Should I be worried about my Dad?

He had the Astrazeneca vaccine three weeks today and was very pleased to have it. He had a slight headache after it and said he felt extra thirsty, but that was all. For the last week he's felt unwell and says in the last few days he's really declined with shivering, all over body aches and pains, feeling sick etc.

He's not the type to ever go to the doctor and is almost never ill so I can't help being a bit worried. He's said if he doesn't improve by Monday he'll book Monday off and see a doctor. He's been wanting the vaccine since forever and now is actually saying he wishes he hadn't had it. Sad

This is not to put anyone off the vaccine, but it's just out-of-character for him. For context, he's early 50s, has sleep apenea and uses testoreone gel, but no obvious underlying health issues.

I can't observe what he's like as I live 3 hours away. Hopefully it's nothing, but are side-effects several weeks after the vaccine normal or something to be concerned about?

I would call 111 and get advice

Vickles20 · 10/04/2021 23:05

Yeah they are sadly up until 4 weeks. I was hoping 2 weeks. But it’s 4 days to 4 weeks. This is a snapshot from nhs uk:/

I’m 2 weeks in
Headaches. Nausea. Tired and peaky. Feel wiped out and that glands are up in my neck. I’m
Staying well hydrated. Paracetamol is helping. So I’m not worried. Just alert and aware if that makes sense.
I’m 45

Is there someone with him? Can they keep an eye on him? I think I'd probably ring one of the emergency numbers you have there and get some advice.

tenlittlecygnets · 10/04/2021 23:09

Have you googled? I'd say that symptoms after three weeks are unusual and should be checked out. I'd ring 111, seek their advice.

Purplewithred · 10/04/2021 23:12

It could be nothing to do with the jab - could be an infection for example. Does he have any other symptoms? A temperature?

Tealightsandd · 10/04/2021 23:13

My first thought is he needs to get a covid test. Call 119 to arrange the test (and also 111 if you think he needs urgent medical attention). I hope he's ok.

Yes, thankfully my mum and brother live with him, so can keep an eye on him. I've advised him to call - and if he won't, I'll do so myself. It's hopefully nothing, but just a tad concerning given the timing.

You've described covid symptoms. It's very possible he caught it just before, during, or after his vaccine appointment. He needs to get a test.

UmbilicusProfundus · 10/04/2021 23:38

I really don’t think this would be a vaccine side effect three weeks later. The 28 day period is specifically around the ultra rare clotting issue. Agree with others about getting a covid test

HSHorror · 10/04/2021 23:44

I agree he needs a test.
Shivering is a reaction to covid or the jab. But most people seem to get it quickly.
I had chills within around 12h.
I would think the vax info would mean only ignore temps which are within a day maybe 2 of the jab.

QuestionEverythingOrBeASheep · 11/04/2021 00:11

If this was his first jab and not his second I would definitely call the Dr and get a test. The worst time to catch it is after the first jab as it can cause problems. A test will help determine if he possibly has it.

Torvean · 11/04/2021 01:02

Ppl shiver if they have a high temperature. Its not a Covid symptom alone.
The headache doesn't sound worrying either.

Just monitor him. Give him paracetamol ( if allowed) if his temperature is high. Make sure he is eating and drinking enough.

Sounds like effects others have had
Could have picked up a virus non covid)

Just monitor and give some TLC

sherrystrull · 11/04/2021 01:05

It sounds like covid. I agree he could have contracted it before immunity set it. Your mum and brother need to isolate and he needs a covid test.

I hope he feels better soon.

Mindymomo · 11/04/2021 06:51

I don’t think a doctor will see him without having a covid test first so he needs one first to rule out covid.

MRex · 11/04/2021 07:05

Sounds like he caught covid about a week after his vaccine. There isn't much by way of immunity after just a week, but it should help him a little bit. It seems really strange that he's been ill for a week and hasn't gone for a test, why did he not go? Are at least your mum and brother isolating properly?

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/04/2021 07:09

His symtoms are of a virus - Covid or something else entirely - not of a blood clotting disorder. Get him to do a Covid test, and treat with paracetamol, plenty of liquids and rest. Ring his GP if he doesn't respond to those things.

Proof of this, please?
springisintheair2021 · 11/04/2021 09:53

He's got symptoms of Covid and should be self isolating. I had Covid in January, I have never felt so unwell in my life. Please encourage him to stay indoors from now until a test.
In my area we can get tests the same day at a walk in centre with symptoms ( have to be booked online)

I'm questioning your evidence for this as I'm not a sheep.
Vickles20 · 11/04/2021 10:56

Nhs online currently saying symptoms can be 4 days to 4 weeks after AZ first vaccine. Below is a screenshot I took two days ago from their main website

Should I be worried about my Dad?
Vickles20 · 11/04/2021 10:58

I did a LF test two days ago when I felt the most rotten. Negative. So it’s either vaccine after effects or just a virus. I’m just calmly seeing how it pans out. Keeping well hydrated and walking each day.

Vickles20 · 11/04/2021 10:59

OP. Could he get to have a test maybe? Just to cancel it out?

bookworm1632 · 11/04/2021 12:16

The reason the blood clot thing is 28 days is because it is an autoimmune response. That's NOT what the OP is describing which is a general fever.

So after 3 weeks, it doesn't sound like a vaccine side effect - my guess would be covid - a PCR will confirm.

Note vaccines DO NOT STOP someone getting covid. They usually mean they recover before symptoms show and nearly always before the illness becomes severe. Symptomatic covid 3 weeks after a jab though is really NOT unusual.

ceilingsand · 11/04/2021 12:30

Sounds like covid.
