Why has my 18 year old son had his Covid jab?

He is back at uni and told me yesterday that he has had his jab! He got sent an appt by text so went along.
How? Why? Could it be because he is registered with a GP at uni for his very mild asthma? He is perfectly fit and healthy.
He didn't think to ask why he had been offered it! Do you know anyone of the same age and healthy who has had their jab?

Does it matter? He’s had the jab, one person closer.

At my work we have an agreement with the nearest vacc clinic. If there are any left over at the end of the day they give us a call and we send people over.

Maybe the uni has something similar?

Why do people question it? Just be glad he’s had it.

My 19 year old DS has had the vaccine.
Think he's eligible for both asthma and coeliac.
Asthma is well controlled, but he's on the list to get annual flu jag.

merryhouse · 10/04/2021 10:17

It's probably the asthma. My husband had an issue years ago that meant he got prescribed an inhaler at one point, and we think that's why he got contacted by the GP.

(Only a couple of weeks before me, as it happened - we're early 50s)

Mamamamasaurus · 10/04/2021 10:20

Surely you'd just be happy that he's had it?

Coeliac disease is one of the conditions that puts you into a higher priority for the vaccine. It's because some coeliacs also have reduced spleen function, which can affect the immune system.
Spudbyanyothername · 10/04/2021 10:22

If he needs regular medication to control his asthma, it will be his asthma

MNChkn · 10/04/2021 10:24

University students are very prone to infections of all kinds. They live and work in very close proximity. Then they carry the infection all over the country in their vacations. It makes sense to vaccinate them fast and in fact I’m wondering why it wasn’t done as a higher priority earlier, as all the East Asian data showed people in this age group were asymptotic super spreaders.

FlyingBurrito · 10/04/2021 10:26

I thought the why have I been invited for a jab threads had died a death, clearly not Grin

Does it matter? It's another person closer to the end, there's no shortage of slots.

Blueskythinking123 · 10/04/2021 10:29

Would be asthma in his record. Also, uni doctors probably don't have may older people registered so get to younger people first.

My 18 year old asthmatic DD also had the jab, but we also living with someone who was shielding.

MsAwesomeDragon · 10/04/2021 10:31

My 21yo dd had her jab on Wednesday. She didn't question it, but I assume it's because of her MH problems, or possibly her BMI (caused by MH problems and possibly some undiagnosed physical health problems)

Pinotwoman82 · 10/04/2021 10:33

I’m pleased one more person closer, and I’m glad younger people are still going for it considering the news

What the heck is wrong with asking questions? The OP isn’t criticising She’s asking a valid question.
Or do you never ask questions?
MysteriousAffairAtStyles · 10/04/2021 10:35

@Mamamamasaurus

I’m sure the OP is delighted that he’s had it.

She can be both delighted that he’s had it, and also curious as to why he’s had it, at the very same time. Such is the wondrous complexity of the human brain.

From what detail did you extrapolate that ‘Why has my son had his vaccination?’ equates to ‘I am not happy that my son has had his vaccination’?

idontlikealdi · 10/04/2021 10:36

What are you worried about?

Lassy1945 · 10/04/2021 10:38

The Op didn’t say she want happy!!

She asked a question.

Lassy1945 · 10/04/2021 10:38

wasn’t

rainbowthoughts · 10/04/2021 10:39

Mine has as well. 18. No health issues. Not at uni, living at home and still registered with school, albeit dropped out at the tail end of last year! He is autistic, but that's not a factor.

He got the letter so went for the vaccine.

Theforest · 10/04/2021 10:40

A friends daughter who is 16 and has asthma had Pfizer about a month ago.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 10/04/2021 10:42

Different country, but DS has is invitation, I wondered why, too.
I think it would unneccessarily slow down the process, if for ex. asthmatics were sorted for severe, more severe and less severe cases.

NRCS · 10/04/2021 10:43

My 16y old got invited as lives in house with group 4/shielding due to medical condition. His mate same age also got it as has asthma with regular steroids

MNChkn · 10/04/2021 10:45

@MysteriousAffairAtStyles Brilliant username, brilliant post 😂.

I agree the university GP probably doesn’t have many older patients to get through first. The best GP I ever had was my uni GP. She could spend half an hour on a consultation because she only ever had a couple of patients attending each student clinic.

Mrsjayy · 10/04/2021 10:45

Isn't a good thing that young people are starting to be vaccinated although he really should have asked.

rainbowthoughts · 10/04/2021 10:57

Mine didn't ask. It's not up to him to police this. If you get an invite, you go.

DIshedUp · 10/04/2021 10:58

Maybe he has a health condition he hasn't told you about?

Could be the asthma, could be a mistake, does really matter

peak2021 · 10/04/2021 11:00

In his shoes I would have accepted it and asked not the reason why. It may be his mild asthma.

All I would suggest is that he does not brag about it and perhaps not even tell anyone else.
