it could reduce transmission. Rather than it not having an impact.

As we vaccinate the population it's becoming evident that transmission is reduced by people having the vaccine. Soo there's that too.

SavageHenry · 12/04/2021 16:44

People who’ve had covid often have stronger side affects after vaccination as their body is able to mount a stronger immune response compared with those who have never been infected.

Stronger immune response usually means stronger immunity, if that’s any consolation

Feel better soon!

Terracotta9 · 12/04/2021 17:00

*Are there any studies on it?

It may be the case but you’d need to look at more*

Why?

I already have a good idea of how my body handles Covid. First it was a cold, and not even a bad one, and second time around my immune system booted it out before it even turned into a proper illness.

I don’t need to look at studies to know that I am unlikely to face complications/death from covid.

Frankly, this subtle insistence that we must all be deathly afraid of covid even if we’ve already had it strikes me as a weird kind of scaremongering.

We no you are misunderstanding

I’m not talking about you I’m talking about in a population level.

It dies the matter what happened to you for op to know what is likely.

Bloody hell some people are quick off the mark with this shite

MarshaBradyo · 12/04/2021 17:04

Er and doesn’t

Honestly bold type and everything. What a wank.

@KeepSmiling89 variants differ by up to 0.3% even "Government scientists" have now confirmed they are not "worried" about variants.

If you listen to some of the sage/independent sage members on the news you would indeed think what's the point with some of the predictions.

I have had it and hope it keeps hospitalisations down.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/04/2021 18:00

Stage 4 of the trials?

Do you actually know what that means?

Stage 4 - national rollout of the vaccine after all clinical trials have been completed and the vaccine has been certified for use.

Data is collected for a few years to ensure depth and complexity of analysis, allowing changes, modifications to the vaccine or roll out strategy to increase both efficacy and efficiency.

Stage 5 (if you want to take it further) Data is continually analyses over the life of a vaccine. For depth and complexity of data analysis, etc

It's not as simple as "Of course it's still in trial stage"

Cornettoninja · 12/04/2021 18:03

“We do know that NHS has reported "A&E being swamped with side effects from vax" but that doesn't really tell us if they've caught Covid or if it's an immune response”

... or whether it’s the effect of intense irresponsiblelreporting. I’m sure there are plenty of psychological researchers watching that one too.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 12/04/2021 18:10

A&E being swamped is probably because a persistent headache in the days following the vaccine might be a) common but benign side effect of the vaccine b) just one of those things that happens anyway quite frequently c) a sign of a very rare but very serious and possibly fatal vaccine reaction.

We’re in the unfortunate position of having thousands of people experiencing symptoms who are almost certainly absolutely fine, but who we can’t guarantee are fine without a trip to A&E and a blood test or even a brain scan.

Surely you could have asked the person vaccinating you what the point was. Or did you just sit there like a mute sheep.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 12/04/2021 18:17

@JeanGabin

I found this thread useful - essentially it's about herd immunity and reaching the threshold required to reduce the r rate to below 1. In other countries, like the USA where vaccine programmes were started later but now ahead of us they are seeing growth in covid. In the uk we are doing better because other methods of limiting spread are still being used.
Yes - in the US 36% of the population are vaccinated, mostly healthcare workers, the elderly, and the clinically vulnerable. The spread of Covid is now mostly among under-30s, most of whom are not yet vaccinated.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the UK now that lockdown is being lifted, especially given that the pace of vaccines seems to be slowing.

There’s high likelihood that reporting over blood clots is part of this.

You can see it on here even.

Remmy123 · 12/04/2021 20:53

There is not enough concrete evidence to say for sure it stops transmission - that wont be seen accurately for some time.

OP I don't know either - I totally appreciate what you are asking because I am baffled by it too!

MarshaBradyo · 12/04/2021 20:55

How can people be baffled?

What about Israel, the numbers look good don’t they?

gingganggooleywotsit · 12/04/2021 20:55

Come on op, use your head and do some research

elaboratethen · 12/04/2021 21:44

We do know that NHS has reported "A&E being swamped with side effects from vax"

Is this true? This is the first I've heard of it. Do you have any sources?

StarCat2020 · 12/04/2021 22:00

Usually when you make a scientific point and declare it to be fact you are supposed to provide a reputable reference as evidence otherwise it is just words.
